It's been a while but here's a new graph I'm testing. Getting the complexity for every function in #curl then assigning that complexity for all lines in that function. This gives an "average complexity per source code line".
Id guess that itβs mostly the same functions that keep the complexity once it gets there. ( that is my experience at least) and it simply just climbed the threshold then and didnβt look back.
@Spider right, usually functions get complex and then just gradually increase their complexity over time and when I have these "buckets" in the graph one tiny change can make it show as the next level complexity.
do you have a reference somewhere on what tools you use to calculate that number and generate the graphs? It's the first time I see that metric in a CI/CD chain and it looks very interesting.
@aris this latest one is simply iterating over all relevant git tags, then runs 'git show' on the proper files into the pmccabe tool and stores the output for every tag. Then I gnuplot the the graph itself. Part of my curl dashboard setup.
When we do the right de-complications, the number will go down.
But itβs refactoring on how things operate, not βjustβ splitting up high-scoring functions into pieces.
Complexity, to me, is dominated by the amount of state functions operate on. Not the if/switch paths. When all functions have access to a couple hundred state variable, things remain very complex.

New #OpenZFS tool landed this week: rewrite a file in place, updating location, compression, checksums and other storage characteristics, but without any evidence above the filesystem layer.
It's not quite the fabled magical block pointer rewrite, but with thoughtful use it can certainly help with much-wanted operations like rebalancing a pool.
oh shit this is great, I wrote my own tooling to do this for me but it wasn't "in-place". It works very well, but you have to run it multiple times to get an even distribution across VDEVs
