Nyhavn, the famous canal area in Copenhagen. The sky is pale blue, almost entirely covered by streaky white clouds. We are looking across the canal water to the iconic bank with its long row of historic, colourful terraced houses. Some three storeys, some four or five storeys, the gentle up-and-down variety of heights of the triangular rooftops gives the skyline a bit of a wing, like a line of musical notes. The houses are painted in a random variety of strong colours- light blue, dark blue, buttercup yellow, mustard yellow, deep orange, rust red. By contrast, the seawater in the canal is the colour of August in Denmark – cold hard black. On the opposite bank: people at pavement cafes, walking along - also some delivery trucks and cars because this is early morning. Two picturesque wooden boats are anchored facing one another, prow to prow, just below the wooden quay. One is black. One is white, with Dannebrog, the Danish flag, waving off it. The flag is red with a white cross.

Shot with an aperture of f2, the only thing in sharp focus is the front edge of the concrete planter. Nature is beautiful.

Peering over a low sloping old stone pier wall that borders the bottom of the scene. We can see the town of St. Ives in Cornwall across a bay of almost tropically light green sea below a light blue sky. A few boats are anchored in front of the town, which curves down to the water and a picturesque small white beacon on a jutting pier. Our view is framed on the left and right by the edges of two old stone houses, one yellow, one white with a corner window. The feeling of the scene, to me: nothing dramatic, just simple and quiet, a glimpse of a pretty town as we near it. All the colours are muted, making it it all calm.

A snowy mountain scene. I'm on a snowshoe path empty besides my dog, there are small icy ponds to my side and forested mountainsides around me. The sky is so grey and the ground is so white there's not a super obvious separation except where the trees make boundaries between sky and earth.

A Misty Morning at the River Brathay

I was out early on Wednesday morning. The forecast wasn't ideal, just v.cold (actually -10C).

I hung around waiting for the sunrise to hit the two oaks in the photo. As the sun reached the valley it kicked off the mist around the water.

I struggled to pick a favourite so these and more hi-res photos from the morning on my website, see my profile for a link.

A pair of seaside rock pools in early evening.

The rocks that serve as home to the pools in this image are a reddish sandstone. A delicate patch of green seaweed is visible in the larger pool. The smaller pool nestled in the lower left is strikingly circular and quite deep for its size, most likely eroded out of the rock by pebbles caught in eddies in the tide. A few small grey flat stones are visible in the larger pool in the center.

The dry rock face surrounding the pools is scattered with tiny barnacles and small periwinkle snails, and a few limpets, patiently awaiting the return of the tide.

The low angle of the sunlight coming from the lower left casts a few shadows.

The location of the pools is at Talland Bay, on the southeast coast of Cornwall (UK).

I spent many wonderful lazy summer afternoons "rock pooling" here as a child in the 1970s and this images personally extremely evocative of wonderful memories for me period.

The rock pools on this beach are unusually fine examples, no doubt thanks to Talland's unique obliquely layered sandstone rock formations.
