What bullshitery, Tiflotecnia's Vocalizer licenses have a limit, was just told that I've hit my max registered licenses, very sad, right away, just removed the add-on. Looks like back to the cracked Vocalizer we go, since they don't even have a portal where you can reset your license, wow. Here I had thought Tiflo got better, but nope. (Still sent them an e-mail to the address my license came from and I sent proof of purchase for the CF one, we'll ssee if it's one of those no-response ones, just listed as tiflotecnia@tiflotecnia.com.) Can someone scan through their documentation and tell me if they reference anywhere a line about a license limit, needing to deauthorize a license to get the counter lowered, ETC? Very interesting, not entirely surprised this is kept to prevent sharing of licenses though.
@ginsenshi I think 5 or 6? I remember deactivating some machines, but over the last 2 years or so I had reinstalled Windows, changed two laptops, sometimes activated on virtual machines... Not really caring to always deactivate, but clearly it bit me in the ass at some point down the line.
I've never purchased voices since the code factory eloquence SAPI 5 voice started saying please register this product when I was demoing something for someone 10 years ago. Was connected to the internet at the time. Blind individuals obviously care way more about these voices than the companies that actually sell them do, so I'll use what the fans have made instead.
ok, I am not going to be happy if this is truely the case. I mean I get it a limit of three, or something, but if you can't give your key back, that is so 2010. and what if a key gets eaten before you can give it back? resetting it back to three is not that hard to do. now I get it, there might be people that abuse it, and ask for resets a lot, then you need to do it on a case by case thing or something, but if you can't give keys back, or reset the count, because your keys got eaten before you could give thatm back won't make me happy at all.
Even so, did Nuance sell the product itself to another company? Seems like the Vocalizer product from the main page links to some sort of AI company focusing mostly on cars.
that's honestly pretty insane they don't hae anywhere to remove a license to make room for another machine. What were they thinking? that someone would only use the add-on on one computer? The hell is wrong with people, man.
According to the offline activation JSON, max_activations is 3, but that is why I am always careful to activate and deactivate, as Tiflotecnia is just a license reseller or whatever the term is. I don't trust Cerence at all, hence my carefulness. That said though, I bought the license simply to have a legit way of using a Vietnamese voice before, of course, RHVoice came out with a superior offering.
@twynn Much as it sucks, I can't blame Tiflotecnia. From what I understand about Nuance (and I doubt anything changed with the split to Cerence), they basically had a contractual requirement which effectively stipulated that resellers were entirely responsible for copy protection, and if any unauthorised copying was discovered, the reseller would be held entirely responsible, including financial damages. When you're confronted with a contractual requirement like that from a company the size of Nuance, you don't take it lightly.
Hoping my Tiflotecnia Vocalizer issues will get solved today, I have 3 machines with my desktop, HP laptop, Asus laptop. So that's it, no work machine getting Vocalizer now. Ah well. They were not the ones to pay for it anyway, I'll just get them to invoice a license for me if I really needed to use it for work. Bye bye Vocalizer on Virtual Mac OS either, since that would count as a 4th machine. Argh. Guess I'll need to buy a second 3-pack license if I want it on more machines like that, what can I say, I just love computers. I sleep with 2 of them under the bed, 4 or 5 in storage bins like my old Macbook Air, so it's quite easy to hit that 3-machine ceiling for me.

