From the Blinux list, my thoughts below the quote:

"Hello to all.

This is partly a (re)introduction and some good news (news for definitely not all, but some) of you.

This message is actually send to two lists, as I have no clue how big intersection of the member lists there are (I suppose huge, but not complete), so sorry for double receiving, you who are in both lists.

And now, with the disclaimers out of the way... I started to be interested in Linux, say ten or twelve years ago (don't remember exactly). Through a set of happy coincidences, I managed to get a job at Red Hat in the desktop team, and because accessibility was in the times of the reorg an important thing, a tools and accessibility team actually was created. It is quite a small team, and the majority of people on it do not have work time to do anything with accessibility (we're maintaining some of the Gnome apps, we do RHEL packaging, testing etc.).

However, I am working on the accessibility related things every day, so don't be afraid to ask something, mention your issues, and such.

Personally, in terms of distributions, I use GNome on Arch (personal laptop) and Fedora (work laptop), so I have the most experience with these setups, but I definitely used Mate, and tried Kde for some time as well.

And, that's it for now. "

So, a small team, that barely has time to do what the team is about. This is really sad. This is what people with disabilities get from one of the biggest Linux companies there is.

Tech people talk about tech too much.

I really really REALLY want to use all the awesome privacy friendly FOSS (and similar) stuff, but I am not a techie person! I don't know how to program, nor do I want to.

And every SINGLE time I try to find out even what thing (OS, program, app, service, etc) to use, let alone how, and I search for it... I get techie-focused answers.

It's complete gibberish to me! Absolutely useless. It makes me feel actively unwelcome even though I really care about using alternatives to Windows, Meta, X and other dystopic nonsense.

For example: I'm like "How do I start a non-enshittified group chat to talk about a thing?" and all the results are technobabble to me. I don't even know if the words they use are supposed to be normal english words or if they refer to orgs or groups or apps or some weird coding wizardry.

I am so lost, every single time.

I stick with it though. But like. I wonder if the tech people realise that this is happening???? Because they probably understand what they're talking about. And they seem to not realise that not everyone does.

I'm not trying to blame or shame anyone or even complaining as such (a little bit complaining, ngl), mostly just giving feedback. This is not an issue with a singe thing but with ALL of it as a whole! Including #GNU #Linux the #Fediverse #Matrix and most #FOSS apps.

My sincere wish: Give non-techie people an EASY TO FIND and easy to read and easy to understand and easy to implement guide about how to use the things as an alternative to using big corporation services, ie, "I just want it to work" and not have to worry about the technical side of things. (examples in thread)

It is once again time to give thanks to Brian Fox, the Black American programmer that has given us BASH and echo! Thank you for your INCREDIBLE contributions to open source software, Unix, and Linux. It literally would not be the same without you. BASH is still absolutely foundational to all computing today. Happy Black History Month to an absolute icon!

To #Linux or to #GNU? Linux is a kernel, not an operating system. There are not many other OSes with a Linux kernel. GNU, Android and Musl distributions are the most common if not the only ones. The rest are derivations of them. For example µClibc is a GNU implementation.

I've just posted a release candidate for #GNU #Autoconf 2.72. Please spread the word and test it as thoroughly as possible **in the next 48 hours**. If I don't hear about any show-stopper bugs I intend to make the final release at about this time on Friday, Dec. 22, 2023.

If I *do* hear about show-stopper bugs, the release is going to be pushed back until end of January 2024 at the earliest because I'll be on vacation for the next three weeks.

We're now working on filling the remaining gaps so this can become an actual reality on the #gnome (and generally #linux / #fdo / #gnu) desktop. And what can I say - things actually work out quite nicely! While on modern Intel or AMD systems the effect is mostly about lower resource consumption, on some low-end hardware there are visible differences on what you can play fluently.

When a Free Software project (Profanity) is run by a jackass.

Just did a simple PR that changed a Ellipsis Char that does not display well on Arch Linux TTY (because it is a newer char), to 3 dots. A simple change.

It was not approved (after much time), although, in all the rest of the source code, 3 dots are used (3 dots is used 26 times in the source code). There is only one instance of the Ellipsis char, and it was this that the PR was changing to 3 dots.

40k users, 50k projects. We're providing service to so many, this was unbelievable four years ago when #Codeberg was founded.

Thank you for supporting our mission. Together we fight the monopoly of proprietary platforms, and work towards a future where websites are hosted by non-profit associations and federate with each other.

Big thanks to: #Gitea + #Forgejo, #Debian #GNU/#Linux and all these nice people in the #FLOSS community. You rock! 💙

I used to depend on the Web to look for UNICODE characters, but not anymore. Now I use my system:

1️⃣ Alt + F2

2️⃣ gnome-characters

3️⃣ Type "lock"

And that's it. Very nice.

Once they add support for searching in more languages other than English, it will be great.

hi, I am teaching my own computing course online based on software freedom in Indonesia since 2017.

This course helps people switch from Windows to GNU/Linux, or more precisely from proprietary to free software.

This course makes all students use LibreOffice Writer, Calc, and Impress. They always save as #OpenDocumentFormat. They practice #LibreOffice on all operating systems, preferably #GNU, in their computing life.

I named this course Teknoplasma.

A Letter to #Discord for not Supporting the #Linux Desktop

theevilskeleton.gitlab.io/2022…

I rewrote the whole article because I sounded extremely rude before. It's not nice to be rude to developers, whether you like them or not; whether the application is open source or not. Hopefully this revision is respectful and doesn't sound like I am shaming them.
