#golang is undoubtedly my favorite programming language. It's fast, elegant, while it has a KISS approach with a very minimalistic syntax and lots of other things that should be the standard in 2025. As a scripting language, when less power is enough, Lua is definitely great for when all you want to do is design, rather than worry about low level things.
Then #Odin came along, still very young and very basic when it comes to available libraries and tools, but the language keeps many things that are great about Go, adds manual memory management so it's great as a systems language, as well as makes C interop more seamless.
Without these languages existing today, coding would be very bleak indeed, having to put up with a lot of things that should not be a requirement if you want to just write code. Just to mention a few: bloated build systems, declarations, header files, needlessly complex syntax, spending hours on writing wrappers and documentation, and setting up cross-compiler toolchains.
Why is this important? Because when you code, your brain is in problem solving mode. You focus on the design, the mechanics. While you do that, other parts of your brain have to deal with creating build XMLs, focusing on the syntax (how best would it be to implement this based on what you have). If you use a language which is not constrained, the cognitive load increases and you could spend more time working on something even if it's not obvious why.
Now the question is, am I a better Go programmer because of Odin? My answer is yes. I get everything I wanted from C in a very simple and elegant way. For constrained, very low level things where memory management is crucial, Odin works perfectly. If this is less important, Go is great. I don't need anything else except scripting, for even faster design, e.g. when writing a game specifically. That's my current stance in 2025, but I'm very curious to see if this will ever change. Because I think I found the best approach that works for me.

Hey there! Thanks for reaching out. If you switch to Revolutionary, you can have a custom signature but for now it's still not possible to add separate signatures for each email address. When checking the upgrade plans have you gone to Settings > Plan. From there you can change your payment interval to monthly, and then click to change plan. It will then let you choose monthly or yearly. Apologies for this confusion, we have let our team know of this.
Over the last few days I put some effort into getting SayTheSpire under active development again. After digging myself head-deep into the source code I finally managed to get basic Downfall support running again. You'll have to run the Downfall official beta version though, as the official release doesn't support controller andkeyboard input when selecting the starting room. @patricus Don't think so, it has been under development for quite a few years by now. Maybe Java 17 if we're lucky, but more like Java 11 if I had to guess. Anyway, at the time of writing this my favourite language is Rust. Its just the language I spent the most time with recently, and its so easy to write complex applications that need to utilize multiple CPU cores. Kinda opens the door to some really cool stuff.
one reason the Bootstrap design framework is so good is because it was built with the most basic accessibility from the get go. as far as i remember (when it was called Twitter Bootstrap), it was meant to work for nerds with poor vision ―most specifically asthigmatism― looking into tiny screens.

Happy with Windows 10 again, turns out, 19045 LTSC can still get all the updates, even with that unofficial patcher that rolled it from 21H2 to 22H2.(github.com/teknixstuff/misc-fi…) since I was able to get rid of that annoying "Your version of Windows is Out of support" banner in Windows update. MAS updated their FAQ, stating that you had to have the domain settings-win.data.microsoft.com unblocked. Once I made sure it is, all of my Win10 machines got rid of that message. Even those that ran this patch. This is making me feel hopeful that yes, even 19045 enterprise IoT LTSC branch will get them. Now I'm less hopeless about Windows 10, not Windows overall, but it's (win10) a dead OS walking over time, as they say. At the very least though, 2023 and 2024 era computers that can run Windows 10 (2025 will struggle in some cases like with AMD) can stay secure and updated. That's a huge relief.

