If I tell Telegram to hide my last seen status from someone, it rightfully doesn't show me that person's online status. *Unless* ... I pay for Telegram premium. Then I can see anyone's activity regardless of mine being off. It's always nice when a company takes a fair implementation and fucks it up by adding a pay-to-win option.
in reply to simon.old

I think you can do that. There are exceptions. Although with premium, everyone gets access to your status even if you hid it which in my opinion is unfair. If I hide my status, I don't want to see people's either, unless it's necessary. But tg screwed it up, so now I don't care about it. I think it's fair to hide whatever you want to hide to be hidden. Not to mention premium probs ignores a lot of other stuff, like my number being hidden. Don't know that, won't be surprised if that's the case though.
in reply to Winter blue tardis🇧🇬🇭🇺

@tardis @jscholes Wait, what? If you hide your status, premiums can still see whether you're active? If that's correct I might actually delete my Telegram account.
in reply to simon.old

Let me see, but I think it might mention it in privacy settings of the app. Will see what it says.
in reply to simon.old

It says this, but I have no idea how to interpret it.

Unless you are a Premium user, you won't see Last Seen or Online statuses for people with whom you don't share yours. Approximate times will be shown instead (recently, within a week, within a month).

Nothing else that I see. But still I classify this as a weird private option.

in reply to Winter blue tardis🇧🇬🇭🇺

@tardis @jscholes Oh, this makes sense to me. If you don't show online status to anyone, you won't see it for anyone. If you show it to everyone, you'll see it for everyone who shows it.
in reply to Nick Giannak III

Yeah, but premium totally lets you see others' status even if you have hidden yours. Which to me makes 0 sense, and if it were supposed to be so, it could've simply been a free option by default from the start.
in reply to Winter blue tardis🇧🇬🇭🇺

@tardis @jscholes Oh it's an odd bit of optionality. But it's not an invasion of privacy. If you could see someone's status who hid it from you, that's a different story.
in reply to Nick Giannak III

Maybe you could. In any case, never been premium and this whole thing is something I don't agree with particularly for this app. No one should be paying for accessibility options like voice message transcription, it should be included free if possible.
in reply to Nick Giannak III

I consider it an invasion of privacy, because if you hide your status and have premium, it's just not fair to see others' status when they can't see yours. You see, just a feature to get people to pay them money, but I'm sure we're all aware that a lot of capitalist things invade privacy, so, yeah.
in reply to James Scholes

I think there's a way to mute conversations in Mastodon, but I might be wrong. Also depends on the app. But I'm not to keen on discussing much of it, so there's that.

I do like a few instruments in Komplete 15 Ultimate, but they barely mount to a sum that would justify an update from Komplete 13 Ultimate that I currently have. How many folks here made a leap?
in reply to victor tsaran

Have 14 Ultimate here. Not upgrading. The only thing I might upgrade is Kontakt if instruments start requiring it.
in reply to victor tsaran

And I'm still using Komplete 13 Ultimate as well. I've only upgraded Kontakt to version 7. Upgrade is too pricy for me, so I'll probably wait a littlebit more.

SEEKING A NEW VOCABULARY TERM

So you know how you ask for an email (not an SMTP, yahoo, google, aol, or etc)? You can also ask for a call or text (not a telephony, SIP, T-mobile, ATT, Voynage, or etc). So XMPP works the same way, but we don't have a word for it.

I need a word that means contact me over #XMPP, without using XMPP; which is a protocol, or Jabber, which has been intrusively trademarked. Put your thinking hats on. What word would work? It might need to be a new one.

#xmpp
in reply to Delib

When I try to explain people how to contact me via #XMPP, there are two ways:

1. The easy way:
"You can contact me via Quicksy".
Since it is available for iOS and Android for free and my JID is registered there.
Advantage: People can explain this to others.

2. The advanced way:
"I am using messaging apps which support a messaging standard.
My chat address is ...
You can choose an app you like:
apps.xmpp24.de/en/ or
xmpp.org/software/
and an provider:
providers.xmpp.net/"

#xmpp

Happy 100th birthday, President Carter! Thank you for your friendship, your fundamental decency, and your incredible acts of service through @thecartercenter. Michelle and I are grateful for all you’ve done for this country.

Vice President Harris will appear on the show, "60 Minutes," the highest-rated news program on TV, airing Oct. 7.

And although the invitation to Trump stands

Trump has turned down the offer of back-to-back conversations with both presidential nominees,
-- his campaign says he didn't want interruptions for fact checks.

Vance never said how he would make women's lives easier. He said he needs to win their trust. Think about the difference.

Tim Walz made sure the kids in his state got free lunches at school.

JD Vance made sure the kids in his state received death threats and had to be evacuated from school because of lies he told so he could pander to racist MAGAs.

Extremism always brings violence. No matter what you're pushing - ends don't justify the means. It's natural for humans to want to enact "righteous" violence. We want to be part of a group and feel like we're making the world a better place. The feeling is so enticing, we're letting ourselves slip into it. We want to be "right" about something and it feels amazing to be on the "right side" of a conflict. It's empowering, it tickles our ego, makes us feel supreme.

