I can't believe that the UK would even contemplate deporting an 8 year old and an 12 year old to Brazil alone. This is the letter the home office sent the 11 year old:

“I am satisfied that there are no serious or compelling reasons to grant you settlement. I am satisfied that you could return to Brazil and continue your education in Brazil where you would have the option to attend an English-speaking school.

Whilst this may involve a degree of disruption in family life this is considered to be proportionate to the legitimate aim of maintaining effective immigration control.”

I'm ashamed at the actions of this country.

Anyone who is blind, or who has worked with the blind, knows how expensive our technology can be. This couldn't be more true with relation to braille displays. Even the cheapest costs at least $799, and it's already behind the newest in that line, at $899. This is the Orbit Reader 20 and 20+. Now, a student in India wants to change that by creating a display that is truly affordable (under $50)! Please pass this on, so that we can give him greater recognition within the blind community. Even if it costs a bit more than he initially suspected it would, there is no excuse for the $2,000 to $5,000 average price of such technology when cheaper alternatives can be designed! He is determined to bring this to market, so let's help him do it and show our appreciation for his hard work on this life-changing project!

"We ask children to do for most of a day what few adults could do for even an hour. How many of us, attending, say, a lecture that doesn't interest us, can keep our mind from wandering? Hardly any."

John Holt

May we raise children who love the unloved things.
What a beautiful line.

While it is good that more #regulations are coming for #online platforms (and #COPPA must go), it remains to be said that the well-being of #children should not rely on for-profit businesses: No regulation will deter them from milking the unsuspecting kids. Parents and teachers, on the other hand, should adapt to the reality: neither laissez-faire nor strong-arm, but communication through knowledge and empathy, will lead the new generations onto the right track.