Oh and don't be going like "get Windows 11 and be happy!" cause no. I tried that again today too. It uses clearly 300 MB more ram at idle. It also has more leaks than under my old apartment sink. Seriously. RAM will jump from 2.1 GB to 2.4 GB used, then down to 2.3 GB, then up to 2.7 GB. Processes will go from about 70 all the way to 80, 90 or more. No way to live. That OS quality has gone down the tubes after build 22000. 26100 is that bad, yes. I don't expect future Windows builds to improve this if Mico and AI orchestration is coming. Be prepared for 150 processes in Windows soon.
My suggestion, with tongue firmly in cheek, is to get windows 11, 64 GB of RAM or more, the fastest processor you can, and expect a fairly slow and buggy machine. Also, forget about privacy and stability. Happiness is optional. The only stability blind people can have is the Windows stability, tagline "your audio probably won't break but, of course, no guarantees". Frankly, I have no issue with Linux being flaky, all software is flaky, my difficulty is that I can't easily recover when audio or braille falls over. With win11, that happens only a few times a year, if that, but you have to give up a huge amount for it.
there should be a linux distro named, flakey flower. seriously. linux is such a shithead. argh. so mad at linux tonight for being a flakey flower, you change one config file, you have one package mismatch. today for example, I was wondering why humanware hid didn't work. well turns out, I needed bluez 5.84. bluez 5.82 had some issues with privacy key generation and usage that made the hid connection flap. oh but then there's pipewire, and 1.49 adds a new weird bug where if it needs to change audio rate, it will just disconnect all audio. great. linux, you're the flakey flower of my life.
what distro is that? and I would report that to pipewire, if that's the newest version. That's why I recommend arch based or fedora based stuff, we need the latest versions of stuff like that, otherwise we're gonna get weird bugs which might be normal for sighted people, but are dealbreaking for us. I see 1.4.9 is the most recent version on arch indeed, so I can potentially reproduce the bug. What do you do to make the issue happen?
so I'm on Debian 13.1. With some Trixie-backport bits (Orca) and Forky for ATSPI and latest Intel audio drivers. With 1.49.0, as opposed to the 47.x builds, there's a huge Bluetooth regression happening. Specifically, if the audio channel gets closed for the A2DP source, it cannot be reopened reliably with both my Bose and Sonos - I need to power off the headphones and back on, then it re-latches for a second enough to get audio and do something. Until I open a steady stream of audio, like with a game under Wine, or an audio file. My solution was to downgrade pipewire. Bluez 5.84 is fine to keep with it, which is good. Under 1.47 pipewire, usually I'll see a channel or audio change when LightDM switches into my user sesh, but the most this will do is switch me to low-quality HSP mode, so then it's still annoying but way less so.
hmm, that's interesting. I heard similar stuff happen with debian, but that was because debian shipped old software, and if you combined that with newer packages from backports, stuff can break from time to time. Interesting bugs those, however
@esoteric_programmer yeah, I try to keep packages minimal, only if something already is broken or too old, so I pin forky / Backports to the bottom with Apt so nothing gets pulled unless I ask for it. That way I could avoid getting nothing more than Orca / Itel audio and the ATspi bits, life's good. Until some random package breaks audio. 1.47 is still in backports, then I think 1.49 is Forky. 1.42 is still what the standard 13 distro ships with and maintains. I'm glad I grabbed Bluez latest though, in that way it paid off since HID with BRLTTY suddenly started to work after it updated. In that way it can be a mixed bag, sometimes you end up squashing a bug on accident and then retracing why it fixed if you're the curious type like me xD
oh not since like 2013. I remember it was a lot, shit ton, of conf file editing on it. Which I didn't quite like, and package management will always be my favorite from Debian. Pacman can be a mess if a rolling release update breaks something in an unexpected way and it's harder to retrace. In that way I do like Fidora's a little better, felt more beginner-friendly. Pacman's for the power user wanting to eat those coins and get powerups from packages, ha. Still, I know Stormux is built with Arch, so if there's a good entry point already configured for me on many fronts, that would be most likely what I'd try for a spin.
yeah so like, now you have an installer which more or less works, after connecting to the network, archinstall can do the rest, it's not that hard anymore. The stability of updates also improved significantly, I haven't had issues in a very very long time
I think, the good thing is that all my homegrown systemD scripts could probably port over OK, now it would be just combing through the filesystem and grabbing them (things like, a script that migrates my Bluetooth pairing keys from Windows to Linux, sets up CPU governors for a balanced power profile, ETC.) I also liked how I had espeakup baked into my kernel with modprobe modules and the initramfs changes that always forced it back in there when the kernel changed. Ugh. All that, lost. xD Debian does configure espeakup for you nicely after install along with Orca, once they know you've enabled them, it really felt like magic.
@esoteric_programmer that is good! I know they tend to get more of the bleeding edge versions, at least Debian could get 6.16 so it's not older like 6.12 from before. I'll have to do some research and get the motivation for installing. It's a bit tricky with drivers for me also as I like to move the external Linux SSD to 2 other laptops, both of which need the Intel SOF stuff, and then this main desktop is on AMD, so in the end I install both driver sets and right now it's fairly effortless to just move it and boom.
I installed Arch before arch-install existed, and it wasn't difficult - surprisingly smooth, as I recall. It's an excellent way to maintain an up to date system, including the accessibility-related packages.

Luna has been passing around screenshots where an unidentified FDo CoC team member discusses banning me with her, and states that they have "a plan" [to deal with me].
I'm at my wit's end here. I have no idea how it's come to this. I feel like nobody in the Linux graphics/desktop community stood up for me as Luna manipulated and brainwashed people one by one. I will be removing myself from all FDo spaces entirely, including no longer contributing to any FDo-managed projects in any way.
I *did* contact a CoC member about this recently. And she refused to answer any questions or clarify anything. And now they're acting like "we can all just get along".
Luna is an abuser, and I will not be engaging with nor interacting with FDo while they support her, which includes financial sponsorship by a literal CoC member. CoC members are saying one thing to me and then supporting Luna in private, as well as saying they believe her false accusations to others.

Yeah. I checked. DKIM pass from lists.freedesktop.org. They used an anonymous CoC sender list as From: this time (previously when CoC emailed me it was individuals, but I guess they're going for "CoC as a whole" now).
Why do CoC members usually seem to add to troubles... People are just people, and is fine that they're not perfect at all. I think CoC exists to steer people towards a unified goal peacefully, no matter gender, race, or stuff, and cooperate for that goal. But it's increasingly going opposite😇 Maybe should fight for rights in CoC, or else others would take 'em. Politics that is.😅
CoC is fine as a concept... the issue here seems to be that, as far as I can tell, FDo CoC is all volunteers with no formal training or qualifications other than "seem to be good members of the community that someone else trusts". That works for the easy CoC cases... but not the hard ones.

