В 2022-м я сказал совету директоров, что нам нужна своя LLM. Своя. Суверенная. На триллион параметров.
Почему триллион? Потому что у GPT-4 — триллион. Я прочитал это в телеграм-канале. Канал назывался «ИИ на минималках». 50 000 подписчиков. Значит, правда.
Мне выделили бюджет. 2,3 миллиарда рублей. Я сказал «это инвестиция в технологический суверенитет». Никто не спросил, что это значит.
Я тоже не знал.

Купили 256 карточек V100. Не A100. V100. Потому что A100 под санкциями. V100 — нет. V100 вышли в 2017-м. Но я сказал «проверенное решение». Проверенное означает старое. Старое означает дешёвое. Дешёвое на вторичке в Дубае.

Наняли команду. 40 человек. ML-инженеры. Большинство не работали с LLM. Но у них были сертификаты ОТУСА. Сертификаты — это компетенции. Компетенции — это строчка в отчёте.

Тимлид спросил, почему триллион параметров на 256 V100. Сказал, что у Meta на LLaMA 70B было 2000 A100. Я сказал «у нас другой подход». Он спросил какой. Я сказал оптимизированный. Он спросил как именно оптимизированный. Я назначил ему встречу по пересмотру грейда. Он уволился. Я написал в отчёте «оптимизация штата».

Восемь месяцев обучения. Модель не сходилась. Лосс был плоский. Инженер сказал, что данных мало. У нас было 200 гигабайт текстов. Госзакупки, диссертации, Лента.ру. Он сказал, что у LLaMA — 2 триллиона токенов. Я сказал «качество важнее количества». Это не так. Но звучит мудро.
На девятый месяц модель заговорила.

Она говорила странное. На вопрос «столица Франции» отвечала «в соответствии с пунктом 3.2 технического задания». На вопрос «кто президент России» выдавала «Дмитрий Анатольевич Медведев». Датасет был старый. Я назвал это «историческая глубина модели». Инженеры называли это по-другому. Но их мнение не шло в презентации.

Запустили в прод. Назвали «НейроРусь-1Т». Лого — медведь с нейросетью в голове. Лого стоило 4 миллиона. Агентство сказало, что медведь символизирует «мощь российского ИИ». Я согласился. Медведи мощные.

Первый месяц. 3 000 запросов. 2 800 — от тестировщиков. 150 — от журналистов. 50 — случайные. NPS — минус 40. Я убрал NPS из дашборда. Метрика была «не релевантна стратегическим целям».

Купили статью в РБК. 1 миллион рублей. Заголовок: «Российская нейросеть НейроРусь составит конкуренцию ChatGPT». Журналист спросил, можно ли потестировать. Я сказал «после публикации». Он опубликовал.

В статье было написано «по словам разработчиков, модель превосходит западные аналоги в понимании российского контекста». Это я сказал. Я не разработчик. Но они не возражали.
РБК поставили статью в раздел «Технологии». 400 000 просмотров. Комментарии отключили превентивно. Негатив не соответствовал редакционной политике.

Четвёртый месяц. Поняли, что модель хуже ГигаГпт 6. ГигаГпт 6 хуже Claude Sonnet. Задача: создать бенчмарк, на котором мы победим. Назвали «РусКонтекст-1000». Тысяча вопросов о российской культуре. Кто написал «Войну и мир». Столица Бурятии. Как зовут кота Медведева.
Запустили бенчмарк. НейроРусь набрала 34%. GPT-4 набрал 67%. Наш бенчмарк. Мы проиграли на своём поле.

Шестой месяц. Стали покупать ГигаГпт 6 за 990 рублей за 1м токенов. Это как Claude Sonnet в API. Только ГигаГпт 6 хуже Sonnet в три раза. Я измерил. На вопрос «напиши код сортировки» ГигаГпт 6 выдал код с багами. Sonnet - рабочий кода. Но Sonnet - иностранный. Иностранный - плохо. Баги - отечественные. Отечественное - хорошо.

Купили 4 000 лицензий ГигаГпт 6 . 47 миллионов в год. За качество Claude по цене Claude, но в три раза хуже Claude. Зато в реестре отечественного ПО. Реестр важнее. Качество - субъективно. Реестр - объективен.

Старший разработчик спросил, почему не DeepSeek. DeepSeek - бесплатный. DeepSeek лучше ГигаГпт 6 . Я сказал «китайские бэкдоры». Он спросил какие именно. Я сказал «все». Он спросил, есть ли пруфы. Я сказал «есть, но засекречены». Он спросил кем. Я сказал «органами». Он не уточнил какими. Органы — это серьёзно.

Другой разработчик притащил Qwen 2.5. Показал, что он умнее НейроРуси в пять раз. Я сказал «некорректное сравнение». Он спросил почему. Я сказал «разные методологии оценки». Он спросил какие методологии у нас. Я сказал «сертифицированные». Он попросил сертификаты. Я назначил ему встречу с HR. Тема: «Соответствие корпоративным ценностям». Он понял. Он удалил Qwen.

В июне — ПМЭФ. Тигран Греф будет выступать. Я буду рядом. На слайде за его спиной — наш кейс. Медведь с нейросетью. 40 000 часов. График вверх и вправо.
В сентябре — совещание у Президента. Тема: «Технологический суверенитет в сфере искусственного интеллекта». Я подготовил речь. Три минуты. 400 слов. Ключевые: суверенитет — 7 раз, безопасность — 5 раз, прорыв — 4 раза, мировой уровень — 3 раза.

Покажу демо. НейроРусь ответит на вопрос «Какие задачи стоят перед Россией в сфере ИИ?». Мы зашили ответ хардкодом. На случай галлюцинаций. Галлюцинации перед Президентом - это не галлюцинации. Это статья.

