Some really great books this week.
Someplace Else by D. R. Brown feels like an interconnected set of novellas, following AI as Humanity evolves to the stars.
If Wishes Were Retail by Auston Habershaw is a cosy story about a genie granting wishes in modern society (Alex's dad on the roof was sidesplittingly funny), and Line Magic by Kris Faatz was just such a wholesome, fill-you-up-with-goodness sort of a read.
I also revisited an old sci-fi favourite from the 1960's.

Does anyone have good readings on the disability framework of autonomy? Basically, what does autonomy look like in a disabled body that has lost or is losing capacity?

I'm not sure I'm wording this correctly, I kind of have a very vague notion about what this is in the first place.

Updated to add: I have created this list on Mille feuilles with some of the suggested readings in book form in the comments. Thank you so much! millefeuilles.cloud/list/97/s/… (However it's worth digging into the replies below anyway, several very interesting articles and online ressources have also been shared!)

So we JUST finished this panel on meaningful change and measurement for engineering organizations and you can already watch it, I am in awe of these thoughtful colleagues and grateful to have had the chance to share space with Liz and Lizzie and Jennifer! What a cool time.

@matthew It's much improved, but it's always disheartening to see the threads where people continue to make false assumptions about how it works or what is even possible in this ecosystem. A few of the remaining privacy checkboxes that concern people are going to be taken care of soon, and then they'll have to invent new reasons why it's not secure enough

Meanwhile they'll keep telling people they should use Signal which only makes sense if you can actually access Signal in your country. "The best" tool being designed in a way that makes it impossible to use by people who need it most is pretty goddamn stupid

Microsoft could potentially be about to give a bunch of people on Windows 10 a free additional year of support, if certain crazy requirements are met, this is crazy what the requirements are. windowslatest.com/2025/06/24/m…

@fireborn @dhamlinmusic This, and, at least in the apple ecosystem, it's technically possible to set up your device without an apple account, for all the good it'd do. And I don't believe apple's software updates are locked behind an apple ID sign-in, are they? That's my whole issue with Microsoft's thing right now. Security shouldn't be locked behind any conditions or obligations like this to hand over data.

Hey folks - for health reasons (mine, not hers!) I may need to soon re-home my amazing cat, Smalltalk! If you live in the SF Bay Area and might be interested, please ping me! She's truly a wonderful sweet creature! (She'd do best as an only pet.)

(Update 6/27: I’ve found a couple wonderful humans and am exploring options w them. Thank you all for your help!)

so, today I found out that it's confirmed.
I've got until november to find work.
The accessibility contract that the government had is no longer going to be renewed.
The best part is, they're going to buy the accessibility tool and do all the work in house.
But don't worry, people who have had no training in accessibility, who no nothing about html or wcag should be able to do the work just fine and it'll save a lot of money in the porcess!
So, if anyone knows anyone that's hiring, please feel free to send them my way!
