I was asked this question at an Expo in Melbourne this week, and I’m fine repeating it here: for high school, higher study, and vocation: - Mac OS Voiceover with comparable apps still not comparable to Windows screen readers and apps. Fine for home or general computer tasks.

@CallumStoneman My only reservation with the iPad was that writing documents at length was proving tricky last I looked. If you need to produce a well-formatted report with headings, perhaps a table of contents etc, it was never as slick as with windows. Same for spellchecking.

I'd love to see that has improved, though!

@cachondo @CallumStoneman I'm all for lightweight devices so long as kids get a good education on learning screen readers and using Windows devices as this is what they will encounter in the workplace. I know someone who is blind who wanted to use an iPad for her daily work driver, that isn't going to happen in a corporate setting. She didn't know how to use Windows or office making her essentially unemployable.

Another always relevant comic for #USPol

We just need to swap out the names of some of the companies so it's now things like microsoft, google, amazon, exxonmobil, at&t, boeing. etc.

An early 1900s cartoon labeled the bosses of the senate. There's a bunch of small men, presumably senators, hunched over small wooden desks. Behind them are a bunch of gigantic overweight men in top hats and black jackets, but their shirt looks like a giant bag of money. Their a labeled things like: Steel beem trust, Copper trust, Standard Oil, Coal. Behind them is a door way labeled entrance for monopolists.

Part of that effort to divide and conquer would be a “well- planned ‘hate campaign’ against minority races, religions, and other groups.” Second, they would deny any need for international cooperation, because that would fly in the face of their insistence that their supporters were better than everyone else. “In place of international cooperation, the fascists seek to substitute a perverted sort of ultra-nationalism which tells their people that they are the only people in the world who count. With this goes hatred and suspicion toward the people of all other nations.” Third, fascists would insist that “the world has but two choices—either fascism or communism, and they label as ‘communists’ everyone who refuses to support them.” It is “vitally important” to learn to spot native fascists, the government said, “even though they adopt names and slogans with popular appeal, drape themselves with the American flag, and attempt to carry out their program in the name of the democracy they are trying to destroy.”

@NVAccess It's not so much you guys. It's that everytime I update most things, things break in ways that detract from my overall productivity and workflow. Addons don't work and I have to wait for devs to fix that, features and functionalities get moved around. Sometimes things change so much that it's like having to learn an application all over again.

So when I mean against my better judgement, it's me commenting on the fact that no software upgrade comes without its pitfalls, so it's not an exclusively you all thing.

Thanks! And that's all fair enough. We try not to move settings around too often, but you ran into this one. With add-ons, while we do get developers to check them each year, it is also possible to override them being marked incompatible quite simply in the add-on store - though do that with caution. Press NVDA+p - this cycles between the symbol levels. Symbol level none will read "Hello.," as just "hello", Symbol level Some or Most will it as "Hello dot", and symbol level all will read it as "Hello dot comma". At least, that is how it works with Windows OneCore or eSpeak.