Путин кивнёт. Кивок - это одобрение. Одобрение - это госконтракты. Госконтракты - это ещё 5 миллиардов. 5 миллиардов - это ещё три года. Три года - это ещё 15 отчётов. 15 отчётов - это еще 4м рублей премии в конце года. Я куплю квартиру в выхино.

No single person has ever reinvented all the wheels and built something genuinely useful.

You can reinvent all the things for fun and for education, but then that's all you will achieve. Enjoyment and education. That's fine, if that is your goal.

If you want to actually build something people will use, you have to stand on the shoulders of giants. You get to reinvent one thing, and reinvent that one single thing well. Maybe two.

Believing you can single-handedly redo the work of thousands of people across dozens of (sub)fields, and do a better job than them, so much so that people will actually believe your work is superior and choose to use it, is pure lunacy.

Unless you can recruit your own team of hundreds or thousands of people, of course... but for that you have to be a (very) good leader.

I normally don't like to use the blind card, but the utter crap Chris went through yesterday is completely unexcusable and unexceptible. He was scheduled for a sleep study and called ahead to let them know he is visually impaired and would need assistance walking from security to the sleep lab. The lovely individual was like well can you have someone come with you? Chris was like no my roommate and wife are blind and my wife is working. She was like well until you find someone to come with you we're canceling your study. When will people get it through their heads.Blind does not mean stupid and we aren't born with a magic sighted assistant to do everything. I did mention to the doctor that the next time he referrs him to a sleep specialest or anywhere she needs to note taht he is visually impared and will need assistance. It's 2025 people really need to realize what inclusion is and how to make that work.

@cachondo There are now two versions of Mona on the app store, 6 and 7. You probably have Mona 6 right now, you might have noticed it changed names. Other than possible bug fixes, 6 won't be getting any further upgrades. Mona 7 is now just called "Mona."
Back when you upgraded to the full version of Mona 6, you either bought a single-device upgrade or the "pro max" upgrade. If it was the pro max, you've unlocked a lifetime upgrade option in Mona 7 that isn't available to other people. If you haven't bought the pro max upgrade in Mona 6, it's $10 and you might want to check whether it's still available as an in-app purchase in Mona 6, because otherwise you're locked into a subscription. The grandfathered lifetime upgrade from Mona 6 to Mona 7 is $20 USD. So you end up spending the equivalent of $30 US total, if I'm not mistaken.
Hope fatherhood 2.0 has lots of good parts to balance out the sleeplessness.

Сегодня папу внезапно заинтересовало, насколько мне выгоднее печь хлеб в хлебопечке в сравнении с покупным.

При очень округляемых подсчетах расходников и электричества получилось, что булка белого 0,75 гр мне обходится в примерно 20,5 рублей. Я бы сказал, вполне, вполне. Это без учета того, что хлеб точно свежий, на него никто не чихал, и я точно знаю, что внутри.

The first two recommendations in the report call on Statistics Canada to explore and report on the development of a “productivity measurement program” for the public service, and for agencies to develop productivity metrics for departments and agencies that provide direct services to Canadians.

And boy do I put prodigious amounts of everything into the slop machine.

I don't use a drop of the output, but my job is now feeding it reports and pretending it's not making shit up.

I am burning a forest down for this, basically.

At my childhood home we had a Panasonic microwave that could automatically cook potatoes to perfection and you could program sequences with different power levels, two features that I really loved.

After 30 years of service it stopped working, but turns out you can still get basically the same thing from Panasonic, only slightly modernised on the outside, inverter on the inside.

It wasn’t made “smart” with IoT, it’s not different for the sake of it. It worked then, it works now. More of this.

People use ad blockers to protect their computers from scams and malware because Google and other ad companies have failed to do so. They put profit above everything else. I can't believe this guy is on a mission to kill Firefox by the end of this year. People who use ad blockers are also less likely to buy your product if you bug them too much. I can't believe Mozilla has fallen to this level, where the CEO openly issues soft threats for a product that has little market share left.

Any apt experts out there? I'm trying to add MSSQL to a Debian-based image. I can do it, but the instructions use apt-key, which is deprecated. The articles I've read about the new way, using [signed-by=/path/keyfile.gpg] in my .list or .sources file, all talk about GPG keys. The problem is that Microsoft supplies a .asc file that contains a PGP key, not a GPG key. What do I do?

Also, the genius that decided the two key types should be GPG and PGP deserves to never sleep on a dry pillow again.

Comparing the early internet with the Sloponet that we are sliding into currently is mind boggling to me.

The early internet gave more people more tools to easier publish and learn and collaborate.

The slopfest centralizes knowledge so that you can only exist when you’re in a symbiotic relationship with an LLM that you pay a lot of money for when the bubble pops.

The internet distributed knowledge, the sloponet centralizes it and gives you only the bits you explicitly ask for.

@graham I'll describe approximately, if you want, I'll record a voice message. first you pronounce the "beau" like "boh" but without the final w component, so like "law" but the sound is more closed, closer to "oo". then, you drop the H (it's not read in French), you pronounce "ar" like the verb "are". then, you pronounce "nwah", so it's N, then W, then A as in Father. Boh-Ar-Nwah.

@menelion @graham This actually makes a ton of sense especially as I took some French up to early high school. It was that transition from “eau” to the silent “h” that was tripping me up. Sure, if you’ve got the motivation to record a voice message, I’d be curious, but if not, I imagine the internet has recordings. I was just exceptionally lazy, and more amused that the first name I had trouble with was right here in my home country. On the west coast there are about seven languages that are vastly more common than French, so it’s not as emphasized in the education system as it would be in Ontario and other neighbouring provinces.
