Aira ASL: On-Demand Interpreting for the Deaf Community aira.io/aira-asl-on-demand-int…

I need advice. Would anyone of you recommend getting a pie? And no, not the type you eat. I mean the computer kind of pie.
in reply to Khronos

@khronos yeah, only problem is that I would not really want a computer and a harddrive being tossed around on a plane for a couple of days. Because those package can be treated quite harshly at times
in reply to Khronos

@khronos found a price. What else would I need besides the pie itself? I kow I probably needn an enclosure, but how hard is that to set up for a blind guy?
in reply to TheFriedChip

You will need a keyboard, case and sd card. You may want to get a complete pi kit that contains most of this to make your life easier.

The Accessibility Operations Guidebook by @viscousplatypus is finally out!

Spoiler alert: I, along with many other accessibility practitioners, are quoted in and contributed to it. But don't read it for those quotes; read it because Devon is exceptionally skilled in this space and has put so much care into this book!

I've only gotten sneak peeks into this book, but I already know it will be one of the best accessibility books I'll get to read. Check it out!

Expanding Access: Introducing Aira ASL 🌱

We are excited to announce a new initiative at Aira to support the Deaf Community with on-demand ASL interpreting services. Recognizing a gap in access to interpreters in public spaces like retail stores, airports, and banks, we've developed a separate app, Aira ASL, to offer immediate and reliable interpreting without the need for advance scheduling.

By contracting with ASL service providers and using our technology platform, Aira ASL will make interpreting services seamless and easy to access, just as our existing app benefits the blind and low-vision community. This initiative aims to remove barriers and improve communication access when and where it’s needed most.

I'm working with a local charity to refurb donated laptops for them to release back into the community and they get a lot of ex-business laptops with BIOS passwords set. It's really annoying!
If you're a business IT person donating old hardware, pretty please with a cherry on top remove the BIOS passwords first xxx

If the label on your cable on the table at your house,
Says the network is connected to the button on your mouse,
But your packets want to tunnel by another protocol
That’s repeatedly rejected by the printer down the hall,
And your screen is all distorted by the side effects of gauss,
So your icons in the window are as wavy as a souse,
Then you may as well reboot and go out with a bang,
’Cause as sure as I’m a poet, the sucker’s gonna hang!

Matt Campbell reshared this.

in reply to Nick Giannak III

In the realm of servers, where things always break,
The sysadmin's life is a high-stakes mistake.
The code's looking fine, the network’s all clear,
Then suddenly… “What’s this? The disks disappear?!”

The users are clueless, they send in a shout:
“My password won’t work, can you help me out?”
They’ve tried "password123" for the hundredth time,
And blame the poor sysadmin for some server crime.

With logs on the left, and a console on the right,
They dig through the errors all day and all night.
They’ll reboot, they’ll patch, they’ll restart the thing,
And wonder why tech’s such a circus ring.

The boss comes around, “It’s running too slow!”
As if by sheer magic, it should always just go.
But deep down inside, the admin just knows,
That IT is chaos wrapped in neat rows.

Yet despite all the crashes, the bugs, and the pain,
They’ll fix it all up, then do it again.
For the sysadmin’s mantra, forever they’ll sing:
“Have you tried turning off, then on everything?”

Ah yeah, that'll be Brilliant. The day when a company tells me they can leave their UI inaccessible simply because an AI agent can interact on user's behalf anyway to push the buttons and controls through machine vision itself. Thus there's no need to add programmatic and usability changes to any interface, the person will ask their agent if it doesn't work for them. Wonderful. Let the ultimate lazyness ensue.

what’s next, encoding your text so nobody can read it?
in reply to Seirdy

I suppose it makes sense for HTML snippets containing email addresses or phone numbers. I still hate those but I kind of get it. Kind of.

plenty of fast scrapers are more than capable of doing some simple inline JS but this does clear out low-hanging fruit. It’s like changing your SSH port number: it isn’t a robust security measure but it cleans up your logs by filtering out skiddies, which is something.

Also, lesson learned. Next time a product is not performing as expected in terms of accessibility, cease using the product right away. Don't even try to use the search box or any other workarounds to get to what you want to do. Nope. Just, abandon ship. They won't hesitate to use your attempts to get it working for yourself against you.

