Is there a specific reason you're interested in getting EDK2 *with display support* running on the Pocket Reform? Putting resources into that seems problematic to me, because a visual UI in the boot environment will probably not be accessible to blind users, unless one also adds audio drivers and a screen reader. I think it's better for the boot loader to boot into a real OS with a full UI stack as simply and reliably as possible, with no UI in the boot loader itself.
@matt there's already a bootloader that is currently invisible to everyone (u-boot). having a graphical menu at least helps a lot of people to select a different boot source / conjure an emergency shell etc, which is currently only possible over serial

Linux. What a beast. I don't get why for some on a virtual machine, Debian speech goes away in the installer. Never had this happen on my real, physical machine. What could a VM have or do that the real machine doesn't? Ugh. I've now backed up the external SSD I'm booting it off of, that way I won't have to reinstall again, but yes, pressing S once at boot (you'll know cause your fans will rev down after hitting S) you should hear Speakup, go through your soundcards, press enter when you hear the right one, or (more reliably) type the number of it and then enter. Sometimes enter alone wouldn't work for me. It's sadly one of the few distros that got this right, and they do configure both Espeakup and Orca for you on your user session, so nice. Debian's downfall really is the ancient packages, and it'll always be that. Archlinux is great but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone but the most advanced who's OK with rolling releases and config changes. Debian's packages are newer-ish today, but they'll go out of style way before the LTS timeline is up.
@matt they stopped including the speakup kernel module, I was so mad. I'm not sure how easy is it to get Orca going at the installer, in theory since they use a graphical one it shouldn't be difficult. Last time I messed with anything Fidora was back in 2016 and it was mostly over SSH and the terminal. Today, I'd also want to nuke Gnome for Mate (unless Gnome has progressed to the point of fixing the unlabeled unfocusable windowing issues.) starting with Fedora 43 they use Wayland now too, with the Fidora everything ISO it may be possible to set that up right durinng install though.
oh, just the activities thing, this was also back around in 2016 or 2017. So it may have progressed a lot since then. You would press the super key (Windows) and it would just say, "window." Then you'd do it again, it would focus it, but as you tabbed and arrowed around it would fall back to not reading. I should honestly give Gnome3 an honest try again sometime, Mate has just been such a default cause it's the most comfortable and familiar. If there's still a way to get the Gnome3 to use X11 and Wayland as its backend (I'd suspect so) it should be doable to.
wow really! I wonder if that means I can switch my Pi's backend to Wayland? I was too afraid to try it. Trixi now ships with 48 though. Ha. This is where Debian really misses out. When I started with V12 it was still on Orca 45 and so over time Debian really misses out on the newer accessibility improvements and patches. In a way, as much as they try to keep up a standard of access they end up losing it the quickest if something's broken and you won't get it fixed until the next LTS release is out, or if you're lucky for it to be uploaded into the backports repo. Ugh. LOL
@matt OK. I just tried it again. Gnome3 that is. All I got was, "main stage window" for the super key whenperssing it, and "overview pannel" but nothing else. I just did an install of the gnome-desktop so all the full bits with extra packages, think around a gig. Then I made sure GDM3 still held orca at start, and I do like GDM3 better than LightDM, but still. Once I logged in, it broke. I could even log in to mate and it owuld be fine, from GDM3 that is. So odd.
@matt yeah, really not sure what broke there. Something really did though. The run dialog would read only the text inside it, like "type a program" and if you got it wrong, "not found" and that's all. it felt so like, half-baked, as though the GTK-accessibility bus itself was working, I could even type firefox in to that run dialog too! And read it! But any press of the super key to see menus would just say that "main stage window" and that's all, then a down arrow, "overview pannel" and that's it. In the end I did go back to Mate but man some day I do hope to use Gnome3, cause Mate is gonna go stale eventually.
