Apple has declared the 2013 MacBook used for Snikket iOS development to be too old to run the latest dev tools 🙄

This means we're temporarily unable to push iOS app updates, but we're working on getting a replacement.

If anyone has a spare MacBook lying around that they could donate (ideally M1, to test running the app natively), send a DM our way!

Alternatively, just 50 new Liberapay donors at €0.25/wk would help cover the cost of purchasing a used one locally ❤️

@kev Have you tried the steps in this blog post: nvaccess.org/post/in-process-2… and / or has it changed since then? The Windows 11 one is slightly different to that so I might need to write a new post about that one :)
in reply to Kevan

@kev If you'd like the dialog designed differently, I'm afraid you'll need to ask Microsoft to change it. We can only read what they expose to us. The standard view uses a non-standard type of table / list thing, which isn't fully accessible, which is why we suggested using the details view in the first place. The details view shows a table, so the table navigation commands will let you navigate between cells like other tables. You can use arrows to get between rows if you prefer.

@amir @kev When I press control+shift+escape, NVDA reports that it's opened the task manager after about 800ms (this is about the time it takes to open and populate visually anyway). It doesn't read the first process automatically, you are right, but that is because Windows doesn't put the focus on the first item. This is why when you press down arrow, the focus moves TO the first item, not to the second, as you would expect if it was already on the first item). 1/2
in reply to Amir has moved

@amir @kev I wondered if it was because I was using an alpha build (I know we've put in some improvements overall) but I just installed 2023.1 and got 673ms to open, then down arrow through the first five options took 116, 56, 60, 85, 69 ms, so, if anything faster. Lenovo laptop with i7, 16gb RAM, Win 11 64-bit, etc, so yes, a good machine too, but I would expect lag in a slower machine to be as much (or more) in how long task manager takes to respond rather than NVDA reporting the change?
in reply to Kevan

@kev @amir I set my log level to "debug", and in the log it will record something like this for a downArrow keypress and the associated speech:

IO - inputCore.InputManager.executeGesture (16:37:48.756) - winInputHook (24496):
Input: kb(desktop):downArrow
IO - speech.speech.speak (16:37:48.826) - MainThread (28064):
Speaking [LangChangeCommand ('en_GB'),...

In this case, the hour, minute and second are all the same so 826 - 756 = 70ms in this case

in reply to Kevan

@kev @amir Yep, for the most part, you can leave it at "info", but for timing things like keypresses higher levels can be handy (note that those higher levels do record keystrokes, so we recommend leaving it at info when you don't need it higher - not that your NVDA log is ever sent anywhere (and NVDA only keeps the log for the current and previous instances)
in reply to Dave Taylor

@davetaylor2112 @kev Just picking up on the one I can respond to there: "if it's not on Github, it doesn't get fixed" - this is correct, because GitHub gives us one centralised place to record and prioritise issues. If you do report something here AND give me enough detail AND / OR I can replicate it, I'm happy to write it up myself - although the advantage of having reported it on GitHub yourself is that you will be notified when a fix gets implemented (or if any clarification is needed)
in reply to NV Access

@davetaylor2112 @kev Also back on the original issue, we do have several around the task manager, such as github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issue… and github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issue… - so it is something we are tracking ourselves, and I know we've raised it with Microsoft as well.
in reply to Dave Taylor

@davetaylor2112 @kev Because I offered to write up an issue myself if you gave me enough info to do it? I'm not sure how that makes us out of touch? In order to report an issue with ANY piece of software anywhere in the world, you need to be able to say what isn't working, what do you think it should do, and how can I replicate the problem myself. I'm not sure what more you want here? I'm even responding on here within a few minutes. But please, tell me again how out of touch I am? :)
in reply to Dave Taylor

@davetaylor2112 @kev A lot of people say that about GitHub (that it's hard to use), but no-one has ever clarified what is hard about it? Yes the template has a lot in it but only because it's broken down into smaller questions to try to get all the information needed in the first instance. In the end though, it comes down to those three points I made earlier - what is happening? What do you think SHOULD be happening? And how can I replicate it? 1/2
in reply to Dave Taylor

