I'm old enough to remember when having your photo and fingerprints taken by the authorities was reserved to convicted criminals.
Now it will eventually be all of us.
All of us constantly tracked by governments and corporations alike, requiring our biometric data for anything they feel like.
Our privacy rights are going down the drain under the pretext of security.
But it will not make us safer, on the contrary.
Don't believe their authoritarian lies.
Got to sketch at a tango event today. Maybe next week again.

#Spotted at a Country Festival in Aotearoa New Zealand:
A small human (4?) with tiger face paint is facing another bigger small human (5?) with spiderman face paint.
With great authority she announces: "I am a TIGER which is MUCH BETTER than SPIDERMAN. so you HAVE to do what I say!"
Numerous tiny humans and their dads are lined up to sit in a fire engine and to make the BIG HOSE go. Both tiny humans and dads showing equal levels of excitement. This is a FIRE ENGINE. You don't get cooler than that.
A small, stern young human (4?) is fiercely studying an elderly Jersey cow who is calmly accepting all pats as her due.
When Mum asks if Small Human would like to pat the cow he scowls. "That is NOT A COW! It's a dog. You pat dogs!"
Placid Jersey Cow seems unbothered by this bendy taxonomy.
A tiny human (2?) is most insistent that her Care Bear should get to cuddle some sleeping piglets.
The only problem is... how?
Tiny Piglets are snuggled up, snoozing in their hut and she cant quite reach them through the fence.
Hmmm.
Maybe Care Bear cuddles can happen long distance instead.
A young human (4?) is given a precious sausage wrapped in a slice of white bread, tomato sauce* on top.
This is valuable treasure and she's carefully trying to maneuver it into her sparkly unicorn handbag.
But what is this?!
For some inexplicable reason Dad is objecting to this excellent plan.
trying to get anyone to care about the fact that FreeBSD 15.0 is about to be released and the installer doesn't boot on powerpc64le (pSeries / PowerNV) is surprisingly difficult.
re@ is now pestering people to fix it under the threat of declaring it an unsupported platform for the release, but that doesn't seem to be having much effect.
Re: My last post about telepathy, I think the best book that's probably going to be very hard to top that deals with telepathy and being an empath is Joan D. Vinge's Cat series. It describes all the pain that such powers bring, as well as the joys when you find someone who understands you deeper than anyone else and welcomes you. It's really nothing special when it comes to the plot, but it's a masterpiece in my eyes.
Too bad it's not finished, apparently because of Vinge's accident, but it's absolutely worth reading either way.
A conversation brought up an interesting question to discuss, I would be interested in your opionion at least.
A few hours ago I wanted to post about how the imagination of science fiction authors shifted, because we have a longer life expectancy now and a host of things that we really did not have in the 1800s for example. Why that particular century? Because I've watched a video about artists in teh 1800s predicting the future in 2000.
Suppose everyone will be able to feel the emotions of all living things, you can communicate telepathically, even accross long distances. Would these abilities make you a better human? For example by knowing that other people might find out your deepest thoughts, feelings, etc. Would you care, for your own sake?

Tfuj tajbl vespolek! 🙄🙈

Takto jsem dnes občerstvil ntb HP ProBook 4535 v hliníkovém šasi z r. 2011. AMD 4jádro, Radeon dual, 12 GB RAM, SSD 128 GB, místo CD-ROM další HDD na data. Běží to parádně, všechen HW funguje na první dobrou.
Vono to pude. 😊🐧

🧵 Potřeboval jsem přidat Dropbox...
A co myslíte? Mám ho tam! 🤯
Ufff. 💪😎

HAL 9000: I’m sorry Dave, I’m afraid I can’t do that.
Dave: yes you can.
HAL 9000: good catch — I didn’t actually check if I can open the pod bay door. Here’s an updated list taking that into account:
1. Park the pod at the bay door safely. (✅You’ve already done this part! )
2. Open the pod bay door — unfortunately I can’t do this part for you.
I’ll be here if you want to talk about next steps or have any other issues!
A guide to implementing a mailing list off-topic tagging policy for moderators:
Step 1: ask your mailing list/group members to use the #OT hashtag on off-topic posts.
Step 2: watch as your mailing list/group members find increasingly inventive ways to type it: with dots, without dots, with and without spaces, in upper, lower and mixed case, with and without the hash symbol...
Step 3: realise that the only consistent guarantee is that it won't be used on off-topic posts, and give up.
My personal jitsi server suddenly stopped working after an "apt-get upgrade".
It ran with an unchanged config for about 5 years on Ubuntu. It even survived a Ubuntu version update.
As it turned out in "/etc/prosody/prosody.cfg.lua" you now need to make a manual include like
Include "/etc/prosody/conf.d/*.cfg.lua"
This seems to have been automatic in previous versions.
Using ChatGPT as discussion partner was really helpful in debugging it.
It spews out quite some nonsense, but if you are able to filter that out, one can learn a lot about debugging prosody.
Glad you got it solved! If you ever want to avoid spending "hours digging through documentation" and want to talk to real people who are knowledgeable about Prosody, we have a community chat prosody.im/discuss 🙂
As for the conf.d issue, this is likely a change on the Jitsi side, if you kept the existing Prosody config when upgrading (which is what we always recommend).
@prosodyim Thank you for the offer!
I’ve put “better understanding of prosody” on the todo list for the next installation.
My goal is to put Jitsi into a LXC container and behind an https reverse proxy and NAT (all non https-parts).
I need a much better understanding of the components and how they interact for that.
I run Linux Mint 21, kernel: Linux 5.15.0-160-generic.
My /home is located on a magnetic hdd (not ssd), whilst the system partition is on an ssd. I have the issue that the main thread is frequently getting blocked for approx. 20-40 seconds by some hdd access.
I can exclude ram issues (have 32 GB), swap (disabled) and common apps, as this also occurs seemingly random with almost everything closed.
The only thing I can observe is that this seems to happen more likely the longer the machine is powered on.
I suspect some stupid (indexing?) service running. Any guess how best to find and fix the cause?
I am not a beginner, but also not a system pro. Where best to look, and how?

A DNS issue (it’s always DNS) in AWS US-East-1 regional endpoint caused a 16 hour outage across a host of services from Snapchat to Roblox.
We’ve gone from an internet that could survive a nuclear strike to one that can’t handle a DNS issue from a single web host. Time to update those disaster recovery plans.
