I have a few apps that are my "must haves" because I use them so much, a couple could be done over Remote Desktop when I need them. I'm going to deeply miss some features but it's time to party like it's the 2008 recession and go back to a Linux or BSD daily driver
God there are so many annoying bugs iOS 26. Please do not update if you like using PleromaFE. It breaks in so many weird ways, like the text input/selection becoming completely disconnected from reality. Your cursor will be many lines below the actual text and you have to sacrifice a virgin to then be able to select the text you want for editing

@mischievoustomato @RustyCrab yes, and I can still run Linux-only apps through various means. The FrameWork people are actively helping close the FreeBSD hardware support gap and I could pick up a slightly older IBM/Lenovo where essentially everything works out of the box. This will be the year I buy a bunch of non-Apple hardware for something other than server use.
My brother is also pressuring me to build a real gaming PC too and I love bonding with him and I can afford it, so I think I'll just do it
@RustyCrab good to hear. I use a simple intel alder lake laptop. I haven't tried freebsd in ages, but I don't do it since I use gnome and I do too many things and many I don't think I could do on fbsd
@mischievoustomato @RustyCrab unless it's specific hardware related functionality, it probably all works fine. Very few things really need the Linux kernel.
Also it's worth nothing the added a fully compatible inotify implementation in FreeBSD 15 so software that doesn't know kqueue or Linuxulator apps that need it will just work. The 15.0 release is gonna be great

I had the absolute WORST coffee this morning: Summer Moon cafe, a chain that looks inviting and kinda third-wave
Brewed coffee: terrible. Their shtick is oak-roaated coffee. Tastes like campfire ashes mixed with Folger's
Lattes: their thing is "moon milk" in all their lattes which is this blend of sweet cream, whole milk, sugar syrup, and whatever else (maybe cereal milk like flavor?). I had the weakest option which was only 1/4 moon milk, 3/4 skim for the latte. It was so sweet I wanted to puke. And some people actually order a "full moon"???
Disgusting trash that should come with health warnings.

This week I learned that September 26th is the most popular of all birthdays during the year, probably because it's about 40 weeks from roughly the week between xmas and new years, which explains why half of everyone I know seemed to be born this week.

I think if all those companies producing and designing phones spent as much time worrying about audio as they do about cameras and video, we would have a 32-bit float recording by now, and perhaps a few more cool audio bits! :)
The way at least iPhones work now, there isn't really an advantage to 32-bit FP. The microphone volume is fixed at 30% with idiot-proof multi-band processing to make up the difference, which can be bypassed, but only in mono.

Project I'm vaguely thinking of building: getthing. A GUI where you paste a URL, and it sends the link to yt-dlp, or fanficfare, or ARIA2c, or spotdl, or streamlink, based on the website and what supports it, and then just saves the thing. Because I often have things I want, and I don't like thinking about what app to use. Also, I have a nest of scripts to keep it all working: the update thing that updates yt-dlp and ffmpeg and deno, the other different update thing that updates fanficfare, the thing that uses rookie to get the auth cookies from my browser, the thing that bypasses cloudflare, the other thing that bypasses cloudflare when the first thing doesn't, the thing that keeps the user-agent up to date for all the different other things so they are impersonating the latest version of a browser, etc. Someone should really just put this all into a package that will just save stuff to your hard drive in the "correct format"(tm) that you probably wanted based on what it is.
I would use this immediately mate, immediacy abounds for a product like that. Not get it done immediately but as in, with out hesitation I would use the mess out of it.
@dodecahedron Hmmm. The main thing is getting the list of supported domains for each tool. I don't wanna update the GUI every time a tool updates, and I want the GUI to keep the tools it uses up to date, so I'm gonna have to parse the command output where it lists supported websites. That's really the big job that I don't already have code for.
@jackwilliambell I'm not sure there are many RSS feeds of fanfics, spotify songs, large files, etc. And as for YouTube, yt-dlp has better ways of doing that using the propper API's. There are also already several bridges that can turn any YouTube channel into a podcast.

It was a bit of a rush driving back to Winnipeg, but I fondly remember my short time in the Quad Cities.

@drewdaniels I have been to that museum!! I think they did a great job based on my own experience growing up right near the Mississippi River in southwest Wisconsin. I believe schools in the area take field trips to it as well
It's crazy to see all those historic buildings downtown by the riverfront that used to be a massive manufacturing district but are now mostly derilict. The only thing keeping that area alive seems to be the casinos 😭
oh, and I had family in Little Chicago (Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan). Some of the stories of Capone’s empire were horrid. “Don’t go near the rail yard, or the tunnel people will get you” wasn’t a fairy tail. If you’re into that history, they have a spa, and tours of the tunnels that had live action re-enactments.
I gather you're not having the same problems with the Intel Ethernet and sshd on Kubuntu. I wonder if you'd have those same problems on stock Arch, since KDE Linux says it's created using Arch packages.
@matt That is correct, it seems to work fine. TBH though my entire goal here was to have a "vanilla" KDE + Plasma install as a reference so that I could deduce when my FreeBSD + KDE Plasma desktop was malfunctioning. (treating the Linux version as 'known good') so don't expect to exercise the Linux version particularly heavily.
So am I the last person on earth to learn that windows+up arrow maximizes a window? Kind of means that I don't really need alt+space for anything anymore.
In Windows 11, this doesn't work unless you turn off... What's it called... Window snapping? I think? There's a feature that takes over win-up and win-down, and it annoys me. Turning the feature off restores the wonderful maximize and minimize shortcut keys.

You don't need some fair trial, face your accusers, innocent until proven guilty, beyond a shadow of a doubt to decide you don't want someone to be around anymore. On a personal, or community, or organization level, you can just kick toxic people out for any reason whatsoever.
They're dropping fash dog whistles. They make women uncomfortable to be around and show misogyny. They make racist jokes, or are unusually critical of minorities. They act as narcissistic shitheads. They create unnecessary amounts of drama and try and split the community if they don't get their way. They suggest doing unethical things.
It doesn't matter. You can at MINIMUM kick them out of leadership positions and speaking spots at conferences. And if it still continues, ban them from the community entirely. There's no court of law requirements to ban people who make your space worse.

We learned on actual typewriters (the electric kind, thankfully, not the always-jamming old-school mechanical ones).
Because the deck of the typewriters were very high off the desk, my physical therapist very kindly made me a wrist rest out of wood so that I could rest my wrists on it while typing in class. It was very very first device of its kind I had seen, now they're everywhere ;)
I kinda wish I had an electric typewriter now, honestly. Something beautifully minimalistic about those.
One thing I did when the writing minimalism bug bit me was create a simple shell script that let you create a text file one line at a time, but whenever you hit return, that line was written out to the file (appended), and couldn't e edited again. So you just kind of kept writing and didn't worry about editing too much. :D
