I really like the semantics of Rust's Option<T> and Result<T>, and I wish more programming languages would adopt something like it.

you probably mean `Option`. `Optional` is the zvariant workaround for inability to use `Option` with D-Bus 😊

US folks: If you've not voted early, and don't yet have plans to vote, please make plans over the weekend! If early voting is still available in your area, take some time out of your day and get it done.

For those who have already voted via mail or in-person early voting, here are resources to check the status of your ballot: vote.org/ballot-tracker-tools/

Why people would want to deprive themselves of their natural desires, I do not know, especially just because the month of November passes. It's unhealthy to starve yourself of the natural ways of life.

I dream of someday giving a conference talk titled "A Majestic Minilith", drawing its title from DHH's "majestic monolith" (signalvnoise.com/svn3/the-maje…) plus the Minilith from Arthur C. Clarke's _2061_. In this talk, I would show a full-stack web app written in Rust (or maybe some other AOT-compiled language), where the whole thing is a single binary, and show via live demo with audience participation that it can handle a decent number of concurrent users on a low-power home router.

Hi, humans.

If you like me (and we like, at least sometimes talk) and would be interested in joining a potential discord server I create, feel free to give me a shout.

Can't promise anything, as these thing usually go, but I'd like to have people I like around and stuff.

in reply to Sean Randall

@cachondo @menelion Believe me this isn't coming from anyone fanatical. I hated it until a week ago when I had cause to want to use it, and have just realised it's not thaaaaat bad. I get the hate though, I was there too.
in reply to Estelle

@cachondo @menelion Discord really starts to shine when you have people that are on the server while moving about. Their noise cancelation is beyond amazing, meaning that you can e.g. do stuff in the kitchen, speak when you have something to say, and not be annoying when you don't. It also handles network conditions, like when getting into an elevator for example, a lot better than tt.

With that said, I think it needs a lot more shepherding from admins, as each new member needs to actually be invited, you can't just give credentials to people you trust.

in reply to MikoΕ‚aj HoΕ‚ysz

@miki @cachondo All that is true, but accessibility… I installed it ereyesterday once more, and I'm still struggling.
in reply to AndrΓ© Polykanine

@menelion @miki @cachondo What are you struggling with? I'm not at all trying to minimize it, believe me. I just want to understand where other people might find it difficult. I still have problems too.
in reply to Estelle

@miki @cachondo Itg's just not intuitive. In slack, for example, everything is super easy: F6 for moving, Ctrl+shift+L to go to channels tree, etc. Here… the interface is convoluted to the point I don't know where to go. Also, lots of pop-ups with some stuff called Nitro, try this, try that, and so on.
in reply to AndrΓ© Polykanine

@menelion @miki @cachondo See, Slack sounds complicated to me. I find it relatively intuitive to navigate between servers using control tab, to navigate to channels etc using headings and links, to find edit boxes... I don't know, I guess different things work for different people, and that's also okay.
in reply to Estelle

@miki @cachondo See? Headings and links. so again, virtual PC on, virtual PC off, it's sooo daunting!

in reply to daniel:// stenberg://

it's so crazy to explore tools like curl and find out how cool and useful it is and noticing that a lot of tools and products are using it in the background. Such a great accomplice but sadly not as monetarily rewarding as a good song or film, even so it is more useful (no shame on music and films but I prefer technical stuff for my entertainment ;..; )

It's a tragedy, and the handling is absolutely awful so far. A few more details:

Right after winning the election, the regional government abolished the regional emergency unit as a cost-cutting measure.
Urban planning failed in allowing to build in what are essentially dry riverbeds and became wet once again.
The state agency for meteorology had been giving warnings for days. Civil protection didn't issue warnings to citizens through their phones until flooding had already begun.
A far right pseudo-trade union has sued the director of the agency for reckless homicide.
The president of the region incorrectly stated that the phenomenon was remiting and heading elsewhere.
The region didn't ask the state to raise the emergency level to 3, in which case the state would take over the single command and deploy its own means to support. But now the region accuses the state of innaction. The region also didn't declare "situation of catastrophic emergency" which would have vested single command on the regional president, probably to elude legal responsibility.
Volunteers were rejected at first, then belatedly organised, and the region instead of sending them to help people in villages with cleaning, food and water delivery and so on, have at times sent them to clean shopping centres.

With that amount of rain it was always going to be bad. But the civil protection plan failed and the political conflict in the country is keeping administrations pointing the finger at each other. Very upsetting.

It's #FediBookFair weekend! All weekend, authors will be posting about books and related topics. Follow the hashtag to find new authors to follow, and books to read or buy as Christmas presents.

If this doesn't sound like fun, filter the hashtag. But if it does, please boost so that more people can join us.

We will boost as many posts as we can, and we encourage others to do the same.

Mastodon #Science people, I come to you, hat in hand, searching for a paper.

It was about using Corsi-Rosenthal boxes in schools, but it was fairly short, because the teachers in the study school kept turning off the C-R boxes. I do not know if they used the phrase "Corsi-Rosenthal" or if they just called it a DIY air cleaner/purifier.

Does anyone know this paper?

How a misinterpretation of a BMJ publication from 1996 caused (and yes, I do mean caused) the explosion in rates of peanut allergy.

In a nutshell: for decades the guidance issued in the USA and UK was the opposite of what it should have been and left a generation with preventable, life-threatening allergies.

People make fun of the β€œwhat happens in the booth stays in the booth” election ads, but I know poll workers who have had to keep husbands out of their wive’s voting booths because they had to β€œmake sure she votes right”. When I was phone banking I also talked with a woman who’s husband or boyfriend was clearly around and it almost definitely changed the nature of the call. Voter intimidation by men is a real problem and I’m glad these ads address it.

That moment you order something that costs a small fortune and find yourself worrying about other blind people judging you for it. I've seen some people going where do all these blind people get their expensive devices? While I do think that's a valid question and will absolutely acknowledge that many blind people have had to have help buying those devices (which by the way who cares?) some of us blind folks actually have worked our butts off to get those devices with our own money. So those in the blind community that grouch about how people are just using other people's money to buy devices that ultimately make their lives easier, shove off.

There's a lot weighing heavily on my mind right now. I can't go into it here, I'm sorry, but if you could, your thoughts and prayers are very much appreciated.