It's a trap of hubris. Don't.

People really want characters to do the most "logical" thing no matter how cold-blooded or out of character it would be, huh 🙄

I just published my first game on itch.io. It is called Zombowl. It is a #Halloween themed bowling audio game. If I did it right, there should also be text so that people with vision can read what is being said.

Oh hell no! Just went to the #SiriusXM app for #iOS, and I was going to try to see if a certain station was still there. I didn't find out because when I went to browse by genre I ran into... wait for it... button, one of 25, button 2 of 25... you get it. Not mused!

Something no one talks about enough:

CPU cycles aren't free.
Memory reads and writes aren't free.

That shit takes power. A miniscule amount per instance, yes, but it adds up quick if it's from an app that everyone uses constantly. All that power comes from somewhere, and right now that's mostly fossil fuels.

When people complain about software bloat, it's not just a UX problem, it's an environmental one too.

Manufacturing new computing hardware is an enormously energy and resource intensive process. Having to make hardware obsolete because the *software* isn't efficient is an absurd waste.

in reply to Mallory's Musings & Mischief

Yes! I think about this all the time. In aggregate, how much has simply making your app Electron instead of a native UI cost humanity in terms of energy and CO2? I wager that it's *vastly* more than anyone wants to consider.

Modern software is an absolute nightmare of thoughtless and absolutely unnecessary waste.

It should be legally mandated that developers can't use a machine less than ten years old.

<Begin rant>
to the people who did the TTS audio description for Stargate SG-1, would you kindly please, for the love of all that's holy in this world, finish what you've started? Like why the hell do you have certain episodes in season 3 not described, and then it goes back to audio description in season 4, but in stupidly random order. why why why?
</end rant>
in reply to Cary ✨

darn, yeah, part of me wonders if Amazon themselves had to describe it, the Vault for a long time only had like season 8-10 described which makes me think the AD script itself wasn't created until recently, my guess is these still are human-created manually rather than AI watching a show and crafting the script, at least models aren't quite that powerful yet to do frame-by-frame analysis and generate with good nuance.
in reply to Tamas G

@Tamasg yeah, I don't mind the tts descriptions at all, it's better than nothing, and I've been an SG-1 fan for as long as the show has been in existance, to find that it was audio described on prime made me extremely happy. but to know that not all episodes are described, well, that makes me extremely sad. :(

another workday is ending now, guess it's time to start settling in for this foodfight show also known as the vice-presidential debate, very interested in this one but will use TW for others when commenting about it.

I have had a lot of people ask about the test to becoming a ham radio operator, one resource is hamstudy.org/

The test is a multiple choice test, with the answers already published, plus a few simple math formulas. I have heard of people studying for a week or two and cramming the question/learning the formulas and getting their license immediately. I personally recommend getting the license FIRST before worrying about operating the radio/etc., as it's a lot easier to have a license and have someone guide you through the actual operation after you can transmit on the air.

I recently saw an IBM presentation on how AI will help eliminate COBOL once and for all. Basically, they are trying to sell a tool that uses their WatsonX cloud service to convert COBOL to Java with the help of the current buzzword named generative AI. Let me tell you, COBOL has outlasted most of the tech that was invented since 1965 and I think it will outlast generative AI, too.
in reply to nixCraft 🐧

On the one hand, translating COBOL to another programming language using an LLM is likely to lead to disastrous results.

On the other hand, I disagree about generative AI being a short-lived fad. I think there's something useful there, and after the hype and the rush to add generative AI to everything die down, that useful core will remain.

And don't get me started on Siri not being able to find music in my library with a map and both fucking hands.

the only time I tried Siri it couldn't fucking understand what I wanted, so it got the boot.

Reminds me of the Newton handwriting recognition.

@thunderbird Hi, I'm trying to test the beta and the update from k9, but I can't install k9 last beta. I tried with the apk, with obtainium (but it only shows Thinderbird beta). K9 beta will be on f-droid?
in reply to Guillermo Movia ⭐⭐⭐

The K-9 Mail beta will be coming to F-Droid! There's been a bit of a delay but both betas should be landing on F-Droid soon - and we'll be sure to announce when they're available.

My distaste for modern software design essentially boils down to corporations presuming they know how people want to use their software.
And that this lines up to the use they'd prefer.

This is essentially neo-feudalism...

Heck, it doesn't always yield a good experience! My "techie" tools don't require me to know techie details like what all the different media file-formats are, whilst my mother's "non-techie" tools do!

I'd love it if modern GUIs had scroll bars that were wider than 2px, so I could actually grab them accurately.

That is a valid activitypub document. You can add literally any other property to it and it continues to be valid. And thus we have a solution to whether we should keep or change or break or abandon activitypub. Just add that line to any message in any protocol, and now it's activitypub. Thanks to the openness and flexibility of activitypub, we can in fact have our cake and eat it, too.
