The ADNA Presents is an essential #podcast if you're interested #AudioDescription.

In Episode 129, Roy Samuelson chats with Hannah Waymouth, and it's a *great* episode. Hannah discusses her gradual acclimatisation to AD; the amount and type of description; being ahead of the story; and wishing for what she terms "Audio Description Previews" (such as audio introductions).

Definitely worth a listen. Some great insights.

Prefixes and Suffixes Do Not Belong in Interface Names

> Using the I prefix or Interface suffix for interfaces, as well as Abstract for abstract classes, is an anti-pattern.

Have you wondered if there is a term for how mediocre artsy stuff is presented as something super profound and special in art galleries for rich people to make it sound very valuable?

Turns out there is, it's called "ArtSpeak / International Art English" theguardian.com/artanddesign/2…

Becoming increasingly annoyed by Linux software updates being blocked in their own local maximum.

An Ubuntu software upgrade broke because of power cut (believe it or not, those happen); it rendered the distro un-upgradable. It failed with a message telling the GUI user to run "dpkg --configure -a". It knew what was needed, but did not even try to repair the distro.

I have some Debian servers to upgrade, and I'm now reading through debian.org/releases/bookworm/a… and it's even more involved than Ubuntu's do-release-upgrade.

My personal Fedora machine does major updates well every 6 months (and weekly for regular ones); and it's been pretty reliable, but only because it's battery-backed and I make sure it does not stop in the middle of an update.

It's time for A/B updates to be generalized. They are mature, and have proven they work in Chrome, Android, and countless embedded systems that work more reliably than desktop machines.

I don't know what shape it should take. Will it be @pid_eins 's image-based proposal 0pointer.net/blog/fitting-ever… ? Btrfs-based cow updates (snapper) ? Silverblue ? NixOS ?

But I know there is no serious path to Linux on everyone else's desktop without it.

Twenty-five years ago today, on Monday, December 28, 1998, my sister Karolann gave me a bird clock. This is an analog wall clock that plays bird songs every hour. It's been sitting on my wall for the last twenty-five years, and is, to my knowledge, the oldest Christmas present I'm still actively using. Although it still works, I can tell its days are numbered. In particular, time has not been kind to the button you use to adjust what bird song plays, as it's really hard to make it actually work.
Several years ago I recorded all twelve bird songs using an electromagnetic pickup coil, which for those who don't know, lets you record audio almost as good as if the device had an audio output jack. I've never been able to find another clock with the same bird sounds on it. So have this recording for your enjoyment.
Bird songs: Great Horned Owl at 12:00, Northern Mockingbird, Black-Capped Chickadee, Northern Cardinal, Downy Woodpecker, Canada Goose, House Wren, American Robin, Song Sparrow, Belted Kingfisher, Tufted Titmouse & Baltimore Oriole.