@davetaylor2112 @kev We're working on that. When the new add-on store comes out in NVDA 2023.2 you will be able to override the compatibility check - note that won't make an add-on which is actually incompatible work, but it will help with add-ons which are compatible but haven't been tested by the author. We put some info on the add-on store in our last In-Process blog post: nvaccess.org/post/in-process-1…
in reply to Dave Taylor

@davetaylor2112 @kev I do agree with that. There's a conversation on GitHub (yes GitHub, I know) where I just raised this for you: github.com/nvaccess/nvda/discu…
in reply to Kevan

@kev @davetaylor2112 I don't know of many sites you can submit something like that WITHOUT having an account. Want to report an issue to Microsoft? Log into your Microsoft account & use the Feedback Hub. Firefox? Create an account on Bugzilla & off you go. Chrome? Just log into your Google account & let's do it! There may be some you don't need an account for, but they're in the minority, and GitHub is one of the largest sites of its kind so a lot of paritcularly open-source projects use it.
in reply to NV Access

@kev @davetaylor2112 Speaking of submitting issues, I just submitted this one github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issue…
in reply to Dave Taylor

@davetaylor2112 @kev Also, re the original gibberish Kevin reported navigating task manager - the issue isn't that WE don't use Windows, the issue is that the people who wrote task manager haven't tested with a screen reader :) NVDA only reports what prorgrams or Windows pass on to us. In some cases, it makes less sense than others. In a case like this we would first try to get Microsoft to fix their interface, but otherwise we might try to streamline what NVDA reports
in reply to Dave Taylor

@davetaylor2112 @kev The default "more details" screen for task manager displays more info than NVDA can read, yes, but that's why we recommend using the "details" screen if you want that info: nvaccess.org/post/in-process-2…

#AudioMo: Here's a clip from #NottingHillCarnival 2005, when my house was within the boundary of the event.
Every year I would hang microphones out of my bedroom window for the two days, set up a live-stream and let it rip.
I captured all sorts of goodness from huge crowds to sound system Rampage doing their thing, from fights with police and thrown bottles from the more shall we say, inebriated crew to the people who were there to have fun.
In this recording you can hear a passing band of drummers going down the road next to mine. They never come down my street, which is why this recording is off to the left but it's a lovely sound of good, live energy anyway.

I've made a video talking about the current and future state of my YouTube channel.

If you wonder why I didn't publish any videos in the past months, this video explains it as well.

Welcome, Stitcher users!

I started Overcast ten years ago in large part because I was afraid of Stitcher taking over the market with its proprietary walled garden (which was even more walled at the time, and was gaining significant traction).

I wanted to ensure that the open world of podcasting survived and thrived, even when faced with strong proprietary threats.

The names and players have changed since then, and the battle continues, but open podcasting remains dominant and healthy today.

The Supreme Court rejected the Independent State Legislature theory.

It was an unhinged theory, particularly because

(1) the Constitution specifically allows Congress to regulate federal elections.

(2) it allowed state Legislatures to ignore state Constitutions.

nbcnews.com/politics/supreme-c…

The majority on this court is far right wing (with a few nutso justices) but it has limits.

One example: The Court didn't go along with Trump's election fraud nonsense and hand him the election.

Really happy to see these results on the perception of googlers on quality of the #Rust development experience, an area I'm highly passionate about. I'd like to take this as an opportunity to encourage the 9% (and the other 91% as well) to file tickets when we don't meet the bar we've set for ourselves.

Mozilla: "In a well-intentioned yet dangerous move to fight online fraud, France is on the verge of forcing browsers to create a dystopian technical capability. It would force browser providers to create the means to mandatorily block websites present on a government provided list. Such a move will overturn decades of established content moderation norms and provide a playbook for authoritarian governments"

You don't have to use Mastodon through an app!

Every server has its own website where you can log in and use all its features. The web interface is excellent, and it usually gets the latest features before the apps do.

Your server's website address will usually be the same as its name, for example the website for the server kind.social is at kind.social

The website works on both computers and phones. (If you're using the phone version, click # to see the search box.)
