A year on Mastodon, a reflection by Heise Online

German news organisation Heise Online has written up an extensive report (in German) on their first year on Mastodon. Some key takeaways:

“Mastodon alone generated around two thirds as many visits to the sitein the twelve months as X/Twitter overall. At the same time, this should not obscure the fact that the absolute numbers are comparatively low; Twitter was never really relevant as a traffic source for media like Heise Online.”

Their statistics also show that activity in the fediverse has noticeably slowed down: “access via Mastodon reached its peak around the turn of the year. Since then they have been slowly declining.” And: “of the 20 most popular posts on Mastodon, half come from the first three months [of the year]”.

On community interaction: “If there are direct questions or other requests to express yourself, no other social network is as busy online as Mastodon. But here too the numbers are now declining; Mastodon and the Fediverse have apparently no longer been able to really benefit from the recent waves of farewells at X/Twitter.”

But there is more to a network that engagement numbers, as Heise Online points to the both the high quality as well as quantity of comments on the fediverse. They also indicate the low cost (less than 100 EUR/month) and effort of participating in the fediverse. As other news organisations (BBC, the Dutch NPO) are joining the fediverse, they can learn from the experience that Heise Online already has here.

The JSON-LD Playground web app is very useful for validating or exploring #ActivityPub data. However, if you prefer the command line or want to integrate Playground-like functionality into scripts, the ld-cli program could be useful. It’s definitely been useful for me. Features include: expand, compress, flatten, frame and conversion to/from RDF (N-Quads).

Github has declared that while “GitHub was founded on Git, today it is re-founded on Copilot”.

I don’t write code regularly on the side anymore but I’m curious about whether this is Microsoft corporate hype or if LLM-based coding assistance will be as impactful to software developers as was the seismic shift that was Open Source & hosted git.

Do people using Github Copilot feel this way?

The bar for claiming your device will replace the smartphone is almost insurmountably high. Smartphones are devices that everyone uses everywhere all the time.

I remember visiting Nigeria years ago and seeing goat herders with smartphones. There are 5.25 billion smartphone users today

You can use them in almost any social situation often while doing other things like eating a meal or watching TV.

Battery life is means you can use them all day.

Can AI pins beat that?

Excellent writeup by @prokoudine about redesigning menus of complex programs. I love this solution of using a menu with an integrated search bar, akin to having a command palette while still retaining logical grouping of actions.

Wish @libreoffice could have something like it.

Photo of food and tea

Chinese tea discourse in the west, without the food, is like meditation culture in the west: without the faith. I made a scallop chicken congee WITH pipa oolong tea in the broth. Topped it with Teochew (Chaozhou) olive vegetable preserves and, somehow, sour cream and onion dusted chicken chicharrones (that I also made).

All this recent talk of coding things that aren't there yet has got me inspired. I have just decided to see whether I can make head and tail of a simple JSON data structure. It turns out that Radio-Browser is an ideal training tool for beginners as it's a simply laid out dictionary. The result is SurpriseMe.fm, an Apple shortcut that will pick a random station out of the Radio-Browser directory, present you with a dialogue telling you what station you picked, where it is from and in what language as well as give you the tags to provide more context for your pick. Should you decide to go ahead and listen, press the OK button and you will be redirected to Safari where your selected station will hopefully play. Enjoy! icloud.com/shortcuts/7959a9a69…

So, I started writing about PV some months ago because I wanted to talk about the history of my former instance.

I stopped writing it because a funny thing happened when I started diving back into that history. As I was recounting the details, I realized I had a lot of unresolved feelings about what happened. It became increasingly difficult to write about that history, so I decided to take a break.

But I'm going to finish the story. It's at the point where I have to talk about a lot of the nastiness PV's team experienced back then, being one of the first Black-led instances on the fedi, but it's important, so I need to finish it.

But there are still a lot of feelings about what PV was. It was beautiful and terrible, and it made an impression I did not intend.
