Doctors in China have used lab-grown insulin-producing cells to treat a woman with type 1 diabetes. The cells were made from her own tissue, reprogrammed into stem cells, and then grown into tiny clusters that release insulin. A year after the transplant, her blood sugar remains normal without medication. It’s the first time in history that a person with type 1 diabetes has been freed from insulin injections using cells made from their own body. cell.com/cell/fulltext/S0092-8…

Warning: Very long sentimental post.

TL:DR Small acts can have huge impacts if you're kind to people. Sometimes you don't know how much difference you make, but being nice is a superpower.

======================================

Support the younglings!

I have a super creative, super intelligent, deeply caring and thoughtful autistic person in my life; one of my children.

I introduced them to a ton of different music just by being around it. I also introduced them to a way to make music, via a computer, even though I barely knew how myself, when they were 8. They ran with it and now it's their life (I have a separate origin story but thats for another time).

The point of this post is to highlight how community and small acts of support can build confidence in people, allowing them to be themselves.

I learnt of a music project in 2017, The Dark Outside, where musicians and audio artists would submit music/sounds never heard before, to be transmitted over FM radio in a 24 hour broadcast in a remote forest in Scotland. To listen in, people would have to go to the site with a radio. People did. Well known artists rubbed shoulders with complete novices, beamed out into dark Scottish forest to weirdos who made the effort to go and listen.

We submitted a tune, when the Eldest was 13, which was accepted and broadcast. A few months later the organiser, Stuart, asked if his record label could use the track on a compilation tape. Alongside amazing musicians, including some members of Mogwai, who we loved. Amazing. We said yes, of course.

I'm going to take a pause for context now. The Eldest was very much a 13 year old outsider in an all boys secondary school. Undiagnosed autistic in a harsh environment. Bullied, no easy way of putting it, heartbreaking as a parent.

Back to nicer things. It became apparent that Cosi Fanny Tutti (of Throbbing Gristle and a further illustrious career) had a copy of the tape! On their SoundCloud account proper music heads had followed (in particular Clair from Hotgem music who is a star ❤️). This made a bullied kid feel seen.

We had been going to an annual electronic music festival in London, BPM, which had a lot of very reputable artists playing in historic churches in the city. What was nice was the vibe. The artists hung around and listened to each other, not just in and out. Plaid, Luke Vibert, B12, Daedalus, Mira Calix, Lorraine James and many more.

At 14, a kid who was a bullied outsider at school just walked up to Daedalus and dived into a conversation about their set and musical theories generally. The Eldest saw themselves as a contemporary and Daedalus treated them the same way. Not patronising, genuine. He was genuinely delighted at the feedback he got too. A lovely man.

Related. I have been a lifelong fan of Black Dog/Plaid. Massively. The Eldest too, through my love of them. They played RPM twice. The first time I took the Eldest to say hello, we had a chat, nice. The next year, Stuart (from the Dark Outside as mentioned above) had sent them the Eldest's music and they got to talk about it in person 🤯. Plaid (specifically Andy) sent us the stems of their, then, unreleased single to remix and play with. Amazing and generous. Imagine, chatting with your musical heroes at 14 about your work, and them sending you their unreleased raw material to play around with!

One last thing. The Eldest submitted a track called Dawn for The Dark Outside, broadcast in 2019. They were 15 at the time. In a change of location it was transmitted from Elizabeth the Firsts hunting lodge in Epping forest, near where we live. We were able to go along and tune in, alongside others. The event was heavily supported by The Quietus, an online culture site (if you don't know about it look it up, it's the best), so much so that Luke Turner, founder and chief editor, was manning the operation overnight.

I was a long time supporter and fan of The Quietus, I actually received a copy of his autobiography for Christmas which I hadn't yet read. As the sun was setting over the forest Luke wandered over and struck up a conversation with us. We explained the Eldest's tune was being broadcast at some point, then it came on, a Vangellis sounding track as the sun dipped behind the forest. When it finished there were cheers, close by and in the distance from listener's in the forest. Luke congratulated the Eldest and said it was great.

Magic moment. True story. Went back to being nobody loser on Monday morning at school.

They had a real moment of respect and awe with a grown up, an intellectual person of note on Wednesday, but on Monday it was pure bully shit again from idiots.