I can’t speak for fd.o, but I was in a leadership position on another project where we got a similar case disastrously wrong, so I might be able to illuminate how that happens.
The first mistake we made was not to differentiate harassment from conflict resolution. Most of the issues we had between contributors were personality clashes or technical disagreements that escalated. As you say, most of these have both parties acting in good faith. The main thing that the project needs to do is deescalate and get the people involved to talk again. This is absolutely the wrong approach in cases of harassment. There were two key causes of this:
First, (as you mentioned) no one involved had any formal (or, in most cases, informal) training in how to deal with harassment. Most employers offer this, but it’s rarely compulsory. After the initial incident, I signed up for this training with my employer (as did another colleague involved with the same project). This highlighted some of the things we did wrong, but it was quite illuminating who was there: we were the only men on the course who were there voluntarily. Most of the people were women who were there because they had been targets of harassment or bullying and wanted to understand the processes better. The rest were men who had been forced to take the training because they had been accused of harassment (and, from a lot of their comments, I suspect had been engaged in it long term).
Most F/OSS (or other community-led) projects don’t have any formal structure for providing this kind of training. And the work-provided training wasn’t sufficient. There were a bunch of ‘and this is where you need to escalate it to HR specialists (or the police)’ moments, but volunteer projects don’t have those experts. One of the biggest things a F/OSS charity could do to improve the situation would be to hire real experts that projects can use as consultants. Companies that back projects could help out be loaning HR as well as engineers to the projects.
Second, we had very poor visibility into what happened. There’s a natural tendency for humans to trust the first person who explains a situation. In our case, it was made worse because the only thing that happened on project infrastructure (and so the thing that we saw) was an IRC exchange where one project member connected and had a go at another member then left. We didn’t see the backstory, which involved a load of gamergate nonsense on Twitter and elsewhere (and those of us not in the Twitterverse had only a very vague idea of what Gamergate was. I thought it was a handful of people who were upset some game they didn’t like won an award, I had no idea that it was a coordinated harassment campaign). When a lot of the things that happened are private messages, or in non-project spaces, it’s hard to know what the real context is. We saw a load of things quoted out of context that made both people look bad. We also had friends of both people jumping in and defending them and attacking the other.
It really takes weeks of investigation to properly handle this kind of thing and dig to the truth. And this compounds the problem of the people dealing with it not having the right training. And, unless they are employees of a foundation backing the project, they also lack the time to do a good job. And, again, the assumption that people are basically decent (which is normally valid) hurts when one of the people is not and is actively trying to subvert the process. The evidence from an honest person reporting what happened and a dishonest person cherry-picking out-of-context comments will look very similar. Unless you personally know the people involved (which brings its own problems of bias) then it’s very hard to work out who is telling the truth. This is even harder when one or both people involved are highly visible in the community, because they will both be publicly sharing a narrative and one is mostly accurate (but only mostly: no one is 100% objective when they’re being personally attacked) while the other is a carefully crafted fabrication, but there’s pressure to respond quickly because both are public and the community is full of people who believe either one and are complaining.
In the last few years, the problem has become worse. A lot of CoC complaints now are malicious. Far-right folks absolutely love baiting people into saying things that look bad when quoted out of context, then deleting the context and reporting the remark. They make a game out of trying to get people kicked out of projects. So the workload has gone up, which compounds the other problems.
I wish I had a good answer for how to improve this.
So, hypothetically, if I found out that a vulnerability in a voicemail system which allowed anyone to access anyone else's voicemails without warning or authentication hadn't been fixed over the past 11 years, and the company had been adequately warned about it multiple times, who would I talk to? #security #voip
The public. Send them a last, courtesy email, inform them that a blog post with your findings will be published 90 days from now as per standard cybersecurity industry practice, and then follow through if they don't fix it (and even if they do).
If this is a telco (which it presumably is), you may have luck with your local regulation, but you'd need to talk to canadian cybersec / telecom experts about it specifically, and I doubt any will randomly pop up here without seeking them specifically.
I don't think I'm meant to self-host. I still can't reset my RB5009, which I got, in part, specifically to let family members VPN in and take advantage of self-hosted services. My local DNS server works, but I can't get to local subdomains, despite having an A and Cname record. Because of this, reliable access to the NAS isn't there, so no one in the house uses it. I've tried off and on for years to do homelab/self-hosted stuff, and it almost never works how I want.
On the DNS issue, is it possible that clients aren't being instructed to use the correct local DNS server? That needs to be set up explicitly in DHCP for IPV4 and RA for IPV6.
@jcsteh As far as I can tell, that part works. DNS is set to the gateway's IP, meaning that clients should be using the router's DNS servers. On the router, those are set to my local server (primary), and 1.1.1.1 (secondary).
