#TIL SMB (whose most famous implementation might be Samba) is a little-endian network protocol.

It was originally develloped in 1983 at IBM and the first Microsoft version seems to date back 1987 (for OS/2), so I guess Big Tech is to blame.

TIL that Limp Bizkit got a letter and a fruit basket from the World Trade Center, congratulating them on their VMA win and thanking them for featuring the Twin Towers in the Rollin' video. The next day, the towers were destroyed in the 9/11 attacks.

TIL that Foot Binding, the practice of breaking and binding a woman's feet to change its shape and size, was once so widespread in China that it was estimated in the 19th century that 40~50% of all Chinese women had bound feet. Among upper class Han Chinese women, the figure was almost 100%.

#TIL If you use #ClaudeCode, you can start your terminal session with `claude --resume`, and Claude will pop up a list of your recent conversations which you can scroll a select the one you want to continue. Convenient! #AI

My @thunderbird regularly marks some S/MIME-signed mails with:

"Digital Signature is not valid!"

#TIL the reason: these mails are signed with sha1-algorithm which is considered insecure since TB 115.

There is a config to accept such signatures, see blog.thunderbird.net/2023/10/t…

However, I think the error message:

"There are unknown problems with this digital signature." is suboptimal.

Seems like an easy issue to fix, but on the other hand I was not even able to finde the appropriate repo. 😬

#TIL that #Thunderbird lets me set #filters to move an #email to a particular place *when* I archive it, rather than immediately! So I can still read the emails as they come in, and then hit "archive" to have them automagically filed away 📁️

There are other triggers too, besides "as soon as the email comes in" and "when I archive" that I haven't explored yet. Thunderbird rocks! :thunderbird: ✨️

#TIL There is a solution called @yunohost. It's kind of an environment that allows you to install lots of apps. And my main insight was: there are LOTS of open-source web apps for everything. If I have enough time, I will definitely test many of them and document their #accessibility. I do remember struggling with some of them definitely, but some (like #NextCloud and #Miniflux) are decent. Here is their catalog: apps.yunohost.org/catalog

#TIL I learned that German cities used to have a "Bettelvogt" or "Armenvogt" - a minor official whose job was it to "control the behavior" of beggars and other poor people.

They were explicitly tasked to _control_ beggars, and not help them in any way. Which just goes to show that shitty behavior towards poor people by the authorities was well-established long before the advent of #LateStageCapitalism .
