Brilliant! #PayPal now uses #HCaptcha too! SO I now can't log into it because no matter what you change the cookie will just not set, and they don't enable the text option. I apparently now need to switch to stripe to accept payments, I'm being locked out of a business account here because of this bullshit!

Content warning: HateCaptcha again

#HCaptcha is a barrier for many blind/visually impaired users, for some of the reasons outlined in my recent post here: https://universeodon.com/@FreakyFwoof/111954929582025753

Yes, #Mastodon supports #HCaptcha, but HCaptcha mines details of some of us with disabilities by asking us to sign up with an email address to, as they put it, 'get an accessibility cookie.' If you use that service, it is a bad time for many. HCaptcha is not my friend.
Edit: For reasons why I categorically state HCaptcha is evil, see this post I made in response to someone else. People have quite rightly asked me to clarify my stance, so here it is: https://universeodon.com/@FreakyFwoof/111956924313468553

Wow, that post about #HCaptcha got viral, I even don't expected it.

@craftxbox It's evil, because *only* if you're blind or unable to complete the visual captcha, do they require your email address.
'Oh, let's be another corporation, but we're niche and specific. We only want email addresses of those who are blind/visually impaired, so we could, at our discretion, spam them with blindness-specific products or services that our visual users would never see, as they never had to provide an email address.'
When you go to the chemist (drug store or whatever it's called today) to buy, oh I dono, tampons, do you have to give them your email address because you're a woman?
Nope. Very, very definitely nope, but because I'm blind, I have to give some nameless, faceless company my address, to have a cookie that hardly ever works anyway at the best of times, and even when it does, is now tracking me across any site with *their* version of so-called captcha?
No. Absolutely not. Get the hell out with that.

Re last: Please please please, don't use #HCaptcha! We blind people call it HateCaptcha, and it's for a reason. Their accessibility so-called innovative technology is simply broken and doesn't work reliably. You can't imagine how much time I spent fighting with this so-called accessibility cookie. Please don't use it, for goodness sake. #MastoAdmin

I know that the mastodon team are suggesting you turn on #hCaptcha for signups to your instance, to combat the spam wave provided by a rudimentary script that doesn't have the smarts to get around it.

I vaguely remember, however, that people have previously raised #accessibility concerns about it. Does anyone have any experience with the accessibility or lack there of, of signing up to instances that use this feature?

If it is indeed inaccessible, I don't consider this to be a reasonable solution.

The Mastodon development team currently suggest enabling #hCaptcha in order to combat the current spam wave in the fediverse.

However, hCaptcha discriminates genuine users with disabilities from accessing your instance. So if people and inclusion are important to you, please just don't. Consider closing your public registrations instead, for the time being.

So I wrote a blog post for the first time in 5 years, warning about hcaptcha's accessibility account. Long story short, they banned me from the accessibility account because I'm not blind. I am blind, but well, they seem to think not. Please boost, share, etc since this seriously affects me, and it's not ok at all. You can read the full blog post here: https://4mt.me/hcaptchastory

Please, please do not do this under any circumstance, if you care about your instance being accessible to the #blind and visually impaired (hint, you should).

#HCaptcha is a horrible example of how not to implement a #captcha solution, forcing people to register their email address and store a cookie, as well as disable cross origin restrictions on their devices in order to pass validation.

There are much better alternatives, such as the no-hassle https://github.com/mCaptcha/mCaptcha, which does not need any user input other than checking a checkbox. Alternatively, use captchas that provide text versions, e.g. via solving a math question or at the very minimum, provide an audio version, knowing that it is not ideal for the hearing impaired.

HCaptcha is NOT the future. #accessibility #a11y
