Well that was fun, breaking my Linux install by trying to get Gnome3 on it instead of Mate. Orca broke so bad, OMG, it could barely cough. Everything read as "main stage window" and "overview panel" with no arrowing, tabbing working, run dialog was all strange, bleh. What the heck. How can Mate just work but Gnome 3 not. How how how! I even tried it with Xserver and Wayland both. Xserver was the one where it read "main stage" with Wayland things were mostly silent. Wow just wow. Also with Wayland there was a delay in getting the accessibility stack online within Mate too, Orca turns on, nothing speaks for about 20 seconds after and until then you're left wondering what's going on around you and why your speech is all weird. Youch youch. Linux, today, you got me again. Thank GAWD for that 31 GB back-up I made of the image last night with Tuba and all of it installed, thank heavens.

so like, on one hand, I am OK with Debian's connservative stance for packages. Why update them often when there's a chance they can break other packages with it? On the other I'm like, "but you stupid Debian, just, get newer shit, it's holding you back from being better!" Maybe I didn't update my AT-SPI-bridge from 2.5.6? Is it too old for Gnome3? what the heck. I just can't get passed wanting to figure this out. Ugh. FML.

@alexhall
huh, question for you lovely people,
are you all installing vie UEFI?
or legacy bios boot or non csm?
got my first machine that has UEFI and i'm booted in to legacy mode.
never used a UEFI beast before in regards installing new oss.
anything I aught to be aware of?
yes i can get in to the boot menu it's a dell inspine 5567
i've herd good things about gnome, will try it out myself fedora 43 beta iso has a quite accessible annaconda web installer now.
fedora 42, last time I tryed that via the mate spin, it was not at all accessible.
so had to download fedora 39 mate spin install that then upgrade upwords from one release to the next till I hit f42
what A pain in the arse that was.
would not recomend!

@andrew @mhussain @alexhall that's the thing, I've also been hearing though that some distro Disks have the older 2013 shim that has now been revoked, that is, there's a cert that MS revoked and renewed and some newer UEFI systems which have this cert as the valid one will complain about the pre-2013 cert. Haven't had this happen on my 2023-2024 era machines thankfully yet, but something to be aware of. Rufus now complains if your ISO on the USB has the now-revoked bootloader cert.

We replaced @mozilla Firefox’s QUIC UDP I/O stack with a modern memory-safe implementation using quinn-udp. Instead of limited and dated system calls like sendto and recvfrom, Firefox now uses modern OS specific system calls across all major platforms, resulting in HTTP/3 QUIC throughput improvements when CPU bound, and enabling QUIC ECN support across all major platforms.

in reply to daniel:// stenberg://

@bagder to avoid any confusion, Firefox still uses its own QUIC library, namely github.com/mozilla/neqo. Instead of implementing our own UDP I/O logic, we now depend on and contribute to Quinn's UDP library, i.e. quinn-udp (github.com/quinn-rs/quinn/tree…).

Same exact issue Jayz encountered with his Bazzite installation (at the end of the video). An rpm-ostree / bootc bug it seems.

Found someone's recovery steps from on Fedora's Discourse under a post of this issue. Either that, or back things up and reinstall the whole thing it seems.

anyone has time for and would be up for hacking the pocket reform panel data into this (to get EDK2 going for pocket reform rk3588)? github.com/edk2-porting/edk2-r…

for display v2, the init seq can be copied from here: source.mnt.re/reform/reform-de…

and timings from here: source.mnt.re/reform/reform-de…

Is there a specific reason you're interested in getting EDK2 *with display support* running on the Pocket Reform? Putting resources into that seems problematic to me, because a visual UI in the boot environment will probably not be accessible to blind users, unless one also adds audio drivers and a screen reader. I think it's better for the boot loader to boot into a real OS with a full UI stack as simply and reliably as possible, with no UI in the boot loader itself.

Linux. What a beast. I don't get why for some on a virtual machine, Debian speech goes away in the installer. Never had this happen on my real, physical machine. What could a VM have or do that the real machine doesn't? Ugh. I've now backed up the external SSD I'm booting it off of, that way I won't have to reinstall again, but yes, pressing S once at boot (you'll know cause your fans will rev down after hitting S) you should hear Speakup, go through your soundcards, press enter when you hear the right one, or (more reliably) type the number of it and then enter. Sometimes enter alone wouldn't work for me. It's sadly one of the few distros that got this right, and they do configure both Espeakup and Orca for you on your user session, so nice. Debian's downfall really is the ancient packages, and it'll always be that. Archlinux is great but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone but the most advanced who's OK with rolling releases and config changes. Debian's packages are newer-ish today, but they'll go out of style way before the LTS timeline is up.

@mntmn Prompted by the release of the Raspberry Pi 500+, I wonder if you've ever considered doing a Reform variant in that retro desktop form factor, i.e. the computer inside a keyboard with no pointing device or display. If it were battery-powered and had a built-in speaker like the Reform laptops, that would even be a complete usable and portable computer for blind people.

2019 and 2020 were fucking wild. There were global protests. Americans were fighting with the National Guard in the streets. They were burning down police stations and chased the US president into a bunker. The government was just mailing checks to people. Millions of people suddenly weren’t going to work and didn’t have to pay rent or student loans. Everyone got a taste of how radically different life could be and how powerful we could be together.

And then Joe Biden said “actually let’s just reset to exactly the way things were before and not fundamentally change the system that brought us to this point” and people wonder why we ended up with fascism.
