Lately, not an hour goes by without someone asking me about what infosec.exchange is “doing about Threads”. There’s a lot of mis- and dis-information running around the fediverse as of late about Threads beginning to federate, along with some legitimate concerns. This post is not about my personal views, but rather my plans for Threads and some instructions.

At the moment, Threads.net is silenced (aka limited) on infosec.exchange. That means that infosec.exchange accounts won’t see threads.net posts or accounts, and threads.net accounts can’t follow infosec.exchange accounts without approval of the person being followed. This gives people the ability to search for a threads.net account and bypass the warning to follow them. From there, it is like interacting with any other fediverse account. That works fine for now as there are not many threads.net accounts exposed to the fediverse, but it doesn’t scale very well for people who want to interact with threads.net accounts in the future.

The big picture plan for threads.net on infosec.exchange is this:

  1. Silence threads.net – done
  2. Enable the authorized_fetch feature on infosec.exchange to prevent the normal flow of posts from accounts blocking threads.net to Threads’ users and systems – done (note: this in no way prevents people, including Threads, from accessing your public posts. Public posts are public and can be accessed via the web site directly, RSS, and and so on.)
  3. Encourage people who do not want to interact with threads.net or have their posts visible to Threads’ users to block the domain threads.net. – This post is kicking off that campaign. See below for instructions.
  4. Create a new instance (name will either be infosec.space or infosec.cafe, still deciding) that will fully block threads.net. This should be completed by Jan 1, 2024
  5. Encourage infosec.exchange members who are not comfortable with other infosec.exchange users interacting with threads.net to migrate to the new instance or to some other instance that fully blocks theads.net. This campaign will start once the new instance is available.
  6. Remove the threads.net silence/limit on infosec.exchange. This will happen 60 days after step 5.

Q&A

Q: I think you are a terrible person not blocking threads.

A: I am sorry it didn’t work out between us. I am but an imperfect human trying my best to navigate a complicated world. There are other instances that may be more to your liking.

Q: Will the new instance block instances that don’t block threads.net?

A: I do not currently see value in this beyond being punitive to other instances, so no, there are no current plans to do that.

Q: I’ve been told that instances will collapse once threads starts federating. Aren’t you worried about that?

A: I worry about many things. This isn’t one of them. For sound technical reasons.

Q: What if no one wants to use your new instance or what if everyone leaves infosec.exchange due to your poor decision making?

A: I save a lot of time and money.

Q: What happens when $terribleaccount on threads.net starts harassing people?

A: I will block the account, just like I do today.

Q: Aren’t you worried about the moderation of threads.net?

A: Not really. I get to deal with problematic instances and problematic people all day, every day. If it gets to be too much, I’ll reassess.

Q: How do I block threads.net on my account?

A: This is how:

These instructions are how to block threads.net via a web browser. Some mobile apps also expose this feature and some don’t, and I don’t really have the ability to create instructions for the 20+ different mobile apps.

Step 1 – search for threads.net
13558
Step 2 – Select a threads.net account:
499457
Step 3 – Click on the menu next to the account name in the profile view:
499459
Step 4 – block the domain
499461
That’s it.

I'm absurdly excited to learn that 2024 = 2³+3³+4³+5³+6³+7³+8³+9³.

...and it's because:

2025 = 45², and

45=1+2+⋯+9, and

(1+⋯+𝑛)²=1³+⋯+𝑛³ !

Moin @ADFC_Hamburg @CriticalMassHamburg @VCDNord – kanntet ihr schon mapcomplete.org/ghostbikes.htm… ?

in reply to Pietervdvn

For example, the #cycling #association (#Fietsersbond) in #Brugge did measure the widths of all the streets in the old city center. There is a rule in the Belgian road code which says that a car needs to leave at least one meter of room when overtaking a bicycle. We also have a special traffic sign, making this explicit. This is the result: mapcomplete.org/width?z=14.3&l…
in reply to Pietervdvn

This is neat! In our place the rule is even 1.5m clearance for overtaking within city boundaries and 2m on country roads. But that‘s pure theory, as most car drivers don‘t know or care about this rule. (And we don’t have an official sign for it.)

As to #FOSS here, I know about (though have never used) the openbikesensor.org hardware that measures these distances in real life. Also very interesting!

@ADFC_Hamburg @CriticalMassHamburg @VCDNord @MapComplete

in reply to Parents For Future Hamburg

About the legal distance: if you measure the street width, one can easily adjust the rendering to show different colours.
The openBikeSensor is cool, but quite unactionable data sadly.

Btw, the Belgian Cycling Association has a 'measurement bicyle' for cycling infrastructure: fietsersbond.be/meetfiets

Remember that #PlayStore wanted to update/replace a bunch of apps installed from other sources such as #FDroid recently? Well, turns out someone found what triggers it and how it can be avoided, see github.com/jamie-mh/Authentica… for details.

Basically, the reason there was that AABs (the #Android App Bundles uploaded to Play) had a higher versionCode than the APKs distributed by the other sources. Still does not explain why Google ignored the "installer" property, though.

I found an extremely interesting and fun #Mac #app called #soundpaste. The idea is that you watch a video and if you hear something interesting you press the hotkey at the beginning of this thing and then you press the hotkey again and the audio is automatically copied to your CLipboard, ready to paste in Protools or whatever other DAW. It can record system audio without system driver, so that's a plus.

LOUD NOISE!
I have a USB audio interface that connects to a Raspberry Pi. The input is an RJ45, which connects to a communications microphone with PTT. It outputs to a 3.5mm mono TS jack, and is powered by USB. It has an integrated amplifier for driving a passive speaker.
For some reason, if you disconnect it, the following fun noise occurs.

Okay, listen up:

Mozilla is two different entities. The Mozilla Corporation and the Mozilla Foundation. The second one? That's the social good one you really want focused on important things.

The Mozilla Foundation, like all non-profits, publishes their Form 990 annually to disclose compensation. Here it is.

You'll see that the top earner there, Mitchell Baker, who is very handsomely rewarded, is actually paid by the Mozilla Corporation, not the Foundation. Put another way, the non-profit is not blowing its funding on a CEO.

And the corp, by the way, is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Foundation. It exists to generate additional revenue for the Foundation. That's a good thing too, because donations alone won't cover operating expenses.

The annual report of the Foundation shows a pretty healthy financial situation, and increased investment in public good projects year-over-year.

I don't like everything they do either (e.g. that risible website generator), but I don't actually think they are suffering from a lack of focus. They're suffering from a mature market.
