My case was dismissed!

My statement for the National Writers Union:

On May 2nd, 2024, I was arrested while reporting on the ground at Portland State University. I was documenting the police’s actions as they cleared an encampment and library occupation in support of the liberation of Palestine when, later that evening, I was arrested by the Portland Police Bureau while filming the violent arrests occurring in the park in front of the PSU library.

Following my arrest, I faced consistent harassment from the police until I was finally let out of jail early the next morning. This harassment included racist remarks, sexual harassment, misogyny, a cop taking a selfie with me as I was in handcuffs, and the persistent interruption of all my phone calls.

This experience has highlighted the critical importance of press freedom and the rights of journalists to report on public events without fear of arrest or intimidation. The need for transparency and accountability in our institutions grows increasingly urgent. And under a Trump presidency, protecting our First Amendment rights is more important than ever.

My trial was set to begin on January 27th. I was offered a plea deal multiple times, but I refused to plead guilty to a crime I did not commit. My commitment to uncovering the truth and informing the public remains steadfast, even in the face of these challenges.

You can read the rest of my statement at the link attached.

While the state loves waiting until the last minute to extend the punishment for as long as they can, I genuinely don’t think this would have been possible without support from multiple unions, the press freedom advocacy groups, and all of the solidarity. Thank you 🖤

Here's an AI Cover of the Jason Mraz Living in the Moment song by the Centigram TrueVoice engine - just as to my expectations, feeding lots of text with high inflection did improve the pitch range of this one significantly, so it's usable for a wider range of songs. Try it at:

In fluent English, traditionally, It would be hyphenated when used as a compound adjective before the noun ("open-source software"), and not hyphenated when used as a standalone description ("this software is open source"). However, this distinction has been lost as hyphens generally fell out of favor starting in the 1990s, and later with the rise of international English.

Strictly speaking, however, in high-quality documentation, the distinction should still be made.

Last night, students blocking #Serbia universities called citizens in front of national television #RTS to protest against the media darkness.National television, which we all pay for through our electricity bill, does not inform the public about the protests and attacks on students, nor about the answers to the fall of the canopy in Novi Sad, when 15 people died and two are still in serious condition, with terrible injuries.
We responded to the students' call.

Just Stop Oil protester, 78, has jail term extended after no suitable tag found, according to the Guardian. This is totally disgusting. Regardless of why she was incarcerated in the first place, this is not justice as I would define it. #JustStopOil #Justice

After my #CVSS blog post, what feels like two hundred persons have pointed out that the CVSS field is not mandatory in the CVE records. It is a clarification that does not add much. The reality is that users seem to want the scores so bad that CISA will add CVSS nonetheless, mandatory or not.

Another Formant TTS that didn't turn out bad as far as AI singing is Orpheus. However, its pitch range is very narrow, and breaks at higher pitches. It still didn't do too horribly with this Teenager in Love oldies tune, though. Sharing it for the amusement factor mostly. The voice can be used at jammable.com/orpheus-tts-engli…

We're returning from our holiday and slowly homing in on maybe getting ready to consider looking at possibly doing another #GoToSocial release at some point soon or nearly-soon or whenever we feel like getting around to it.

Likely to be in the next release:

  • Post editing: already on main/snapshot.
  • Blocklist/allowlist subscriptions: already on main/snapshot. Check out the docs here -- docs.gotosocial.org/en/latest/… and here -- docs.gotosocial.org/en/latest/….
  • Push notifications: not on main yet but vyr has been working hard on this on a branch so we'll try to include it.
  • More bugs than ever before, more anti-capitalist homosexuality than you can shake a stick at, more torment collocated at the nexus.

2025 should be good!

The developer behind the well-received Kiwi Browser for Android has revealed that the app is effectively shutting down.
The app has been pulled from the Play Store and will no longer be maintained after January.
Fortunately, the developer revealed that Kiwi’s support for extensions has been ported to Microsoft Edge Canary. See our other accessible web browsers on our apps directory accessibleandroid.com/app-cate…

Jobs almost caught up on friendica.world

The jobs are being processed faster, now doing 120k jobs per day. There are 78k jobs remaining.

There were around 150k jobs for Jan 11th, it's almost through those. After that, there are only 4k jobs per day on average, meaning it will start processing a day every hour. I estimate it will start doing that around 1 or 2 pm CET today, so expect a lot of notifications start coming in after that. It should be all up-to-date around midnight (CET).

Soft Voice is now live on Jammable. I'm not too happy with it as it took the breathier qualities of the voice rather than the stronger portions, so to me it does not sing well. However, use it if you have credits or the time for amusement: jammable.com/soft-voice-tts-pz…
(ETI-Eloquence 3.3 is in training and will probably sound much better)

@peertube @macfranc @filippodb ho fatto il grande passo. Vero, per queste cose avrei anche Wikimedia Commons, ma il gusto di far rodere di invidia i mainstream media ha un fascino tutto suo.

I was bad, and made a Jammable voice for the Amstrad Speech Synthesizer Voice. Barely had enough audio, but it didn't come out too bad. Attached is a cover of it doing Harry Chapin - Cat's In The Cradle.
If you wish to try or use the voice, here's the link:

TalkBack image descriptions on the OnePlus 13 are powered by an on-device generative AI model from Google.

So I guess this confirms the OnePlus 13 indeed supports the multimodal Gemini Nano model.

The model occupies about ~4GB of space so I hope more use cases emerge for it. Once the AI Edge SDK opens up more, I'm hoping some 3P apps start to use it.

Just wondering if anyone has used WritingTools and if it's accessible. I'd like to try it but I can't find the download link for the latest Windows version. I don't need a lot of hand holding but could someone please give me the basic steps to locate the actual download link?

For all you retro text to speech nerds out there, here's a recording of Superior Software's "Speech" for the Amstrad CPC computer (1986). This was a small piece of Z80 machine code that played phonemes through the computer's AY-3-8912 sound chip

It sounds pretty harsh, and there are a number of hard clicks in the output I couldn't easily fix.

I've included what I think is the spoken script as alt text

Torpenhow Hill.

When the Saxons arrived and asked the Welsh the name of that hill, the Welsh said "pen" which means "hill" in Welsh. So the Saxons used their word for hill, "tor," and called it Torpen (hill hill).

The Norse added the their world for hill "Haugr". So now it was Torpen Haugr (Hill Hill Hill).

Later, the English called it Torpenhow Hill (Hill Hill Hill Hill)

Edit: Those saying "English don't call it that". I'm English and I called it that in this very post. Bazinga.
