My wife had a brilliant idea, Joe Biden should step down right now and let Kamala Harris take the next two months and do all the things she was talking about, and she would still get to be the first woman president as well as mess up all the trump merchandise .

Fascinating to see these heavily marked-up historic photos from Magnum on Instagram, showing among other things how much they were tweaked (and how much skill that required) even in the days of analog film and darkrooms.

Today, we celebrate the birthday of the remarkable Marie Skłodowska-Curie – a true inspiration for researchers worldwide. 🎉

As the first woman to win a Nobel Prize and the only individual to receive it twice in two different categories, her contributions to science are unparalleled.

The #MSCActions fellowship bears her name and helps young scientists in their research.

We will keep building a brighter future for generations to come.

For morbid reasons of my own I keep an eye on the Apache OpenOffice project's regular reports to the ASF board:

whimsy.apache.org/board/minute…

As is normal, the September report says that all is great with the project - community health is always "improving". And they are clearly on top of upcoming problems: "Python 2 is unmaintained. We have in the development tree the external python3 support. Internal python 3 support is difficult. We are checking alternatives." They plan to fix it in "the next major release". The project hasn't made a major release in ten years, so I wouldn't hold my breath...

(OK, so I'm still clearly in a snarky mode, sorry.)

I love the implicit "answer this right or we'll drive a robot over a stranger someday" part of the whole prove-you're-a-human captcha experience.

Sincere question, does anyone have any good resources explaining how anarchy and disability interact? Or, for that matter, how anarchy is beneficial to and supportive of a whole bunch of marginalized groups?

I've known some awesome folks who identify as anarchists, and have definitely seen my share of strong mutual aid efforts over the years. But I've seen communities of many types do some pretty awful things to marginalized folks in my lifetime, myself included. And I've seen this behavior in the absence of factors like scarcity, which would be the easy explanation if it were in fact true.

And to be clear, I don't like what our government has been for a long time now. But sometimes I need one of its imperfect tools, like the ADA or building codes, to force others to act. And no I don't like that, but they're tools I have to get me out of bad situations, and I have those because of a government.

I just don't feel right having that at the cost of...this. So sell me on why doing away with government entirely is something I might support?

Links to resources or things to search for are fine, and I did search before asking this but didn't have much luck. Thanks!

I am reading Cavenden Hall by Barbara Taylor Bradford. I read it once, on a plane from London to LA, but I can't remember it too well, so really enjoying the second read. Anyone who loves Downton Abbey should consider it, it reminds me of Downton in so many ways. Actually it was written before Downton was even a twinkle in Julian Fellows's eye, but there are definite similarities. Incidentally, I wonder why on earth no Downton novels? There are books, but they're behind the scenes things or cookery books. I bet the novels would sell like hot cakes if they're decently written.
in reply to Lulu Hartgen

That's a very good question. I don't know why science fiction franchises are able to produce so many novels but, as far as I know, there aren't any official novels for Downton Abbey. I'm sure there's lots of DA fan fiction but I do agree that official novels would likely do well. If I'm going to be honest, Downton Abbey novels would probably sell more copies than many Doctor Who novels and BBC Books has no issues producing DW novels.
It would be amazing if they could have an original cast member reading an audio version of the book or to have a company producing official DA audio dramas. I think it would sell quite well.

@DavidGoldfield I would sure consider buying them. They sure had enough other related merchandise that's for sure and some of it was, well, never mind.
in reply to David Goldfield

@DavidGoldfield I'd like to see an EarthSearch franchise of novels, maybe taking the story further, maybe going down rabbit trails they didn't have the time for during the original series, that sort of thing. Mind Warp didn't do it for me, since its link to EarthSearch was so tenuous.

Fuck. You. This kind of design should be a fireable offense.

I'm curious to hear from fellow blind users about your favorite accessible Windows apps! I just reinstalled Windows and would love some recommendations. What apps do you find essential for daily tasks, productivity, or just for fun? Please share your favorites! #Blind #VisuallyImpaired #Accessibility #WindowsApps #AssistiveTechnology #Windows

Keepass for managing passwords.
Ditto for managing my clipboard.
Executor for launching things.
Calcute for adding things up and otherwise being a better calculator than Windows already has.
MemPad for notetaking.
Microsip for my landline telephone number I've had for decades.
Jarte for when I occasionally need a long form editor with a spellcheck.
MUSHclient for online gaming, not that I have in years now sadly.
RedditForBlind for redditing.
tweesecake for being on Mastodon if I am not already in a browser.
I still use an old Winamp for music.
Veracrypt for accessing my encrypted volumes.

I'm primarily a Firefox, ms office, NVDA and Dropbox user.

in reply to Sean Randall

@cachondo You use firefox? I'd love to use it but it always seems so slow with screen readers if you're playing web games or have lots of tabs open. And thanks for some of these. I hadn't heard of several of them.
in reply to Lanie Carmelo

I don't game online, but I do run media heavy things quite often without any obvious slowdown.
I regularly have news or radio streaming alongside ambiphone or mynoise in a background tab without issue.

Windows Server 2025 takes admins by surprise

theregister.com/2024/11/06/win…

So Windows is a virus....

The fact that the Hellsite is now completely unusable without an account is probably the best indication that your should delete your account.

Incidentally:

1. I've deleted my X/Twitter account; have only been using it to get notifications and news from streamers I follow elsewhere anyway
2. I've created an account on bsky: bsky.app/profile/ebassi.bsky.s… — still unsure as to whether I'm going to use it much

in reply to Emmanuele Bassi

I've been on Twitter for 15 years, but it's been increasingly untenable to stay there; I thought I'd keep the account alive (without basically any content outside of likes and retweets), but even that proposition has become just a chore, and a silent endorsement of Space Karen Clown Car.

Of course, once he gets his spot on the new US admin, he might end up chasing the new high, and leave the site to finally die…

Okay, this comes from someone who used to have crappy #SatelliteInternet where I used to live. It never ceases to amaze me how fast my #Internet is now. A #Windows reinstall that took days before now takes hours on good #FiberOptic Internet. I'm still in the country, but this area happens to have great connectivity. #RuralInternet #TechTalk #InternetSpeed #tech #technology

it kinda blew my mind when I moved home last that I got faster access on my phone when walking around a park in our little village than i used to get from being wired into the modem in our old place.

Microsoft are effectively giving up on Copilot Pro subscription ($20/month) as almost nobody paid for it.

Instead they are bundling it into Microsoft 365 consumer subscriptions and inflating the renewal prices there. There’s no opt out.

Effectively allows the Copilot revenue and user numbers to be inflated.

For those who use the Orbit writer, what features does it come with? Does it vibrate or beep or anything? #Blind
in reply to Nick's world

I don't remember it having any noise. orbit are big on their vibration and it does do that for battery and connection status if I remember. it's been a long time since I used one.
