Prefer Not to Say
I am filling out yet another form
On which I am asked my gender
And then given only 3 options to choose from
Man, woman, and “prefer not to say”
I have seen it too many times
And as someone who is not a man
And is not a woman
But who has a hell of a lot to say
I will be
From this point forward
Formally requesting
No
I will be DEMANDING
That every form or survey that gives me an option
Of prefer not to say
Also gives me an option
Of prefer to shout
An option of
I have spent far too long being forced “not to say”
And I refuse to stay quiet any longer
Or better yet
A blank box
Give me a blank box
And I will write you an epic poem
About how I spent years trying to find myself
Only to realize I had been calling out the wrong name
I’ll find a way in 100 characters
To write a thesis
Examining theories of why
Even after countless hits
Each new gut punch of erasure
Somehow hurts as much as the first one did
Or remove the character limit
If finally accepting my gender taught me anything
It was that limiting myself
Is no way to live
So give me unlimited space
And let me write you a book
Titled “Enby Euphoria”
Filled with stories that will make you laugh
And cry
And understand why this matters
Because at the end of the day
That’s what I really want
For you to understand why this matters
To understand THAT this matters
And I will never get a chance to explain any of that to you
If you keep making me check a box
Next to the words
Prefer not to say

Desert Bus 2024, Day 4. Dan Olson is a thoughtful person. Welcome to the unhinged madness that is Desert Bus for Hope; please come again!
I felt like the words speak for themselves and needed very little. I edited and formatted them into a contemporary poem, and added a little accent. That's all.

I made a Classical Chinese Poetry Bingo to help people recognize the common tropes and motifs.🤣 These show up frequently in the modern poetry I translate as well. Do you recognize anything from your readings or from pop culture? Tag yourself. I'm "feeling sad on a boat" lol

The curious shadow stands in my room.
It gets what it wants, nothing left to assume.
When it cries, your soul flies,
Away from this gorgeous, frightening crimes.
The curious shadow's now closer to me.
It stares at me, and consumes my fear.
I'm chained to bed, I can't even move,
But the curious shadow is still in my room.

"The face, which, duly as the sun,
Rose up for me with life begun,
To mark all bright hours of the day
With hourly love, is dimmed away —
And yet my days go on, go on."
De Profundis (1862)

Stay Home
by Wendell Berry
I will wait here in the fields to see how well the rain brings on the grass.
In the labor of the fields longer than a man's life
I am home. Don't come with me.
You stay home too.
I will be standing in the woods where the old trees move only with the wind and then with gravity.
In the stillness of the trees
I am at home. Don't come with me.
You stay home too.

✨#introduction ✨ Hello everyone! I'm Greg, and I'm a writer looking for a nice home and community. I’m mostly a #scifi writer (and reader/watcher) and have been working on flash fiction and poetry as of late, on my way to working up towards longer fiction.
Here’s a small sample of some recent #haiku, ranging from #fanfiction for #Cyberpunk2077 to random #photography moments. (At which I’m trying to get better, and marry it to my love of writing.)
