One of the biggest security expertise redpills is this is unironically a good idea and the time spent making fun of it was ill-advised for most users whose physical security threat is not a factor in comparison.

This is CrowdStrike admitting they haven't used staggered rollouts or canaries -- techniques to limit outage blast radius, both of which are now well over a decade old. Total ineptitude!

Excuse me we are now living in a time where search engines strike exclusivity deals with websites to exclusively show results of these websites on the one search engine?? Will I need to go with Google to look up reddit posts, Bing to see movie information, and DuckDuckGo for info on ducks now?

I love our post-capitalist cyberpunk dystopia.

@Jessica @404mediaco @Mojeek @privateger That's pretty much what I expected, yes.

Or for them to completely destroy what remains of old.reddit and only have a captcha-intensive basically mobile-only site.

in reply to LisPi

@lispi314 @Jessica @404mediaco @Mojeek @privateger Brave Search (I know…) follows rules for GoogleBot in robots.txt if Brave’s robots.txt entry isn’t explicitly defined. I know it’s not the only engine to do this, but it’s the only one I recall off the top of my head. I imagine that this is the direction more engines are heading in.

Trump claims 62,000 people were at the Butler rally.

Maybe 62,000 would _claim_ to be for street cred, but the only estimate I can find is 20,000, by the county GOP chair.

He said he got 25,000 in the South Bronx. He got 8-10k.

He said one in NJ got 105k. Even Jesse Watters said it was no more than 30k.

Just lies all around.

Just added scan-build to #cairo.

LET'S FUCKING GOOOOOOO

in reply to Federico Mena Quintero

did you figure out a way to get a "nice" report of the issues it finds in gitlab ?
in reply to Edward Hervey

@bilboed If I can get the SCANBUILD env-var thing to work - that the meson manual mentions - (it doesn't work), I should be able to make it put the HTML report in a specific directory, to pick up as an artifact.

Idea:

Fine-tune an LLM on pairs of (function source code, compiled function in assembly) for all the open source projects in C you can find.

This feels like extremely low-hanging fruit, you can generate a sensible dataset to do this with almost no human input.

I wonder how good of a decompiler you could get from something like this.

I've found a wi-fi repeater, wanna use it to get a stronger signal outside. So far, trying to configure it is making my mouth broadcast language that is unrepeatable.

@vick21 The web UI on this thing is so clunky, it's making me remember Native Access version 1 fondly.
in reply to Scott

Yeah, the way Web UIs are being tortured today by developers is outright torturous! LABS Manager from Spitfire comes to mind! I am still in convos with them on Discord and elsewhere. Please let me help you, I say to them… :)

It looks like Ollama folks updated all the llama.3.1 quants over night. I need to redownload 60GB! Good thing my internet traffic is unmetered. lol @vick21 @ZBennoui

There's nothing more infuriating than a program knowing exactly what I want to do, but erroring out and telling me how to do the thing properly instead of just doing the thing.

If you notice you're writing an error message like "you clearly wanted to do X, this is not how you do X, here's what you have to do", perhaps re-think your approach and just do X.

Hello git pushing a new branch to the same remote you cloned the repo from and have used for every single other branch.
in reply to James Scholes

@jscholes There's a config setting for that now.

It feels like some sensible people are working on git now and ironing out the biggest issues, UX-related and otherwise.

Another reason to use ALT text which some people might not have considered: it benefits people who are not visually impaired as well.

As #Mastodon is #decentralized there is no central network hosting all of the images. Should the admin of a server decide to purge old images to save space, users accessing older posts will not know what an image was without an ALT text.

Take this post from 2022 for example.

Why can't all credit cards make life this easy? I misplaced my Capital One card. I locked it and reported it lost on the app. Yes, it was accessible. I got the new card in the mail today. Ow to activate? Touch the card to the back of the phone, and they even provided exact directions of orientation of the card. Quick, painless, and inclusive. I'm here for it!

CrowdStrike is offering its partners a $10 Uber Eats gift card as an apology for crashing millions of computers around the world due to a defective software update.

“To express our gratitude, your next cup of coffee or late night snack is on us!,” says the email from CrowdStrike's chief business officer Daniel Bernard.

But some found that the gift card didn't work, while others got an error message saying the voucher had been canceled.
