in reply to Stéphanie

@stephanie I remember a story at Futureshop in Vancouver on Broadway. I wanted some GoPro accessory and they were locked. Ask the sales dude about one, he said "we don't have it" and left. And then I had to wait for another sales person for the alt I was thinking but didn't have time to ask....

And then at the cash sales dude 1 asked to be the "person that helped" (commission) and I said "fuck no".

I really needed the shit urgently and at the time Amazon Canada was still crap.

Upcoming events:

The friday before, we'll probably also appear and talk about about #webxdc at the #Matrix barcamp.

Sunday morning, our friends from @n0iroh namely @flub, will give a talk about the P2P-iroh network architecture fosdem.org/2025/schedule/event…

Otherwise, you'll find us mostly around #OFFDEM for chatting and more ad-hoc sessions.

Happy birthday to Russian #mathematician & writer Sofia Vasilyevna Kovalevski (1850-1891). Her contributions to analysis, differential equations & mechanics include Cauchy-Kovalevski theorem & the famed Kovalevski top. She was 1st woman appointed to full prof in N Europe or to serve as editor of a major sci journal. She is also remembered for her contributions to Russian literature. All of this despite living when women were still barred from attending 🧵

This fucking Free Our Feeds bullshit is basically trying to do for Bluesky what Mozilla does for Google.

And guess what, there’s Mozilla’s executive director and president on as custodians alongside two guys from AI companies and the executive director of Meta partner Social Web Foundation.

I’m so bloody sick and tired of bloody Silicon Valley asshats sucking all the oxygen out of the room with their bullshit and I truly hope the folks roped into legitimising it realise this and distance themselves as quickly as possible (you know who you are).

6 new CVEs in "rsync".

"In the most severe CVE, an attacker only requires anonymous read access to a rsync server, such as a public mirror, to execute arbitrary code on the machine the server is running on."

That would be CVE-2024-12084 (9.8) AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, a heap-based buffer overflow in rsyncd.

Google’s Gemini AI just shattered the rules of visual processing — here’s what that means for you.
"Google’s Gemini AI has quietly upended the AI landscape, achieving a milestone few thought possible: The simultaneous processing of multiple visual streams in real time."
"...Imagine a medical professional showing an AI both live patient symptoms and historical diagnostic scans at the same time... "
- uh, do I want to? Keep AI far away from my medical records (I say that as I'm sure it's too late already.)

Internal Meta memo tells managers how performance-based job cuts will work
(This is a bit sad to me, because accessibility teams especially have to do a lot of comms with so many other parts of a company and so it's one of the least areas to have "underperformers" but this is often not as visible to leadership)
