Bad actors will soon figure out - if they haven't already - that setting up impersonations of important organizations now will allow them to set off an explosion of chaos and confusion at a time of their choosing.
So if you run an account for an organization (especially #LGBTQ), please set up link verification between your Mastodon account profile and your organization's website.
I'd even say that self-hosting their account is for them the best checkmark. If Company owns company.com, then I'd trust company@company.com more than company@mastodon.social.

well they could not delete their Twitter account but start investing I'm alternatives like Mastodon. Twitter seems to be on as self destruct course. Best to prepare for an alternative that one fragile ego can't destroy.

Oh wow :) We used to use perl-Gtk2 heavily at work (even as far as packaging a sort-of self-contained exe for Windows with ActivePerl), and it worked pretty well, considering :D
@phl perl-Gtk2 was pretty cool, all things considered; we made sure that the API looked and behaved like an idiomatic Perl module, even if meant writing a bunch of terrible XS code. These days, you can load the introspection data with 5 lines, and then write some native Perl to get a decent API out of the C API.

folgen & kommentieren kannst Du direkt von Deinem Mastodon-Account aus. Kopiere beispielsweise einfach die URL in Deine Suchmaske (z.B. @izzy zum Testen) und Du kannst folgen bzw. bei einer URL zu einem Beitrag kommentieren).
Willst Du hingegen selbst Videos bei PeerTube, oder Stories bei PixelFed einstellen, brauchst Du dort einen Account – die Software muss das halt auch unterstützen. Vergleich: EINBINDEN eines Fotos in ein Textdokument geht ohne Grafik-Programm, ERSTELLEN nicht 😉
@Riedeule Einerseits ja, weil bequem – aber andererseits… würde das wieder Zentralisierung bedeuten (wer managed dann das SSO? Das erste S steht ja für "Single"). Was mit so etwas passieren kann sehen wir ja gerade: Wer Twitter als SSO benutzt muss sich jetzt sputen das umzustellen, bevor der Vogel ganz tot ist – oder verliert den Zugang zu allen damit verbundenen Diensten.
Mein "SSO" heißt daher Keepass. So brauche ich mir auch nur 1 Passwort merken.
Why are people joining issue or specific Mastodon servers? I'm interested in many issues, and am curious about ones tied to #OpenSource #Sustainability & #Accessibility, but unsure how or why people choose.
Are certain instances going to be seen as being more legitimate? How will sustainability be managed as numbers grow? What happens if I move & that instance shuts down?
With the sad news that KNZK was shutting down we thought it might be useful for people to have a refresher on the features that Mastodon has built in that make moving instances easy and painless.
@blindscribe Interesting. I haven't seen much commercialisation yet, but can totally see how with even 10k members a server would have a monetary value that might be worth selling.

I hadn't really thought about defederation. I do like the idea of supporting ($$) a server that is well maintained and tied to how I would like to identify.
@blindscribe Like that this federated approach allows for both anonymous and verified accounts without any difficulty. Also allows for self-identified bots too!
@jeff_schmidt Having the Local be a prioritized group makes sense to me. If it is associated with a community you care about, then that certainly helps.
I have two accounts on two instances - tech.lgbt and woof.group. Both are intentionally LGBT run and moderated so I know I won't have to deal with hate. Woof.group recently closed applications after hitting 1k active users. This makes it cheaper to run and able to be moderated as the mods collectively read every post. Choose an instance based on moderation and local timeline. Sustainable growth here is horizontal - more smaller instances.
in theory, in the "Local" tab, you'll have more stuff that is server specific, but historically, all the servers were below critical threshold, so it was empty. Now all servers are above critical threshold of people, but not of topics. Maybe it will sort itself out once the tide ebbs, or .something else.
The said #CSS class .icon has a property height: 48px which with current HTML structure causes a distance between two lines when I view a remote profile (view: /contact/X or a post (view: /display/X):
I'm sure, removing height from the said CSS class won't fix it in the long run but maybe checking the HTML/div structure would.

Politika, už i tady? 🥺 A ještě k tomu na doméně technicky zaměřených lidí. Tohle pravidlo úplně neuznávanám, jde právě proti svobodě a myšlence #fediverse . I člověk, kterého nepodporuji, popř. nemám rád. Tak se má právo vyjádřit.
@tasmandevil Já si zase myslím, že je právě cílené za svobodu slova. Ani tak to nemá co společného jen s Burešem, ale s těmi co svojí ideologií svobodu slova potlačovali. Proč by se zde měli vyjadřovat lidí co svodu jiných potlačovali. Je to cílené proti komunistickému režimu celkové.
já vím, chápu. Ale tím že omezíme jejich svobodu slova tak se stavíme do jejich pozic a neodlišuje nás nic. Nejlépe takové lidi umlátit reálnými a co nejpřesnějšími "fakty". Zatím se zde komunita Sputniku, Aeronetu apod. nepřesunula. Pokud ano čekal bych že si vytvoří vlastní server a v takovém případě ty jako majitel tohoto serveru máš nárok na regulaci.
Chtěl jsem tím hlavně říct i to, že jsem tento server zvolil právě protože je technický tedy spojující Arch linux CZ komunitu, ale i další samozřejmě a taka i svojí přítomností zde vyjadřuji i svůj postoj k věcem. A pohledu na věc. 👍

Pokud používáte Mastodon, tak oficiální webová stránka joinmastodon.org/apps má seznam oficiálních aplikací a aplikací třetích stran.Já na Androidu používám Tusky, ale dobrá aplikace je i Fedilab. Pokud máte vyzkoušenou aplikaci na iOs, dejte prosím vědět, určitě to někdo ocení 👍 #tip_mastodon
