Sea hares (ocean slug-like creatures) are hermaphrodites that mate in chains of up to 20, with each one simultaneously acting as the male for the one below and the female for the one above.

I’m pretty sure that every weird idea about alien life written by science fiction writers already exists in the ocean. Life on land is so same-y by comparison.
