One of my few New Years traditions is to read and share the New Years wishes from @neilhimself. Here's the one from 2014 (Be Kind), which seems extra appropriate this year on social media, and the one from 2011 (Make Mistakes), which is my favorite.

You can read them all at journal.neilgaiman.com/search/…

A new year means new works entering the public domain – which means a new Public Domain Game Jam!

There are tons of great works from 1927 that are now free to remix. Come join @mmasnick Leigh Beadon and me for 'Gaming Like It's 1927' to celebrate: itch.io/jam/gaming-like-its-19…

Since the last few official #Matrix holiday updates didn't mention as many of the cool community projects as I would have liked, I tried to work with the community to publish a community side review of 2022 as well as possibly some small teasers of what 2023 will bring. There are a lot of very varied updates, since everyone seems to have tackled the challenge differently, but I hope you you enjoy the result as much as I did: blog.neko.dev/posts/matrix-yea…

The CDC's new policy to test international travelers from China for COVID is racist and will likely increase racist and xenophobic anti-Asian attacks - which have been happening throughout the pandemic - and does nothing to stop the COVID variants currently spreading in the US.

This policy is a continuation of long-standing discrimination in the United States against people of color, where anti-Asian racism fuels medical ignorance, placing blame on Chinese people for the failings of the US. Read "The long history of anti-Asian hate in America, explained" in Vox for
background - t.co/qvAuNKS016

These travel restrictions, much like the South African travel ban earlier this year, happen even while the US and European countries are having COVID surges, suggesting COVID is only dangerous when it comes from China or other non-European countries.

If this were about collective safety, all international and domestic flights would require negative COVID testing. Mask mandates (with high filtration masks) would return. Not only that, but one negative test without any isolation protocol will not prevent transmission.

This policy is ineffective and only serves to point the finger at who is to blame.

The house is aflame and the US government is more concerned with scapegoating someone lighting a candle than actually putting out the fire.

I was gifted a copy of this book by Tor Teen Publishing. I have not read it yet. But I’m excited to read it. It follows a pair of Black, magical twins who have to solve the thirty year old murder of their mother in order to save the New Orleans magical community from utter destruction. #bookstodon #blackbookstodon #writingcommunity #amwriting #bipocauthors #writewithmichael #dybpublishing

@blindscribe At the top of the book cover on small font it says “Blood Debts”. Below that in large font it says “Justice Will Reign”. There is a review in smaller font below the large title that says “Will have you breathless - Chloe Gong”. The author’s name is “Terry J. Benton-Walker” and appears at the bottom. Would you also like a description of the picture on the cover, as your request is only asking for the title? #Alt4You

Wiki Arch Linux CZ

Émilie du Châtelet, who hypothesized conservation of energy, established kinetic energy as distinct from momentum and proportional to (speed)², and combined work by Newton and Leibniz with her own original ideas in "Institutions de Physique," was born #OTD in 1706.

Du Châtelet is an important figure in the development of classical physics, but she is not nearly as well known as many of her male contemporaries.

As the incorrect version of the World's Longest Train trip map is doing the rounds again... here is the *correct* one

It's Cascais 🇵🇹 to Woodlands 🇸🇬 - a geodesic distance of 11904.73km

Add trams, metros and the Changi Airport Skytrain and you can manage 11929.33km

And if you want the full explanation it's here: jonworth.eu/the-longest-train-…

Boost request for a person who did an awesome thing for accessibility.
Hey folks, I would like to call upon the Mastodon community to boost the individual who made the Youtube video linked here. Let me explain. This wonderful person took a video that was only published in Japanese, (a video where Nintendo's Sakurai discussed The Last of Us Part 1's accessibility features in great detail talking about how great they were for quality of life), and on their own time, with their own setup, voluntarily, dubbed the video in English for us blind folks so we could appreciate it too. This especially meant a lot to me, as I worked on those accessibility features, and felt kinda honored to be indirectly complimented by Sakurai. Anyway, long story short, if you ever need this kind of voiceover work done, or audio editing, hire this guy. They deserve some promotion after this awesome work. Oh, and they are also a coder!!! Hire them for that, too! :) youtube.com/watch?v=dWosA-2-Ze…

In 1993 alt text was added to the HTML specification. Someone then posted an idea: A library where people could store and look up alt text for frequently used images. I've lost the post, and no one else that I can find has talked about it since.

I believe that the time is now, but I can no longer be who. As I announced yesterday, I am closing down the alt-text.org project, but others have expressed interest in carrying the project forward.
