Beyond #Qatargate: the EU needs a compulsory register that targets all covert lobbying

Instead of a misguided 'foreign agents' law that will negatively target NGOs, the EU needs a robust compulsory transparency register that targets all covert #lobbying

"It is strange and striking that climate change activists have not committed any acts of terrorism. After all, terrorism is for the individual by far the modern world’s most effective form of political action, and climate change is an issue about which people feel just as strongly about as, say, animal rights. This is especially noticeable when you bear in mind the ease of things like blowing up petrol stations, or vandalising SUVs. In cities, SUVs are loathed by everyone except the people who drive them; and in a city the size of London, a few dozen people could in a short space of time make the ownership of these cars effectively impossible, just by running keys down the side of them, at a cost to the owner of several thousand pounds a time. Say fifty people vandalizing four cars each and every night for a month: six thousand trashed SUVs in a month and [they] would soon be disappearing from our streets. So why don’t these things happen? Is it because the people who feel strongly about climate change are simply too nice, too educated, to do anything of the sort? (But terrorists are often highly educated.) Or is it that even the people who feel most strongly about climate change, on some level, can’t quite bring themselves to believe in it?"

The King’s Coronation is to be broadcast with live accessible commentary and audio description. This type of accessible commentary is different to audio description. Whilst audio description has traditionally been pre-recorded and mixed into the main audio after filming, this accessible commentary will be transmitted live as the event happens. rnib.org.uk/news/the-kings-cor…

25 years ago, brave leaders made the impossible come true by signing the Good Friday (Belfast) Agreement.

It not only ended 30 years of the Troubles, but also opened a new era of cooperation.

After a quarter of a century of peace, we recently renewed our commitment to maintaining peace and prosperity with the Windsor Framework.

It will preserve peace by avoiding a hard border on the island, while also protecting the integrity of the EU’s Single Market.

Add-on store is coming to NVDA:
According to Sean, an NVAccess developer, assuming no blocking issues are raised, the Add-on store should be merged to alpha by the end of next week.
Try build:

This try build includes user documentation though the user guide is still under review.

This is a fascinating read. As a recent lover of game shows, i have heard a lot about Barbara Lowe. Looks like a lot of it was not true, very sad. I personally think Jeopardy should invite her back if she would be interested. theringer.com/tv/2023/5/2/2370…

FYI
Pagebreak UI bug in vaersion 7.4 / 7.5?

I set document and application background to black (and text in green) for ease on my eyes, and a manual page break indicator looks like it should up to 7.0.4 which I use now (see screenshot).

When I upgraded to 7.4.5 (Devuan backports) and also tried 7.5 via flatpak, I noticed the small gap between the pages was no longer black around the dotted page break line but seemingly the standard application colour.

Very distracting for me.

Is #Gmail killing independent email?

"Is it okay that Gmail has the power to decide whether a business is sending spam or not?"

Gmail has rigged the email game imo. It makes running a self-hosted email server hard, even after properly configuring DKIM, DMARC, and SPF.

On last night's Oxide and Friends @kissane joined @bcantrill and me to discuss her terrific blog post "Blue Skies Over Mastodon". We were also fortunate to be joined by @timbray and @steveklabnik.

Bluesky has been... fun! Whereas our experience on Mastodon has been more... earnest.

We touched on a key topic of safety--a key reason for the exodus from Twitter--and the approaches Bluesky and Mastodon are taking.

Thanks again to Erin, Tim, Steve, and everyone in chat youtu.be/bcMiWZ2Er2g

Will the finished book be available in ebook form? I’m a blind person with an interest in the field, using screen-readers to interact with technology, and physical books aren’t accessible to me for obvious reasons. I noticed you mentioned “shipping copies” somewhere in your Substack, to which I have been subscribed for quite some time, and that’s why I’m concerned.
