Black Friday Accessibility: Tips for E-commerce Websites blog.usablenet.com/black-frida…

Well, I've taken the plunge and done it. Though I'm perfectly happy on X, I've joined BlueSky Social, mostly to check it out for accessibility and follow a few friends over there. @wesderby@bsky.social for anyone over there who's interested.
in reply to Jage

@Jage @DavidGoldfield @app Yeah…It can be done, it’s just clunky. I’ll keep it for a while and continue messing with it, but until it fixes its access issues, X and Mastodon will remain superior.

Peeps, is flatpak-pip-generator actually outputting checksums in the JSON for anyone? Did something break?

Has anyone found a really good WebDAV server for Android? Asking because you can actually mount those as network drives in Windows and interact with them through File Explorer. I currently use WiFi Pro FTP Server, which does exactly what you'd expect and does it well ... but is FTP/S. I'm finding myself interacting with my S10E's filesystem often enough that this would be really useful, and either MTP or USB2 is a huge bottleneck anyway.
in reply to x0

@x0 @masonasons @jscholes Somehow, I've never tried rclone before today. I just did (not even mount yet, which isn't my current use case) and I'm wondering why this has never been in my life before this point. I must have been living under a rock or something. I've heard of it before, but I thought it could only do S3 and hosting services like that. Turns out it can do... many services, including consumer ones.
in reply to Jamie Teh

@jcsteh @masonasons @jscholes I know right? THere's a post of mine a while back about how rclone is just one of those programs. I can use it for a Windows rsync equivalent when syncing directories too, it need not be remote. Unlike rsync it doens't do per-file deltas to my knowledge, it's all or nothing on a per-file basis, but at least it can track renames. And it's inherently trivial to sync entire directory trees. The ability to *mount* a webserver outputting an http index and download/sync from that as if it were, say, an NFS or FTP server is perhaps the coolest thing ever.

In the latest #MosenMove developments, Bonnie discovered a company run by a couple of entrepreneurial guys, called Bolt Bins. The site is accessible, and very easy since it uses Shop Pay, so it already knew who I was, had my payment details and knew our address.
Bolt Bins will quickly deliver a huge bin holding 1, 2 or 3 cubic meters of stuff. It’s kind of like an incredibly sturdy canvas bag. We’re using it to load more priceless, irreplaceable technological mementoes, or junk, depending on which of us you are talking to. Bah.
Then, when you’re done, you just push the request pickup button on the top of the website, and they pick it up and take it away! Cool! And effortless too.
But you mark my words, one day, Bonnie’s going to regret throwing out that old charger for, for, well whatever it once charged. You mark my words I tell you! And those floppy disks too! And the RS-232 cable.
in reply to Jonathan Mosen

I assume you are taking your parallel and serial cables with you as well? LOL

Some of y'all here would see a story about someone's experience with genocide written on Google docs or discussed on Zoom & attack those bringing this story to the fore for using the wrong platform.

Makes you look so incredibly privileged & out of touch.

The priority can be to reach as many people as possible using platforms that are easy for them to use, rather than proving that one is against Big Tech.

Same attitude that makes some of the most vulnerable people not want to use Mastodon.

in reply to André Polykanine

in reply to Kirill

in reply to André Polykanine

in reply to André Polykanine

in reply to Kirill

in reply to André Polykanine

in reply to Kirill

Правильно: «Je ne sais pas de quoi elle parle».
in reply to André Polykanine

in reply to André Polykanine

in reply to Kirill

Mastodon is benefitting from the #X exodus (eXodus?) too: The official app downloads are up 47% on iOS and 17% on Android. Sign-ups are up approx. 27% compared to previous month with about 90K new accounts, while the MAU has jumped to 894K (across all Mastodon servers).

Just to give everyone an update. They looked at the X-rays done on me this afternoon right away, and they saw the exact kidney stone that was giving me trouble. It was right where I said it was. Holy cuckoo clocks these things cause pain. But I think it's finally coming out. Kidney stones. I feel like some eged person discussing health issues.
in reply to Bruce Toews

Good one. No, honestly, it was not meant as a pun. I wouldn't joke about someone else's suffering; if the one doing the suffering wants to do so that's fine but it's not something I would ever intentionally do.
in reply to David Goldfield

@DavidGoldfield I didn't think so. But I had to be sure. And it is passing, so we won't call it suffering so much as infinitely painful inconvenience.

It's disturbing seeing some medical and public health professionals trying to normalize RFK Jr by saying "we have to meet him halfway."

NOPE.

RFK is a charlatan who has deliberately spread disinformation that has killed people.

Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back.

I've said this before, but I think Bluesky's growth spike should motivate folks who believe in the fediverse to build the sturdiest and most intuitive and safest fedi platforms they can in the next year or two, because if Bluesky does go the way you think it will, all those people heading there now will all need good homes.

(Full disclosure, I am going to mute this thread, as my kid says, immediently.)

Request Tracker, an open-source issue tracker we use at work, has had almost completely inaccessible dropdowns ever since 5.0. In the last couple days, I've been poking around, trying to work out why. They use Bootstrap 4.6, which is way behind, and even Bootstrap 5.x seems to have accessibility problems. They take an unordered list, a text input, and a hidden input, and try to simulate a select element. You know what's fully accessible? A SELECT ELEMENT! Just use what's already there, people!
in reply to Alex Hall

I heard back from Best Practical, makers of the Request Tracker ticket system we use at work. In 6.0, they plan to replace Bootstrap and some other libraries, which they hope will increase accessibility. They will also be adding form field labels. They claim CKEdit should already be accessible, but I thought it was notorious for not playing nicely with screen readers. All these are good fixes, but 6.0 is still a long way off.
in reply to Alex Hall

I always think about how companies prioritize fixing accessibility problems. If no sighted user could use the dropdowns in their software, you know there'd be a hotfix out in a few days. Because the problem only impacts screen reader users, though, it can wait the months or years until 6.0 comes out. Sure makes you feel good, doesn't it?
