Did you know that #Mastodon supports #RSS feeds?

That means you can follow your favorite people and topics right inside of Thunderbird!

→ Just add ".rss" to the URL ←

For example, our Mastodon URL "mastodon.online/@thunderbird"

becomes

"mastodon.online/@thunderbird.r…"

What about #hashtags? YEP!

Let's look at #OpenSource. From our instance, it is: "mastodon.online/tags/opensourc…"

So, we just append .rss and it works!

"mastodon.online/tags/opensourc…"

REALLY useful if you don't want to miss a thing!

@joemcken You could even organize various account and hashtag feeds inside of subfolders if you wanted to get really crazy!

Oh, I already use folders and subfolders like a maniac. I gotta, what with my – <checks> – 393 feeds 😂

@killyourfm Admittedly, 105 are YouTube creators (I follow them via RSS too since YouTube push notifications are so unreliable), and another 123 are artists I follow on a particular site. Rest is all over the place.

@trtmn Awesome. That's what we're here to do!
in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

Hey! Thunderbird! Old buddy, I haven't seen you for years. Figured you got settled down in the suburbs and had kids or something.
in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

whoa! Let’s hope that it’s not going to put too much load on the instances :) it would also be nice if mastodon would act as an rss reader.

Yep. I use RSS when I want to follow an account's postings without signaling to them as a follower.
in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

Wow - Thunderbird supports RSS?! I’ve been using Thunderbird for the plaintext email and PGP signing, but I just learned a few days ago that it also supports Matrix, and just now viewing RSS! I visit Mastodon frequently and don’t follow many users yet so I don’t think I’ll need this for Mastodon yet, but it will be useful in other platforms.

@jomarm We're loaded up with features!

Pro-tip: You can easily add YouTube/PeerTube channels, organize feeds into subfolders, and even use uBlock Origin to blocks ads and creepy trackers: github.com/gorhill/uBlock/rele…

Apparently this does not work with lists however. Is there a trick to making it work with lists?
in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

I think when following the rss-stream, the user will not notice that at all though - so if everybody does that we end up with all feeds and people thinking noone follows them..
in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

This could also be useful in a case where there's a Mastodon account that you're occasionally interested in but don't really want to follow on a regular basis.
in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

I use my RSS feed(s) to mirror my posts to a Discord channel, with the help of pipedream.com

There are a lot of cool things that can be done with this feature. I hope more people can find helpful ways to use it.

in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

If I would like to follow a Hashtag it is only possible to follow that term on on specific instance, right?

Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox
@lukaspieper Yes! It may not be implemented on Day 1, but we'll be doing it.
in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

Much to learn about Mastodon. And this feature is awesome. Really wished several times to be able to subscribe to or even to see some channels on other platforms or even media without having to register.

Really helpful to know.

Thunderbird's excellent support of RSS makes a weekly assignment for which I'm responsible -much- more sustainable than otherwise. Not quite at an existential level, but pretty close.

Hence, taking this opportunity to say Thank You Very Much!

in reply to Doug Bostrom

@Doug_Bostrom Well, you are absolutely welcome! I think we can do more to make the RSS functionality better though.

One of the things we're looking at is syncing your RSS feeds sometime after Firefox Sync gets enabled (just not at launch).
