What are some of the biggest accessibility fails you found on a website where the people building the site wanted to do something good but actually made the situation worse, e.g. by using verbose alt texts, overusing ARIA, etc.?
in reply to Manuel MatuzoWitch 🧙‍♀️

@svenja Forms that speak the number of characters that have been written, and the number of characters that remained, with every keypress.

Curioso que la Xunta se haya planteado implantar discriminación positiva en favor de los hombres y lo haya llevado a una mesa de negociación.
in reply to modulux

discriminación positiva en favor de los hombres? Donde se necesita tal?
in reply to Juan CBS

Pues según la Xunta en los procesos selectivos de funcionarios. Los sindicatos dijeron que ni de coña y se retiró la brillante idea.

Finland approved mining exploration in Sámi territory without assessing its cultural impact or gaining Sámi consent.

Sámi sisters led the case, arguing that traditional governance structures were ignored.

UN ruled Finland must amend its laws to recognize Sámi collective land rights and fully implement free, prior and informed consent.

“Sustainability is an empty word if you don’t respect and implement Indigenous rights here in our homelands.”

Current status: Setting up a bunch of scheduled tasks on my machines while i'm away so I don't lose the remote links. Restart screenreader every hour, restart entire machine every day ... one thing I'm not sure how to do is to force a reboot if the system goes down somehow...
in reply to Florian

can you set something up with wake on LAN? If you don't have an internal battery you could withdraw power for a fixed period when the machine is ordinarily off such that if it's crashed it'll die. Might end up stuck in a boot loop, I suppose.
in reply to Sean Randall

@cachondo how'd I trigger it from afar though? I thought there were KVM switches that did this but i haven't found anything yet... could supposedly set it up so I can send a shutdown /r /f command from a still running machine but that'd only work if the machine is still aware enough to receive that command

there is now a stand-alone app in the Windows App Store called Apple Devices. It works very well with screen readers and allows you to make a full encrypted backup.

#Naev #Accessibility #Blind #Game #Development - Hi. These guys would like to make their game accessible for us. Do me a personal favour, jump on the topic and bring in your individual expertise. Wether you are a coder, audio designer or just an ordinary blind player who knows about the mechanics needed for an accessible game, jump in and help us. I whent to their #Discord server and just asked, if there is a chance, making the game accessible at all. and now, see, they put up the Github proposal. Would like to see this really happen.

GRRR. I keep hitting f2 to edit Slack messages and failing.
in reply to Sean Randall

I've been suggesting this for years. F2 does work to edit cells in their new Lists feature (which unfortunately has quite a few outstanding accessibility problems), so maybe there's now a stronger case for it on messages as well.

@jscholes you can hit e in the list to edit, though, i didn't realise that. I thought e worked in the context menu.

Hi there,
I'd like to share an invitation for blind people from all over Europe here. My eastGerman Hometown Chemnitz is going to be one of the European cultural Capitals next year. The citty is also a center of blind life in east Germany, so 3 of our blind organizations decided to organize a long weekend from 29th of Ma'y to 1st of June for blind Europeans to explore our citty together. You can find more infos here:

In the debate about whether AI / LLMs can reason or not it's good to remember this quote from 1984 from Dijkstra , a dutch computer scientist,
""The question of whether Machines Can Think... is about as relevant as the question of whether Submarines Can Swim."

I have a question for people who work in accessibility and design:

Can anyone recommend evidence-based sources on how well Comic Sans does or doesn't work for people with dyslexia?

- I don't need anecdotes, opinions, or big feelings about fonts.
- I'm just looking for evidence-based studies.

I've seen strong, contradictory opinions & a lot of received wisdom about this. That's why I'm looking for actual evidence either way. Thank you!

Related question: I'm familiar with Atkinson Hyperlegible. the Braille Institute Free Font (link at the bottom.

If accessibility-oriented fonts make a difference for you as a reader (for dyslexia, low vision, visual processing, or any other reason), I would love to know what accessible fonts you personally like best and why.

*This is question for people who rely on accessible fonts only. No replies from others, please. Thank you!
