A raptor has landed on a tree outside our window! It’s SO big, I could tell immediately from its swoopy landing that it was not a regular birb, and then I found my binoculars and yeah, it’s a biggun. A hawk I think?

Looks a little floofy, like it’s been through it a bit (or maybe it’s just a juvenile?). But seemed healthy, spent a good ten minutes peering down at the town, swaying back and worth as the tree moved in the wind.

Here's another family of baby birds from my travels this week. It's a female Pāpango / NZ scaup with seven ducklings (scauplings?).

I saw them on the Ōpāwaho / Heathcote River on my bike ride home from work yesterday.

I briefly stopped to get better photos and the longer I stayed the fewer scauplings there were to see. They're diving ducks, after all. 😀

Here are some baby birds I've seen this week, all in and around Ōtautahi-Christchurch city, NZ.

There's baby Canada geese along Sparks Road (the first time I've seen baby geese in this area of the city): inaturalist.nz/observations/32…

There's teeny baby ring-necked pheasants running across McDrurys Road: inaturalist.nz/observations/32…

There's grey teal ducklings with parents on an emphemeral creek along Robinsons Road (the first time I've seen baby grey teal here in the 22 years I've been biking this road to work): inaturalist.nz/observations/32…

And, there's teeny baby California quail running across Latters Spur track: inaturalist.nz/observations/32…

Of these, only the grey teal are NZ natives.

"I found that penguins differed in their reactions to being hoisted between human legs. Some were calm, mildly befuddled at how they got a foot off the ground. Others acted as if they were possessed, squirming and slapping and biting. Penguins are beefy birds, sleek bullets of swimming muscle, torpedoes of power, and they slapped impressively hard."

Regularly out in the countryside of Andalucia & further afield posting info & images about my adventures & encounters with the natural world.

Here's a photo of a close encounter with Iberian Lynx I took a few years ago.

The number 1 rule of photography is to capture the things that give you joy. I went to the lake tonight, I missed the best light and thought I wouldn't get anything good. But it was warm, and peaceful and as the sun sank the water turned pink and the pied stilts came across the shore right in front of me and I thought it was beautiful so I took some photos of them and their reflections. I've had to apply some serious de-noising as these photos were taken in the almost dark and I've also taken the liberty of removing some little black splodges that were marring the mirror perfect water. I think these give a good FEEL of the serenity of the moment, although obviously I can't capture the whole experience of sunset outdoors on an unseasonably warm Autumn night. #birds #birdphotography

I love how France has both so many birds and also so many wind farms. We can build sustainable solutions that support powering our economy and a also wildlife.
