@jfayre Indeed; in a way it's quite a strange format. But I grew up watching it and having parts explained, so it works really well for me personally. I have all Blackadder episodes as a single audiobook too.
@sclower I haven't listened yet. But based on a scan of the first episode, and my experience with similar audiobooks of Blackadder and similar series, they do not.
@sclower The preview doesn't show anything either, and ironically they picked the episode Holoship which starts with the crew watching a movie. The BBC did this in a really cool way with Faulty Towers where they had one of the characters occasionally interject with descriptive commentary while staying in-character. Could have been fun to see how something like that could have worked with red dwarf

@phnt yeah but you end up with software and even glibc changes that people target that won't work on the LTS distro, so people will literally hold back glibc improvements for 15 years because of the fear that their software won't work on LTS distro unless they build a custom version and they sure as hell won't do that
I don't think glibc maintainers care about compatibility considering their constant ABI breakage. New features? Maybe. But as I've said, this might stop some developers from trying out the new shiny things which I consider a good thing. Or if they want to use it, hide it behind #ifdef and supply an alternative. What this does isn't hold back improvement, it forces writing portable code again which everybody forgot in the last 5-10 years. And I'm getting tired of having to package some random new library from a year ago whose version must be from the last 3 months and the Python version must be _latest_ for a piece of software to even consider building itself. Examples: HomeAssistant, Gitea and much more.
This is also mostly a non-issue for open source software where you can always patch it to work on older libc, or make multiple packages if you are the developer. The developer might not want to do it, but maybe the distro maintainers want to which is also fine. And pre-built binaries without source will always suffer since glibc ABI compatibility barely exists.
@phnt generally I find this kind of problem significantly less of an issue in FreeBSD world which I'm grateful for.
If you compile something for FreeBSD 12, I don't care. I can run it on FreeBSD 15 after installing compat12x or I can just fire up a FreeBSD 12 jail. It will still work. The kernel is always backwards compatible, you just need the old libs

Finally, NVAccess has agreed to separate links from the adjacent non-link text and display them on separate lines as a toggleable option. It’s still unclear when this will be implemented, but it's a good step forward in my opinion. I opened this issue in April 2020, and many users really want it. over 5 years later and it still isn't added? Unacceptable! They have an oppertunity to get more users but only if they add the ability to customize it like you can Jaws. These could be "user options" This means if people don't want the option they don't have to turn it on.
@Dennislong82 With all respect, complaining will get us nowhere. Yes this should have been implemented earlier, and yes I don't know if this will be done soon. But such is the status of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver on the Mac. Personally I'm not willing to even touch VoiceOver on the Mac given its horrible issues and limitations. If you feel Apple will deliver something more efficient compared with NVDA and JAWS - something which they have consistently failed to provide, go for it. @NVAccess
@Dennislong82 I agree on this, working directly on the issues, debating constructively which should happen with what kind of priorities, bringing up feature request to ad-on authors if the core hesitates, learning to write our own code is a better anger channeling rather than making statements that go nowhere. The complexity underlying open source software is beyond explanation, this is not a hobbiest project that can make everything a reality for sure.
@Dennislong82 the project is too large, too complex and too much is happening around it. You can get overwhelm quicly if you look at the issues filed daily. Adding to that, donations, priorities, availability of people to code with their own experience and ability make this a more complex endeavor. The least that we can do is learn how this project work and happen in day to day bases.
@Dennislong82 I can understand the need to equalise jaws and nvda and what so ever, the easier route is at least in my opinion, is through ad-ons. We can either approach multipurpose addons like tony enhancements or browser nav to suggest features and contribute code.
@Dennislong82 when making blank statements like NVDA doesn't care or people are not responding, we are just taking for granted how much presence of mind the org have in the social media, responding to criticism and interacting with the users. You don't get that level of engagements from many other Assistive Tech or mainstream companies.
@Dennislong82 the question should be, how can I bring the change or be the change that I want to see? that will propell us forward, towards what we want? making other people responsible for what we aspire can be a start, but when we stuckk at it, it's a drug that destroys our compassion.
@Dennislong82 one thing that is less discussed here sadly is the philosophy behind jaws and NVDA. jaws wants to be more than a screen reader, it appears to solve even access issues, that needed to be solvedd by the software /website coders. NvDA underlying philosophy since its inception, at least from what I know is very different. Why we want things to be same for every screen reader? it don't have to be same to win the users.
@Dennislong82 The philosophy for Jaws definitely works for its commercial appeal. Nvda, on the other hand, has not been vocal about their financial or man power difficulty, has they? do we really know what it takes to run or develop opensource software this big or are we too occupied with our own smaller worldview. There has been many commercial #screenReaders but till now, only one #openSource screen reader? why is that? #nvdasr

you are 6 years late :) We already invited the Thunderbird core team for two days of discussing joint futures in 2019. For several reasons (pandemic disruption among them) they didn't follow up much. Maybe they also believed, like many others, that instant messaging via email can not work? In any case, they recently integrated a Matrix client, but TB's chat interface remains very bare bone. Should they revise their approach, we'd be happy to collaborate.