Best I can manage for now.
"Request received: Sling TV does not offer accessible guide nor audio descriptions
We received your informal complaint – ticket number 7401450.
We will review your complaint. We will contact you if we need more information. " (at least I can take comfort in knowing that adp.acb.org/streaming.html is still accurate about this matter.)

What can I say. I'm giving up on this Sling refund. Not worth beating a dead horse. The second agent put me on a 15-minute hold whilst he spoke to his supervisor, and they concluded that there's no exceptions to the refund policy, but that they noted down my accessibility problems and concerns with the guide, playback. I pressed for the creation of a customer support ticket so at least I could know it's getting sent to a team internally but no such luck either. Maybe tomorrow will be better.
in reply to Tyler Spivey

@tspivey ah sadly got it as debit, I try to not order many things on credit cards so as to not pay it off later but in this case that one worked against me
in reply to Tamas G

@tspivey also chargebacks only tend to work if the contract expressly is breached. Unless the ocntract said it was accessible or you could find a term you could argue about, it might not work regardless
in reply to Tamas G

Ugh sorry you're dealing with that. We considered switching to a cheaper provider, but realized that Youtube TV is the most accessible despite the higher cost. OTAs are not always likely to work either. I think @morganlynn1992 mentioned there might be newer services coming down the pipeline, but not sure.
in reply to Leo

@Lprazdnik @morganlynn1992 I'm not sure, people are telling me Direct TV itself has a more accessible service which is a bit ironic. At this point you probably get a better deal going through an internet or cable provider like XFinity, but now I'm even too scared to try their service after this Sling BS. And IPTV is nice for being simple but you're risking suspensions of your IPTV and domain ceasures, neither of which are fun.
in reply to Tamas G

@Lprazdnik @morganlynn1992 the way I see it, while youtube tv is a little pricy, you do get a lot of channels, a lot of dvr space, and it is cheaper than getting cable, with a cable box.
in reply to Leo

@Lprazdnik @morganlynn1992 I do think Google has won that war from an accessibility angle but it's a pretty penny to pay $72, pretty much the price of cable TV not to mention if you pay for any other standalone streaming services. I think the market is truly fucked, I have no other word for it. No matter where you turn there's problems, it's a sad state of that world.
in reply to Tamas G

@morganlynn1992 Oh yeah. We tried XFinity's version of the streaming service, ever since switching back to them as an ISP, and it wasn't great. The app wouldn't allow Morgan to sort by channels, and the streaming box is terrible all around. So yeah, we need better options.
in reply to Tamas G

@Lprazdnik @morganlynn1992 72 dollars for cable? you only wish! I think when we had cable with the cable box, we paid 150 for the cable, and around 10 to 12 dollars for each cable box we had.
in reply to Leo

@Lprazdnik @morganlynn1992 What's the AD situation like on YouTube TV? I imagine it depends on the affiliates you have locally and if they provide audio description over the air?
in reply to Tristan

@tristan @Lprazdnik @morganlynn1992 from what I remember of it yes, but even back in 2017 or 2018 when I tried it, the local ABC for this area had it. As far as I know they also support more markets for local channels, whereas Sling is banking on their Air TV (which as I found out is also not compatible on web.) YTV will probably give AD if the closest-local market station supports it which is a huge win that way

So I never thought I'd be saying this, but I'm considering switching away from Outlook because it's not properly deleting my Gmail messages LOL. Everything that Outlook says is deleted still shows up in Gmail's All Mail folder. This doesn't happen using the native mail app in iOS. I've changed some settings in both Outlook and on Gmail's web interface, and this still seems to be occurring. Are there any alternatives out there that are simple and accessible with screenreaders? #Blind #Windows #JAWS #NVDA #A11y

Oh and @rysiek is one of my favorite people to follow on here, so click on that Follow button if you haven't already.

Problém dva, potřebujeme převoz ležáka do hospicu.
Hospic říká, že to musí vyžádat lékař. Zkoušíme zase lékaře, ten nadiktuje 10 čísel ať si to obvoláme sami.

Obvoláme 10 čísel, nikde nás nevezmou.

Tzn ani zítra se do hospicu nedostanem. Další den bude trpět doma. Stav se zhoršil rychle, na tohle nejsme vybavení.
