The #trade deal signed during Trump’s previous presidency included the compromise that Canada would extend its #copyright term from lifetime+50 years to lifetime+70 years, to match the USA, at the request of American media enterprises.

If that trade deal isn’t being respected, why is Canada still protecting foreign corporate profits?

Shorten the copyright term to a flat 20 years. Let Star Wars, Michael Jackson, and most of Disney’s copyrighted material enter the public domain in Canada so that we can share and remix them. And we can free Harry Potter while we’re at it ✨

I’ve been on Fedi for a year now and have fallen in love with the platform, so here’s my introduction! Most notable to me:
* The court ruled against controlled digital lending (#CDL), not just the short-lived and less-controlled National Emergency Library (#NEL).
* The court found "market harm" to #publishers even tho pubs submitted no data on that harm.
* The court recognized the right of conventional lending by print #libraries but (IMHO) waffled when trying to square its rationale with that right.

When y’all argue to abolish copyright so you can use other people’s photos, be aware that you are aren’t sticking it to corporations. You’re mostly sticking it indie artists who barely make rent.

Photographers, on average, make about $18/hr. That’s about half the rate of a high school teacher. Asking them to give up rights to their work is not a great look.