If you made it this far down bless you. All true.

The point is. Lift up the younglings. Give them your time, wisdom and understanding. Small things are huge sometimes.

Not just them. Encourage all people always.

It's never too late if you don't shut the gate!

Tap water doesn't contain fluoride everywhere, here for example it's natural levels (no idea how much that is). Where they have fluoride, it's about 1.5 to 2 times less than what a pea-sized amount of toothpaste would contain, as far as the concentration goes. So water has a very low, diluted concentration. These are based on the optimal levels, and concentrations may vary.

Prozac does not have fluoride, but rather fluoxetine, which has fluorine atoms, these are not fluorides.

I guess they get away with it because it has benefits, the same way chlorine has in all the cleaning products it's in.

Cafe Zoetrope, San Francisco

"Many other musicians and musical groups were allowed to utilize this studio, including the Grateful Dead."

"Francis Ford Coppola bought the building in 1972 to be the headquarters for his production company, American Zoetrope. A number of his films including the Godfather II and III, Apocalypse Now, The Conversation, One From The Heart, The Outsiders, and Dracula were written, edited, or sound mixed within these walls."

I have no idea what I just read but I think this is what AI induced psychosis looks like and for the love of god please arrest him for the crime he starts off by confessing to which could have literally killed someone. It should not be hard since he confesses, admits he knows its dangerous and stupid, and includes photos of himself committing it.

New blog post: "The fate of 'small' open source" nolanlawson.com/2025/11/16/the…

Some meandering thoughts on writing open source when LLMs can do a lot of the same thing. I don't have all the answers, but I'm trying to ask the right questions anyway.

Remember, there will not be an episode of Sonic Synergy tonight, it will air tomorrow after the Digital Domain. On said Digital Domain...There's plenty of talk about Bob's birthday party last Friday, including episodes of 'Me, Myself, and Chip'. But what ironic information did @nick learn there?

7 PM EST tomorrow!

Together with @forgejo, we will have a presence at #FOSDEM 2026! (Thanks @fosdem!)

FOSDEM will take place in Brussels between 2026-01-31 and 2026-02-01—it is the largest European conference on free and open-source software and the admission is free (as in beer).

Just like last year's FOSDEM, we will be running a stand, exchanging stickers and having delightful conversations. If you find anyone wearing a badge of either project's logo, feel free to say hi. :D

I just wrote something where I talked about a housing co-op that I helped start, where some things nicely came together so that it was successful, and, more generally, how we tend to succeed at things or not for a variety of reasons. mikegorse.substack.com/p/what-…

I have a big interrogation about @xmpp
I've seen recommended multiple times the OTR encryption protocol, it looks better than simple OpenPGP.
But I see it rarely implemented and on the wiki it says not toeimplement it but with no reason and I cannot find why.
wiki.xmpp.org/web/XMPP_E2E_Sec…
So, what happened to OTR ? And why shouldn't we use it ?

I had an epiphany yesterday.

I spend so much time trying to escape from this terrible world we live in right now.

I reminded myself that all the "escapes" are the product of the same world, the same 14 billion years of history and evolution. The same species that's causing a mass extinction event due to greed; that's ruled by wealthy, white nationalist, performative Christofascists; that's perpetrated countless genocides also created every work of art; every poem, play, and novel; every movie; every video game; every medical miracle and scientific advance. We've put people on the moon and landed ships on other planets. We know the speed of light and what black holes look like.

I have to remember that being under a hateful regime doesn't necessarily mean that everyone is hateful. It's not one or the other, it's not all our nothing.

There are kind, thoughtful people out there right now who are thinking up the next thing that will bring us together and give us peace. There are people who would love and accept you. There are writers, artists, musicians, coders, scientists, etc doing good work. Yes, there are terrible, short-sighted, people who think little of others, but they are not all people even if they are often the loudest.

I have to remember that what I see, what those in power want me to see, are the things that support their narrative. It's why they want genAI so badly: it lets them churn out propaganda at an unholy rate. But it is propaganda, not reality.

If you live in the United States (or the UK) and are non-white, non-male, non-hetero, non-cis, non-neuerotypical, non-ablebodied, or non-"Christian", the government wants you and everyone else to believe you are less than human.