If any Jaws home users were wondering if they're missing out on AI Web page summaries, from my testing, the answer is no. These summaries are pretty good if you are a beginner, they give you an overview of important links, how to navigate the page, remind about potentially useful shortcuts, and so on. From my testing on several large forum topics, these summaries do not summarize the text content itself, They just briefly mention what it is about.
A worrying number of influential people seem to have forgotten how bubbles work. When the bubble starts to burst it won’t first manifest in Nvidia’s results, but in smaller loss-making AI start-ups struggling to secure the investor funding they need to keep operating. This will slowly propagate to larger loss-making AI companies, and the collapse will be well underway by the time it shows up in Nvidia’s results.

Which captcha service would you recommend and why?
The captcha needs to have an accessibility component or an alternative option for solving, and needs to be simple to integrate.
I've been using reCaptcha on my sites for years, but may switch to Turnstile from Cloudflare as I believe there are changes coming to reCaptcha that I'm not sure I like.
@jscholes Adding to the Turnstyle love, it's the best in the world at what it does. Altcha's documentation confuses me, I'm not certain what i'm supposed to or not supposed to purchase.
@nick As I understand it, the core ALTCHA product is free and open source and provides basic verification based on proof of work. Sentinel is a paid offering that extends it with IP reputation checks, automatic challenge difficulty adjustment, rate limiting, spam detection, and the like. @lerven

And with the basic Altcha, they provide server-side libraries for various languages; there doesn't seem to be a separate server process to run, just a library to use in your own server. I'm looking into switching from Turnstile in light of the Cloudflare outage.
Depends on whether you're trying to protect against script kiddies or serious actors, interested in your website specifically. If the former, literally anything is going to work, including "what is 2+2" or "spell dog backwards." If the latter, use the big three, reCaptcha (no longer free), hCaptcha or Turnstile. Each of these has their own accessibility implications.
I’ve been using reCAPTCHA for years. It's straightforward to integrate and easy for users to solve. Plus, it offers solid accessibility support. That said, the audio CAPTCHA can be challenging for visually impaired users who also have hearing difficulties. In those cases, hCaptcha might be a better option, as it offers an accessibility cookie to bypass challenges. However, to be honest, I’ve found that feature to be a bit unreliable.
I've been a GoldWave user since 2015. I had been using Sound Forge before that, but when it became unreliable, in my opinion anyway, I felt it was time to use something else. I highly recommend GoldWave as it doesn't take up lots of system resources and is very accessible.
@kjsapergia I've been using goldwave for donkeys years now. I find it much easy to work compared to Sound Forge, though older versions of Sound Forge are pretty good accessability wize. the 1 thing gold wave lacks however is that the effects you can apply are limited compared to what you have in sound forge.
@JamminJerry REAPER is awesome! I'm amazed at how a small program, in terms of file size, can do so much. I use it for all my multitrack needs. It can be daunting at the start, but once I asked the right questions and got the answers I needed, I've never looked back, though I still use other audio editors as well including GoldWave and Studio Recorder, though those are single-track editors.
I personally think it's the best destructive sound editor out there without going all DAW. Especially since it can now work with VST plugins in a limited but still useful kind of way.
@daygar I still use it for particular jobs, some even involving heavy precision, as I can't get reaper's transport to be that kind of precise. For a single-track, destructive editor, it's pretty good, although some of its built-in effects are a complete write-off, like the EQ and reverb.
If the EQ hasn't changed since I last used it more than 25 years ago, it adds this odd plastic texture to everything, no matter how little you turn even a single band up or down. I really hate that sound.
@BorrisInABox @x0 To be honest I always found that more with ReaEQ than GoldWave's. Especially if the band is narrow, say less than 1. Having said that, I spent 20+ years (including my music tech education) with GW before I started using Reaper so maybe I just don't know how EQs are really meant to sound.
Nah. ReaEQ doesn't do that. If your band is extremely narrow, you can get ringing or weird nulling, maybe a peak an octave above the cut-off if you're messing with high pass filters, but that's not the same thing. Any EQ will do that to a greater or lesser extent.
I don't have any examples anymore, but when I first heard it in 1998 or so, my thought was that not all the frequencies are aligned in time. It's like some of them are just a tiny bit offset from others. It's weird, anyway.
@BorrisInABox @daygar It always reminded me of a particularly aggressive version of what I always considered the sound of an iPhone recording. If, on an old iPhone that could only record in mono, you played something on the speaker and recaptured it with the same microphone, it might sound a bit like that. GoldWave's parametric EQ, though, is fine.
In and around 2023, Roy and Rianne Schestowitz were subject to a horrific campaign of online harassment. Unfortunately they blamed me for it, and in turn wrote and published an astonishing array of articles making false accusations against me. Last year, I sued them in the high court in London. In turn, they countersued me for harassment. The case was heard last month and I'm pleased to say that the counterclaim was dismissed and I prevailed in my case. The court awarded me £70,000 in damages.