Like the Orca situation on Debian today. Trixie (Debian 13) currently has Orca 48.1 in stable, while 49.1 just landed in testing (“forky”). You could try to pin only Orca from it so you don't break your system, with `echo "deb deb.debian.org/debian forky main contrib non-free-firmware" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/forky.list` and pin only that package: ```sudo tee /etc/apt/preferences.d/orca-from-forky.pref >/dev/null <<'EOF' Package: * Pin: release n=forky Pin-Priority: 100
Package: orca Pin: release n=forky Pin-Priority: 990 EOF``` So if you want Orca 49 and that fails? Build from source, of course! What else! Get your Klang-tools or whatever it needs to build, bloat up your system with dev packages you might not need, then you'll have Orca 49.
and Orca friends. If you know the answer, I'd be shocked. But how can I make Orca behave more like NVDA in terms of interrupting the reading when a newly focused item comes into view? It's the one thing, the one thing keeping me on Windows right now. Orca, if you open Firefox, doesn't interrupt reading the "desktop list" if Firefox opened before it read it. Same with say, if a shell script launches a terminal, you'll have to hear the window frame of your desktop before you hear that fact, that a terminal opened. Orca 48 sucks at this (as well as not exposing the "screen layout" setting anywhere! I cannot find it!) and it's what holds me back from Linux for sure.
I like Arch, but a recent bug makes it kind of unusable. Not sure why, but espeakup crashes after a while, and you have to restart the service each time to get speech.
@Lprazdnik yeah, that's the thing. Fidora may not be bad, but Yum, well, it's yum. YUM has been criticized for being slower than APT, especially in terms of metadata processing and dependency resolution. Guess what? It performs a repository update with every. single. command. Ugh. I don't like Yum. I never liked yum, and I have never, ever said yum to yum.
@mntmn Prompted by the release of the Raspberry Pi 500+, I wonder if you've ever considered doing a Reform variant in that retro desktop form factor, i.e. the computer inside a keyboard with no pointing device or display. If it were battery-powered and had a built-in speaker like the Reform laptops, that would even be a complete usable and portable computer for blind people.
@wronglang I do wonder how much the display contributes to battery usage, as opposed to the SoC, WiFi radio, and DRAM. Is there any hope of getting sighted folks to go screenless for some computing tasks if we made it easy enough?
oh I don't know about changing behavior but modern screens can be really power hungry, usually you get a fair bit of extra laptop time just by lowering screen brightness. You'd get more from just skipping the whole thing and not running any rendering compute.
It's not more than a CPU using all cores full blast but most of the time the CPU isn't doing much and does a good job of scaling back power usage.
i've considered this many times, but i don't quite get what the upside is of marrying the keyboard to the computer instead of having them two interchangeable parts (vs the downside of being more inflexible). i'd like to understand though.
You have a good point. For my main computer at my desk, I do prefer the keyboard to be a separate, replaceable component. So I guess I'm really only interested in a different product category than the Raspberry Pi 400/500: a smaller stand-alone portable computer with a keyboard but no pointing device or display. And I guess that's practically only attractive to blind people, so I understand if you don't consider it worth your time and resources.
Sorry, I meant battery-powered, and a stand-alone device as opposed to a Pi with a keyboard connected. So, basically, a laptop without the pointing device or screen.

@mikedoise @ysotomayor I disagree. I have it, and if you know what you're looking for in a phone, and the air fits that bill, then buy it. I wanted something I could use one handed, and that would fit in almost any pocket. I don't care about cameras, or phone speakers in the slightest. If I can hear VoiceOver through it, that's fine.
@ysotomayor That's actually very good to hear. I am a heavy use kind of phone user, and would love the Air I thought about getting one for a good amount of time, but I felt like I'd get more out of the Pro Max again. I also wish it had Lidar as well.

Yeah, but from what I’ve heard, the iPhone 17 Pro scratches like mad if you even touch it so IDK. Which would you rather have? An iPhone where it’s super small and has little battery life or one that just by touching it decreases its trade-in value?
@rooktallon scratch gate is so overblown. I had the pro, I put it in pockets with coins, keys, cards, it was fine Most people keep their phones for so long that tradein value doesn't matter anyway.
