The true cost of not prioritizing accessibility: Avoid risk and maximize product ROI

"...if a bug is found in the requirements-gathering phase, the cost could be $100. If the product owner doesn’t find that bug until the QA testing phase, then the cost could be $1,500. If it’s not found until production, the cost could be $10,000."

We are fourteen days from the pending next #curl release.

At 11 changes and 214 merged bugfixes. One CVE.

41 persons (10 new) have authored commits in the source code repository since we shipped 8.8.0.

One of the nice visual improvements I worked on for GNOME Settings 47.beta is the "Add User" dialog now using libadwaita widgets and a reworked password feedback label. Still not final, but already looking neat!

Stepping down as GNOME Internships organizer

For the past nine years, I’ve been actively involved in our internship initiatives with Google Summer of Code and Outreachy. As an alumnus of these programs, I firmly believe they are great ways to onboard new contributors to GNOME and help students start a career in open-source software.

However, as my work responsibilities have grown and I’ve started some personal (non-software) projects, I’ve found myself with less time and energy for this type of contribution.

I’ve been discussing this with key people over the past year, and I plan to stay around to hand over responsibilities to other members of the Internship Committee. I will continue helping manage things for 2024, but I won’t be directly involved beyond that.

If you’re interested in helping with these activities, please reach out to the GNOME Internship Committee.

Felipe, you have done SO MUCH WORK on internships and welcoming newcomers over the years! All the workshops, all the admin work, it blows my mind. Here's a very heartfelt Thank You to you 😀

Went down a rabbit hole reading up on adventure game history and half way through I’m thinking “nearly every genre-defining game has its own engine”. No one in gaming says “oh, why’d you reinvent a game engine for your game?” It’s clear why… you’re creating something unique and you need an engine tuned to its needs. And you want to be able to use the engine for other, similar, games.

Which made me think: Kitten is the game engine for the Small Web.

It sounds like you're saying someone should make an adventure game in kitten and now I'm getting old browser text rpg flashbacks and this definitely needs to happen.

It blows my mind that it is possible to replicate a Macintosh on such minimal hardware. An RPi Pico could not just fit in my pocket, I could stuff dozens in there. Here is the story of how it was done.

IMPORTANT STUDY: “On average, the implementation of 30 km/h speed limits in European cities demonstrated a 23%, 37%, and 38% reduction in road crashes, fatalities, and injuries respectively. Lower speed limits also yielded environmental benefits, with emissions decreasing on average by 18%, and fuel consumption by 7%, indicating enhanced fuel efficiency and reduced environmental impact.”

Today I used, among other apps, Exhibit to preview some 3D files, Tuba for checking my #Mastodon timeline, Keypunch for some typing practice on my new #Corne keyboard, Black Box for terminal stuff, and Switcheroo for converting some images.
in reply to Jorge Toledo

And I want to say I'm loving the state of #GNOME's app ecosystem. Lots of apps, most of them really nice, many of them incredibly polished and well designed. The vision of small applications that do one thing and do it great was never so close.

All my love for the developers of these and many other great applications out there, and also for the GNOME community, for creating the ground for such an ecosystem to grow.

A fascinating and disturbing look at how finite-element engineering simulations, though potentially very accurate, are nonetheless sometimes wildly wrong thanks to old/misused code, and dodgy shortcuts that Gilbert Strang calls “variational crimes”.

in reply to David Goldfield

I would use something like that for sure, no more "mom, can we go somewhere?" I can just get the robot and just go anywhere.
the article mentions that this actually has previous generations?
maybe I should buy one?
in reply to patricus

@patricus I predict that Glidance is going to be the next major big thing right up there with the screen reader, iPhone and the Braille 'n Speak. It's going to create a major shift in the way in which we travel but I also wonder if some old-school O&M instructors will embrace it.

Beloved Apple blog TUAW was shut down in 2015, sold to private equity, then sold to a company in Hong Kong. It recently relaunched as an AI content farm using the stolen identities and bylines of its former human staff. A nightmare:

in reply to Jason Koebler

TUAW has now changed its "writers' names" to random other things. "Christina Warren" is now "Mary Brown."

So now it has "just" bastardized the work of these journalists and is polluting the internet, but at least is not stealing their names and poisoning their search results ...... success?

Positon (positon.xyz/) is a geolocation service closely tied to a group of people targeting our team with harassment. We urge people to avoid submitting their sensitive location data to this service. People involved in it have supported doxxing and swatting attacks.
in reply to GrapheneOS

They intend to lock people in to the service by keeping a lot of the data proprietary. They've repeatedly talked about locking people into it and avoiding having alternatives to it. Their priority is having control and ownership of data while sabotaging decentralized approaches.

Sometimes you can tell a lot about a person by the domains they register. For no particular reason, I was looking at the domain footprint of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, and found a phone number connected to her over the years that was used to register mtgforamerica[.]us back in 2021. The domain's registration records are hidden behind privacy services from anonymize.com, but their privacy system assigns a unique email to each private registrant, so you can still do a reverse search on that and find out what other domains are registered by the same account.

Domaintools finds 21683@anonymize.com was used to register 156 domains, including supportkylerittenhouse[.]com and repealjuneteenth.com. Here's the full list if anyone's interested: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d…

while we've managed to scrimp and save to make it to kitsune tails' release day, releasing august 1st means we won't see any money for almost 2 months until its the end of september

our other games are currently on sale on itch at eniko.itch.io/ and steam at store.steampowered.com/bundle/… and buying some or all of them would help tremendously

EDIT: just for clarity this is a "we're worried about making rent" situation and not "oh no the business' coffers are looking a little bit empty"
