The things that can be done with AI in audio now are both awesome and scary.
@Derek has created an AI version of me singing one of my favourite #Beatles songs. This is definitely very close to what I sound like when singing, and it's actually quite emotional in a way as it reminds me of what I used to sound like when my hearing, and therefore my pitch, was way better. Just wow.
Thank Zarquon he didn't have me singing Baker Street or he'd be blocked by now!

:boost_requested: New #Calckey:calckey:release candidate! :boost_requested:
This will be the last release candidate before the launch of the next major version! We've taken this time to add some requested features, stomp out many bugs, and ensure that everyone is getting the experience they deserve.

Also, it's my ( @kainoa@calckey.social ) 20th birthday tomorrow, so if you could boost this, I'd really appreciate it, as we've all worked really hard on this 🥺

v14.0.0-rc3 Release Notes
Major changes:
Performance improvements: many changes have been made to make the performance of Calckey even better, especially for users with a lot of followers.

New 2FA flow: both the internal 2FA library and the 2FA user interface have been updated for a smoother, cleaner, and more reliable experience making sure your account is secure.

Emoji skin tone: you can now select your preferred skin tone for body part/people emojis, and the overall experience of selecting and searching for emojis is snappier.

Reduced visual clutter: Users can now properly hide replies in their timelines, and reply notifications are more readable.

Editing: it's now possible to edit the options on a poll, and to add or remove a content warning from a post.

Deck view improvements: the deck view has a new channel column, and scrolling feels more natural. @naskya@post.naskya.net

Accessibility: focus trapping and keyboard navigation is now even more intuitive. @freeplay@calckey.social

calckey.js: the build system for the Calckey.js SDK is now fixed, so developers can get access to the latest version, and there's now auto-generated markdown documentation for using it.

Docker: after many release candidates without a proper Docker tag, the Docker image build process has finally been fixed. @nmkj@calckey.jp@lily@outdoors.lgbt

Since I keep seeing developers use ‘pretty’ IP addresses like ’1.2.3.4’ in example configurations; a reminder that you MUST NOT use publicly routable addresses that you do not control in your code.

Instead, use one of the available 'TEST-NET' IPv4 or IPv6 ranges documented in RFC 6890;

192.0.2.0/24
198.51.100.0/24
203.0.113.0/24

❌ 1.2.3.4
✅ 192.0.2.4

and for IPv6;

✅ 2001:db8::/32

Pass it on to all of your fellow developers, documentation writers, and so forth.

Full RFC for special purpose addresses;

datatracker.ietf.org/doc/rfc68…

Reserved for documentation, IPv4 and IPv6;

datatracker.ietf.org/doc/rfc57…
datatracker.ietf.org/doc/rfc38…

Unless the config field is particularly security sensitive, I’d still use something like 1.2.3.4, just because it makes it obvious that the address is an example and needs to be changed. For users who don’t know about these ranges, AKA me from two minutes ago, 192.0.2.4 looks like an existing IP address, which may or may not point at a reasonable default / vendor-provided server, and so it isn’t obvious whether it should be touched. I would say that using those addresses is a tradeoff, and it should be considered how likely 1.2.3.4 is to ever become malicious, and what the consequences would be for a particular application. Another interesting way to solve this is to use 123.456.123.456, as that is not a valid address.

@ljrk @miki Which is why posts like these are made, complete with links to the relevant sources.

Habit is no excuse, and neither is ignorance. If you are concerned that people may not realise it is provided as an example, you should document this, within the context you are using it, because that part of your argument applies regardless of which address you use as an example.

in reply to miki

@miki I think the whole point of this thread is that 1.2.3.4 does *not* make it obvious that the address is an example and needs to be changed. That's somebody's real IP address. And yes, I understand the reason why you're making this argument, that 1.2.3.4 looks made-up in a way that 192.0.2.4 does not, but that only lasts as long as nobody tries connecting to it (which realistically is not likely to be the case for long).
@miki
in reply to miki

@miki How exactly is `1.2.3.4` obvious? All IPs are equal (until divided by IETF/IANA/RIRs in blocks), and I fail to see why this one should be obvious. Is 2.3.4.5 obvious too? And 251.252.253.254? And why not 7.6.5.4? Also, no don't use random digits to make something that looks like an IPv4. It will fail the simplest validation, and just bolt bad ideas in young people brains.

First performance of O Canada at the Congrès national des Canadiens-Français. The song would later become the national anthem of Canada #OTD in 1880.

The song was originally commissioned by Lieutenant Governor of Quebec Théodore Robitaille for the 1880 Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day ceremony; Calixa Lavallée composed the music, after which words were written by the poet and judge Sir Adolphe-Basile Routhier. The original French lyrics were translated to English in 1906. via @Wikipedia

I’ve finally found the time to listen to the episode of @podcast I was graciously invited to speak on.

(I’m very excited about some of the #wwdc stuff, including #VisionPro.)

I want to say I’m touched by the way Jonathan explained the impact of r/blind on people dealing with vision loss, as well as the rest of the community. That’s one of the things that made it so hard to make the decision to go dark for two days.

Since we spoke, we’ve also come out of a meeting with Reddit with mixed feelings, and Transcribers of Reddit have announced the upcoming API changes are forcing them to shut down permanently.

I’m growing sadder and more and more disappointed. Whatever happens next, #Reddit will be less welcoming to #blind people.

For what it’s worth, we’ve been testing a Lemmy instance at rblind.com. As discussed with Jonathan, federation and FOSS allow us to be in charge of our own destiny, while staying connected to other communities.

These are hard times, but communities are made up of people, not platforms.

As a former DJ, I played a FIESTA night on #TancookIsland. The logistics were challenging, a fully loaded long DJ Van, was emptied into a container, hoisted on the ferry and dropped on the island, where a local with a van took me to the hall. They had to keep me overnight, the Ferry stops, no Public Accommodation was available. The whole island population (under 200 at largest) came to the event. Met former Sailors living there

How's your weekend going?
#GoodMorning. I've been up for 90 minutes already. I had a wonderful sleep, but at the wrong time.
Now, today will be my *long day*

I see Street Community Yard Sales going on, I'll *peek*. I wanted to drive my wife to Peggys Cove for a few photos and I forgot it was Saturday. We're not interested in crowds. I should have gone weekday.
We're just doing a scenic drive, Peggys Cove isn't the most scenic thing on the South Shore. Just the most promoted.
I'll be around

Slime. Those water bottles some offices think are good to get for the coffee room. They spread the most colds, probably Covid and anything else going around. There's no chlorine like your tap water to kill bacteria, so it grows uncontrolled. One cough by the person replacing the jug will grow bacteria in the water. We manually clean ice machines. Those are filthy devices for use by professionals, not every bar or fountain tap. Serious health risks if dirty and not regulated

Read it before the story even shows up on the homepage! UPS coming clean on a SMS phishing scam targeting customers in Canada since at least Feb. 2022.

The United Parcel Service (UPS) says fraudsters have been harvesting phone numbers and other information from its online shipment tracking tool in Canada to send highly targeted SMS phishing (a.k.a. "smishing") messages that spoofed UPS and other top brands. The missives addressed recipients by name, included details about recent orders, and warned that those orders wouldn't be shipped unless the customer paid an added delivery fee.

On May 29, 2011, we took a trip to Lancaster, PA. While there, we visited the Strasburg Railroad, and took a ride in a car attached to the no. 89, a steam locomotive manufactured in 1910.
