Tech of the Ancients

I have this incredible kitchen scale for over 20 years now. It has a swipeable screen and does not need recharging.

You put sth on it, then touch the screen with your finger and swipe right and can measure whatever you put in next.

I do not fully understand the math behind it and how it uses the gravitational fields and atom bonds. But it works reliably and it's always on. Truly magic.

It does not show news and weather, though.💁🏻‍♂️

✏️ New blog post: Views on views (looking for feedback)

In AGWG, the working group that makes WCAG, we have been working on potentially changing what is “web page” today to something like “view”, so that the standard works better in other contexts, like native apps and VR.

I gathered some, ahem, views and added my own, feedback much appreciated!

OK yall, those missing shakes from Sonic have arrived. Version 2025.5 of the bestspeech addon fixes the static problem I mentioned in my last couple of updates. It's recommended to update to this version so you don't get startled by a random burst of white noise when using bestspeech with rate boost, especially if you do not use NVDA with wasapi. github.com/samtupy/b32tts_wrap…

I’ve started writing a fan retelling of Mass Effects 2 and 3. I’m publishing it in a web serial format, to get in the habit of releasing content on a schedule. Here is the prologue: mass-effect-redux.ghost.io/pro…

I put this up last night, and I probably will again next week. I had this crazy idea of a mastodon meet-up, virtually, where we could all order from a restaurant and eat together. If you think this sounds fun, feel free to fill this out, (don't worry, I'm not collecting too much info), and we'll see if we can get something planned! docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAI…

Looking for an #artist on the Fediverse who's accepting #commissions right now.

I need a logo for my FOSS project. The current logo is a placeholder I threw together so I'm looking for anything that's more stylish/creative. Here's the current logo and the only real requirement I have is that the K and the VM stand out since it's supposed to be a play on Linux KVM.

If you're interested please provide a portfolio of previous works you've done (preferably logos, but anything with text in it will do) and a quote if possible.

Payment can be made via PayPal, Ko-Fi, CashApp, or credit card.

Thanks!

Hello everybody. You wanted Sonic? Here is your Sonic, complete with all day breakfast, burgers, chicken and a side for everyone. I'm happy to say that I have successfully implemented rate boost into the Bestspeech NVDA addon as requested! Feel free to grab github.com/samtupy/b32tts_wrap… to try it out. Have fun! Sonic is both the name of the algorithm we're using for rate boost as well as the name of a restaurant I enjoy sometimes, so I couldn't resist the word play haha.

love eating at Sonic! Although the foot-long Coney can give me horrible heartburn, thankfully not experiencing the same with this new fix. :D Huge thanks in getting this done, and while it does muffle consonants slightly, it's really only minor to me and with unvoiced volume at 90 it's good enough to be pleasant. Also love that this had no performance impact, that's superb :D

An overview of reviews made with MapComplete – 2025 edition

Two years ago, I did an analysis on the reviews made with mangrove.reviews – you can find this analysis here.

In this blog, I’ll basically do the same analysis as then, but just with the latest data (as of 28 febr 2025).
Mangrove.reviews client breakdown

Total2175
mangrove.reviews834
mapcomplete.org798
toggenburg.swiss229
thurgau-bodensee.ch70
ostschweiz.ch55
heidiland.com42
wengen.swiss27
open-reviews.net20
winterthur.com15
beta.localtownguide.com11
open-reviews.orderingstack.com13
jungfrauregion.swiss10

As is visible, about one third of all reviews came from mapcomplete, only a fraction less then mangrove.reviews itself.

It is also surprising that there are quite a few swiss websites in there.

Map themes

The most popular themes to create reviews were:

  1. Food: 271 reviews
  2. Shops: 117 reviews
  3. Cafes and pubs: 84
  4. Playgrounds: 53
  5. Pets: 42
  6. Toerisme vlaanderen (commissioned and hidden theme): 30
  7. Cyclofix: 26
  8. Campersite: 23
  9. Fritures: 21
  10. Personal theme: 21

No big surprises here, seems like food is by far the most popular theme to give reviews on.

Language

From the reviews that had a text, the language breakdown is pretty much in line with the changeset-language statistics.

  1. English: 102
  2. Dutch: 42
  3. German: 37
  4. Russian: 14
  5. French: 12

Locations

The MapComplete-reviews are geographically clustered in Europe and the US – not surprisingly where the biggest and well-connected popuplations live.

However, South America and South-East-asia are starting to popup as well.

Flanders is overrepresented in Europe. MapComplete is mainly developed there and had a few projects going on there, so there are more reviews.

Conclusion

The reviews work and there is a slow but stable growth in the number of them. The results are predictable and, dare I say it, downright boring.

It must be said that the reviews have gotten a higher visibility in the MapComplete UI, which definitively helped to get more reviews.
