Hey, someone's boosted a cool bit of art from an artist on Fedi I haven't seen before! Clicking Like.
Clicking over to their posts, they have some other fun art I like! I'll just scroll a little more before clicking that Follow button...
"FYI I'm going to focus my efforts on Substack."
Backing away from Follow button forever.

Lex knows so much about this and can help (and you might end up working with me too in your Ghost migration) (I help out at Outpost coz they are really cool)

D-Day. As in d day I officially cancelled all paid subscriptions to authors I like and follow BUT sadly publish only on Substack.
THIS IS THE PART WHERE I SHARE THE IMPORTANT TO KNOW STUFF. ⬇️⬇️⬇️
CAN’T DO THIS
I also attempted to make sure my account listing my original email to be a subscriber in Substack was removed or changed to a different one that’s an alias email account. CAN’T DO THIS in Substack.
After I cancel each subscription I had paid for I tried to remove my credit card. CAN’T DO THIS in Substack.
Tried to delete any posts I had made in a lame personal Substack. CAN’T DO THIS in Substack. Tried to delete a few photos I shared. CAN’T DO THIS in Substack.
Um. How interesting these discoveries are. Even if I completely delete my account, Substack retains my email, my posts, my comments on any article published on Substack and my photos. I wonder why this would be. #Substack #SubstackNazis
Another one of my posts. This one on the topic of AI tools as assistive technology, what's working, what isn't and why, all without the hype that too many people tend to lean into when discussing this technology:

„However for all creators or potential creators, I will say again: leaving Substack behind is probably a better idea than staying no matter your circumstance, and it is easier than I thought it would be, and it costs less than I feared it would.“ — A.R. Moxon

Hey my reflections on leaving Substack a year ago are on Techdirt. Isn't that neat? https://www.techdirt.com/2025/04/11/a-newsletter-writer-reflects-on-leaving-substack/Mastodon
So, @micahflee has a great piece about how authors should leave Substack because it is "brologarchy garbage" and more expensive than alternative Ghost.

And, got to wondering if authors knew how many potential subscribers they were losing by publishing on the much hated platform.
Here are the results of yesterday's poll on the subject. 81% of 472 people said they would never subscribe to someone's #Substack even if they really wanted to subscribe to their newsletter.
Not only is Substack right-wing broligarchy garbage, it's way more expensive than Ghost
A lot of us know by now that Substack has a Nazi problem. It not only profits from fascist voices, it actively promotes their work and recruits them.Micah Lee
For some reason people fleeing the sinking #Twitter / #X ship for #BlueSky don't seem to be aware of the fact that crypto bros at #BlockchainCapital bought a huge stake in the company just a few weeks ago. Like these are basically the same crypto bros who just helped #ElonMusk buy Twitter. They might even be literally the same people (I strongly suspect they are but I'm too lazy to check). Either way #BlockchainCapital was co-founded by #BrockPierce, who also brought you #Tether, AKA the company that Trump's transition team chairman manages $120 billion for. Pierce is also a friend of the #Netanyahu family.
You don't have to take my word for it. Here's the official press release: bsky.social/about/blog/10-24-2…
Moving to BlueSky is not an escape. Growing a base there is just putting in a bunch of work to create a platform that will be co-opted by crypto bros as soon as X breaks in half.
@molly0xfff's post on migrating from Substack by self hosting is a master piece in clear communication. This is how you cover a complex issue without glossing over details due to hindsight while also not making the topic sound more daunting. A great example of building stairs and elevators after you've climbed instead of pulling the ladder. Highly recommend reading even if you're not in the newsletter sending game.

Migrating from Substack to self-hosted Ghost: the details