I'm probably just easily impressed but it comes to something when I didn't have to replace a *single* instance of 'Roads' with 'Rhodes' in the subtitles I uploaded, as created by MacWhisper. I opened up the file ahead of uploading to skim it as I usually do, thinking that I'd have to swap out 100% of the word 'Rhodes' and absolutely none were wrong. I think that is fantastic.
This is one thing LLMs are pretty good at. Give them a transcript, explain what it is and ask to fix. Much faster than a human. Still requires manual review afterwards, but LLMs can usually do 80% of the work.
For harder cases, Google's Gemini models (both flash and pro) support audio input natively, and they're better at transcription than Whisper in my experience. More prone to hallucination when the quality is so bad that even a human has trouble understanding, but overall better nonetheless.
This is just sumthing that i have seen happen to me on multiple occasions. If i forget to type i in trying to write a word with ing, i might accidentally type this, ng! The sound is unexplainable, and weird. This is today's Audio Shit Fest, Part 9!
TTS noises were something I made a lot of back in the day. Different engines, different sounds. AT&T Mike is where I got my name from>. Freaky Fwoof. It said Fwoof in a weird way, and it then became who I am today. It also said the word 'Nananaf' in a particularly bizarre way. VW Paul would hum like a generator if you typed 'BWBW' followed by a vowel. Many, many things like that I can think of.
You need a VM then. Oh, and can't forget about Infovox 3, which would go absolutely crazy when given the phrase 'RSS readers for phones' without any punctuation over and over again. I have a recording of that one.
@alexchapman @cachondo I didn't grow up with Eloquence as so many do, my version of favourite TTS is Dolphin Orpheus which I use in NVDA. Using it right now in fact.
@FreakyFwoof @alexchapman there was a recent Keynote revival, which is great, but I never had a Braillenote. I'm hoping for an analogue one next, which is as close as I think I'm going to get to doubletalk.

@cachondo @FreakyFwoof @alexchapman I am just not a fan of the idea that at any moment, the add on can be unsupported. I just don't even bother. I used to use different speech add ons, be for i started using Sapi5 Mike full time, and none worked out for what i needed. I was also looking for a universal engine for both Jaws and NVDA, making it seemless whenever i move between the two screenreaders.
@cachondo @alexchapman Well you have a damn long time to see if it will be or not, and since the store now allows you to enable unsupported addons, I see no problem.

@cachondo @FreakyFwoof @alexchapman Yes, Eloquence is dead on X64 Android now, for the most part. Thank god i have an E-speak APK that is X64, and that was not a concern to me. When Eloquence died, people collectively lost it, and all you heard about was the angry people complaining about it. There are alternitives, but i understand thats just not possible for sum.
@FreakyFwoof @alexchapman well obviously it's possible. I moved from Nokia to Apple in 2010 and had no eloquence on mobile for a decade. I didn't like it, but I put up with it because of all the other benefits of having an iPhone. The saddest thing is that there are lots of enthusiasts and hobbyists who'd put code out there, but someone's paid to keep it behind closed doors, even though it's not bringing them in any money or being of any use to them.
@cachondo @FreakyFwoof @alexchapman code Factory had it on the Google Play store, but claim the reason they are not making a 64-bit version is because people are apparently cracking it too much. Okay cracks are a thing, and I do have slight objections to them, but everybody hates code factory. Nearly every person I know says nothing good about them. They start off with a product, they publish it and release it, and then all of a sudden they seemingly abandon it. I have just steered clear of anything that requires updates. In vda and Jaws obviously not, is I know those two get consistently updated but all of these add-ons, and these paid synthesizers that may I remind you I'm paying for, don't get updated. I don't know Harpo soft track record, but I know code Factory has a pretty shoddy one.

They also discontinued their OCR software and Braille translator, focusing on Supernova as a mainly magnifier-based product, Dolphin Guide, and latterly their easy reader app for iOS.

@mhussain @fireborn @alexchapman they didn't even make it onto the Web AIM Screen reader surveys for a while, there were so few users. They compete with Zoomtext more than JAWS and NVDA directly, people like @FreakyFwoof who used it up until comparitively recently without any eyesight aren't the demographic they've been targeting for the last decade. The magnification side of Supernova is respected and deployed widely in UK schools, libraries etc.
@mhussain @fireborn @alexchapman @FreakyFwoof They did have a very powerful scripting system based on LUA. I got a free day's training out of them at work back in ... 2013? and it was a nicely done tool. Ironically many of the people writing the modules were doing so with NVDA.

@fireborn @mhussain @cachondo @alexchapman I was newly using Chrome at the time and it would crash the screen-reader without warning several times a day. One day I said to myself that one more crash would make me try NVDA for a day... Then it turned into a week... Then it turned into forever.
