I was there, Gandalf. I was there forty years ago. I was there when magenta ruled the world.

Dear women, pioneers of computing, early programmers and all of you, who took us into the digital age, thank you. On this International Women’s Day Computer History Museum Slovenia congratulates you for all your contributions. Introduce yourselves to us, so we can get to know you personally, hear your stories and learn of the history as you remember it happening.

I uncovered an extensive trove of lost retro stuff in an old shed today, but this one item is so cool that it deserves a post all to itself: "MUDS: Exploring Virtual Worlds on the Internet" (1995) by Claire Lissette Benedikt and Dave Ciskowski. It was outdated even at the time I bought it - around '99, on heavy discount - but despite that it's no longer the reliable MUD phone book it hoped to be, it's a wonderfully preserved piece of history.

@vga256 - tagging you because how neat is this

UPDATE: I tried to connect to every single entry in the list of 100 MUDs. Almost all are defunct entirely. FurryMUCK and PernMUSH still exist, but their details are entirely wrong. Valhalla and Elender are still found at the server printed in the book, but the port address is wrong. But there is one MUD that, 28 years after the publication of this book, still awaits at the exact address printed: Ancient Anguish (ancient.anguish.org:2222).

After a few tries I was able to fully print from Quark XPress to the ImageWriter II over #AppleTalk with the #AirTalk from the #PocketChip! It wasn’t quick but it worked!

After making some really sketchy repository changes and doing an incantation, I got some X11 sources installed and Mini VMac actually compiled without issue!

And look! It’s speaking AppleTalk (UDP) on my network!! Hahaha this is so weird to me. Should I print something to my AppleTalk ImageWriter II from my handheld? 😅

How about browsing the ✨ Internet ✨ on the emulated Mac? 😅

Using MacIPGW here for MacIP. Writing up a blog post about all of this later today!

Everyone’s on their Hand386 so I dusted off my PocketChip and look at that, I’m running System 7.5.3 thanks to Mini VMac! It’s delightfully quick!

TIL that "spool" as used in "print spooler" is an acronym that stands for "Simultaneous Peripheral Operations On Line". Image is an excerpt from Inside AppleTalk, Second Edition, page 14-3.

Although there may be some disagreement: is it a backronym? (Missing verification.) See the Wikipedia page for more. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spooling

*Edited to include backronym reference from Wikipedia page.

What have I been up to lately? Just getting #WordPerfect for #DOS to run in DOSBox. It even prints, sort of, by way of PostScript files.

I can’t wait to play around with this even more. I actually used WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS as a kid, and I have fond memories of it.

New post! I documented my weekend efforts to run #Rust on classic Mac OS in case it's useful to others or if anyone has ideas of additional things to try.

you can see you can see the early "DAS BOOT" disk loading TOS boot screen, printed really big pasted up on the whiteboard for some reason

someone pointed out there is an Apple Lisa with Atari asset tags owned by a collector in Germany?

and may still have the TOS development system on its hard drive

could be the same one on the far right in the photo!

as it is the 40th anniversary of the Apple Lisa i am once again obsessing about this photo of Atari developers Dave Staugas, Jim Eisenstein and Jerome Domurat sitting in front of a few Apple Lisas and Macintoshes in March of 1985

the Apple Lisa was used to prototype the Atari ST's TOS operating system before the hardware was ready

the photo is from this Antic Podcast interview with Jerome:

speaking of Apple Lisa source...

source code for the GEMDOS prototype for the Apple Lisa was found among the Digital Research source code that was released under the GPL by Caldera a while back

now that's how you publicly license historical source code

and people have gotten it to run!

with a full GEM desktop!

it even runs well behaving Atari ST apps!

This is the best photo of magnetic core memory I've ever taken. IBM, early 60s. Shot with a microscope lens mounted on a 35mm B&W digital camera. No post! (I got into the habit of never doing any post-processing while documenting historic artifacts for the museum. Photoshop not allowed!) #retrocomputing #photography #rcsri

I used this shot for the cover of my book of images from our museum:

This website provides the full back archive of BYTE magazine, all 23 years of it from 1975 to to 1998. It's a treasure trove of vintage tech and nostalgia, not even Archive.org carries all the issues.

The site actually focuses on old Apple magazines, but has also PC magazines and other resources on the history of microcomputing.

:fediverse: Now that there are so many people here, maybe there's a chance:

🖥️ In the 1990s, I used a #MicroVAX II with a #DEC #VT320 #terminal like the one shown here, but with an original black plastic case for both the monitor (white monochrome) and keyboard as sold new by the vendor (Evans & Sutherland).

🔎 Has anyone ever come across one of these with the black case? Surely some of these rare models were saved from the landfill.

3 years ago I volunteered to create a new edition of Ethan Winer’s 1990s BASIC programming book using LibreOffice (@libreoffice). Over the span of a year, with Ethan’s editorial input, I rebuilt the book layout from TXT sources in #LibreOffice , and recreated all diagrams from scratch using #FreeDOS, #InkScape and #GIMP. It turned out great!

There is a raffle to win a # machine: http://vcf.emwhite.org/winpb/ . If you don't know about the Foenix computers, they are a new line of computers inspired by # computers, chock full of retro sound chips (real and FPGA), based on real 65816 and 68K CPUs, designed and produced by Stefany Allaire. Unlike some other # computer projects, this one isn't vaporware. I actually have an early model, so I can promise you they are real :). https://c256foenix.com/
