Update. I recommend @mmasnick's good take on the ruling against the @internetarchive and #CDL.
techdirt.com/2024/09/05/second…

"What would you think if an author told you they would have written a book, but they wouldn’t bother because it would be available to be borrowed for free from a library? You’d probably think they were delusional. Yet that argument has now carried the day."

Update. Here's more detail on the court decision against the #InternetArchive (@internetarchive) and controlled digital lending (#CDL).

I just signed this petition from the #InternetArchive (@internetarchive) and hope you will too.
change.org/p/let-readers-read-…

Background from IA:
"We are disappointed in today’s opinion about the Internet Archive’s digital lending of books that are available electronically elsewhere. We are reviewing the court’s opinion and will continue to defend the rights of #libraries to own, lend, and preserve books."

In light of the Internet Archive losing its appeal to hachette, I just wanted to point out some websites you should avoid:

* annas-archive.li/
* downmagaz.net/
* ebook-hunter.org/
* forcoder.net/
* freemagazines.top/
* liber3.eth.limo/

If you were to download books from these websites, you might cut into hachette's more than three billion dollars of annual revenue. So make sure to avoid those websites and the following:

* libgen.is/
* oceanofpdf.com/
* pdfroom.com/
* pdfstop.com/
* pdfdrive.to/
* pdfmagazines.club/
* sci-hub.se/
* singlelogin.re/
* ... or any of the other sites listed at rentry.co/megathread-books

So OpenAI can use everything ever posted on the internet to train their AI, but Internet Archive can't scan and upload books for people to borrow?? Got it. 🙄

The Internet Archive lost its appeal in the Hachette case. What a huge, devastating loss for all of us.

Let Readers Read

#InternetArchive: "Our position is straightforward; we just want to let our library patrons borrow and read the books we own, like any other library. [...] But the publishers suing our library say we shouldn’t be allowed to lend the books we own. They have forced us to remove more than half a million books from our library, and that’s why we are appealing".

I just signed this open letter and hope you will too.
change.org/p/let-readers-read-…

"Ask publishers to restore access to the 500,000 books they’ve caused to be removed from the Internet Archive’s lending library."

@internetarchive

The central holding of the #InternetArchive court opinion is, if you own a physical book and scan it, you infringed the author's copyright by creating an unauthorized copy—even if you never use both at the same time. (This also implies that printing an ebook = infringement.)

That's quite bad.