You are not.

I am not.

The government is lying. They are wrong. I can't fix it. You probably can't fix it. We can at least find each other and support each other, remind us that we are not alone and that we matter.

You matter.

El Español:
«El IVA de la vivienda con Feijóo será del 4% para "jóvenes de hasta 40 años" y se pagará en los mismos plazos que la hipoteca»

Joder! Parece una buena iniciativa!

O no? Veamos.

Entonces, a quién beneficia?

A good #Caturday to the #CatsOfMastodon, and the #FediCats , and all y'all who celebrate!

We need to rehome some of our kitties because my partner and I are both experiencing health challenges that are both costly and impacting our ability to adequately care for all our kitties.

I have no idea how to go about this. We have ten cats right now. In no particular order (and little alt-text, as I'll describe in the posts—I can't add more than four pics). We're in the Houston metro area, kinda near where 290 comes off 610. My partner used to know folks who did this, but not currently.

The front cats. There's a door between the kitchen and other public areas and the rest of the house. It stays closed.

Spike: He's in his late teens. He's incredibly shy and distrustful of strangers. He's a white and gray tabby, but with a white area on his back (not visable). He stays

Kitsune: I call her Kiki. She's a 13-
yo calico who will accept attention from anyone, so long as you don't try to pick her up. She stays.

Freya: She likes to sleep on a cat bed in the front window. Entirely white except for tiny black dot on her nose. She used to bully Squirrel, and would be okay as an only cat or as an addition to a household, as she was an addition.I believe she was born in 2019, and littered young. Her kittens went to forever homes before I moved in. She's waving friends with both Spike and Star—they greet each other by batting at each other for a bit. She's available by herself.

The Interns: These three were born in January, 2020, in a cat enclosure on my stepdaughter's porch. There was a fourth who didn't make it. Their mother wa TNR, and, due to quarantine they ended up staying.

Star: She was named because she's entirely black with small groups of white hairs that resemble a starfield. She is super friendly with people. She has recurring ear issues. When she's dealing with that she over-grooms, and we support her with special gooshy. She would be available with Squirrel as a pair.

Squirrel: She's a chonky bullseye brown tabby with a bobbed tail that her mother must have bitten off by accident. She is afraid of everything and everyone, though she will sometimes join Kitsune and Weasel in my lap. She is available with any of Star, Weasel, or Squeaker, or with Star and Weasel as a trio.

Weasel: She used to climb into the dishwasher and lick at the dishes when I was loading it. She's the mackerel brown tabby in the picture with Kitsune, Star, and Spike. She will use her paw to move her treats bowl away from interlopers. She has a unique raw element to her meows, and prefers being near my feet when I'm in the recliner. She's available with Squirrel or as a trio including Star.

The Backsters:

Noodle: She's a tortoimese. The photo where her eye looks like a laser captures her personality best. She was rescued at fourish months, and hid in a ramen noodle box. I am her human, and she is finally accepting attention from my partner (we moved in in February, 2020). She didn't meow or play until I adopted Fur Elise. She stays.

Fur Elise: She likes laundry and little catnip mice. If you throw one of her meeses, she'll chase it and pounce on it. She's large, and a very dark gray tabby. She stays for Noodle.

Squeaker: He's an ambassador, and would be happy with the frontsters or the backsters. We had to restrict him to the back because he needs Hill's prescription c/d urinary diet. As an accommodation, we cut the Hill's kibble with the non-prescription ProPlan urinary support kibble, and free-feed all the backsters. He's not a gooshy eater, which may be why he developed the crystals. He squeaks instead of meowing (although he yowls when he's in the carrier on the way to/from the vet). our youngest, and was born iv the summer of 2022. He's available with Squirrel or Ma Ma Ma, or by himself if he's moving in with other cats. He absolutely gets along with every cat here.

Ma Ma Ma; Her meow sounds more like she's saying, "Mah! Mah! Mah!' She's very pretty, and the pic I have is her on the top of a bookshelf, with my unshaded warm LED lamp shining up at her. Noodle and Ma Ma Ma are frenemies; if I'm petting one, the other will casually wander up and interpose herself. She is available with Squeaker or alone.
