I just hit "submit" on Tidelift's answers to the Office of the National Cyber Director's ( #ONCD ) Request for Information on open source security, so going to think out loud here a little bit as prep for a blog post later in the week.
Today, CISA, the Office of the National Cyber Director (ONCD), and other federal partners are announcing a RFI to receive your input on where the on areas for prioritization to secure open source software.
The RFI asks about several "areas", but for Tidelift the area of particular interest — and one that underpins all others — is the area of "behavioral and economic incentives". In short, I and my co-founders started Tidelift because we believed the old incentives were showing their limits in the face of all the new pressures we have put on open source.
I am still not satisfied with how we (either at Tidelift or more broadly) talk about this problem, because our vocabulary for talking about open source is so steeped in 25 years of treating open source as magic that materializes without effort once you have free compilers and cheap networks.
🧵(As an aside, I wish I had the humor and time to submit a "devil's dictionary of open source sustainability" to this RFI: where "dependency" means "thing we don't acknowledge exists"; where "support" means "buy pizza, but not regularly because that would change the accounting treatment"; where "Nebraska" is "a place where magic happens, for free"; etc., etc.)

My favorite transition thing for the longest time was to go play a few rounds of Tetris 99 in the living room. High speed gameplay, completely engrossing, with rounds that end quickly. 15 minutes or so of this, and I was good to go do something else!
Nowadays, I mix it up more. Go do an errand, clean-up... or maybe some #Tetris still!

In Japan 'autumn foliage', depending on the reading, is known as 'momiji' (紅葉) or 'kōyō' (紅葉). Originally the terms referred to any tree that changed colour for autumn, but over time they became synonymous with the maple (楓 'kaede')🍁
The word 'kōyō' (紅葉), although used for all autumn colours, specifically refers to 'red leaves'. The word 'ōyō' (黄葉) describes 'yellow leaves', and the word 'katsuyō' (褐葉) 'brown leaves'.
Warm sunny days and crisp cold nights help leaves achieve their most vivid colours.
Not only can you enjoy viewing maple leaves in autumn, you can also eat them!
Minō (箕面) in Ōsaka Prefecture is famed for its autumn colours and its deep fried momiji (もみじの天ぷら). Leaves are harvested especially for cooking.
Legend has it that momiji tempura first began 1300 years ago, created by the mountains ascetics (shugenja 修験者 and yamabushi 山伏) who worshiped at the waterfall. Inspired by the leaves (and the large volume of visitors), they struck upon the idea of serving a seasonal snack.
Yellow leaves are harvested and pickled (giving them flavour and preserving them for year-long use). Red leaves are not used as the stems grow too hard. The leaves are typically fried with sugar (& sesame) added to the batter, then left overnight.
Momiji tempura is nowadays flavoured in many different ways...sweet, salty & everything in-between🍁 When visiting Minō, do check out Hisakuni Kōsendō (久國紅仙堂). The store raises 150 maple trees & has been specialising in momiji tempura for 80 years.

The 'gari' (狩り) in 'momijigari' (紅葉狩り) originally referred to the capturing of wild animals and birds, but over time also came to mean 'harvesting', 'gathering' or 'picking' plants. Another example of this is 'kudamono-gari' (果物狩り), which means to gather fruit.
