I don't know if this effort will pan out, and we're going to get a long running series with a rotating cast going farther into the future, like the showrunners seem to indicate. At this point, just like with Discovery, I value a lot more a valiant effort even if that may ultimately fall short, than a safe bet on whatever grimdark slop they'll give us next if things don't change.
I watched the first two episodes of Starfleet Academy, after consciously trying to stay out of the Star Trek fandom's catastrophising about it, as well as avoiding the obvious attempts at pre-emptively shit on it by the chuds, and I have some thoughts about the series.
In the Starfleet Technical Manual, there is a throwaway detail of the LCARS user interface that when it is upgraded, users can still utilize the previous several versions. This is because their work is mission-critical and it is unacceptable to compromise the mission by forcing unfamiliar changes; eventual retraining is part of their job, but the flexibility allows them to take the retraining at their own pace.
I think about this from time-to-time and how this is still a sci-fi idea that is seen all too rarely in how we do actual computer UIs.
My brother-in-law is Peter David, writer of stuff. (Seriously, that's what it says on his business card.) He's written #comics (he's best known for his 12-year run on The Incredible Hulk), movie and TV novelizations (some of his #StarTrek novels are very popular in Trek fandom), television episodes (such as #Babylon5) and movies, original novels...all kinds of, well, stuff.
I bring this up because he's been dealing with severe health issues for three years and counting and is starting to make progress in recovery just in time for Medicaid to yank his coverage. As you may know, in America, medical expenses without some kind of insurance coverage are prohibitive.
A friend has set up a GoFundMe to help pay for these medical expenses. If you can spare a few bucks, please donate. Thank you.

🚨 R.I.P Discovery's Kenneth Mitchell!
Sadly, Kenneth’s family have released the news that the actor has passed away at the age of just 49. He had been battling ALS for the past few years. Kenneth portrayed the Klingons Kol, Kol-Sha, and Tenavik, as well as Aurellio, in #StarTrekDiscovery!

TIL that in 1990, the BBC censored a Star Trek: The Next Generation episode because Data talks about the “reunification of Ireland in 2024”, discussing how terrorism is successful form of political influence.
We are 7 days away from 2024 & that episode has never aired in full in Ireland.

Hey folks, have you taken my #StarTrek survey yet? I'm planning to close it to responses in January, so there's only a few weeks left to take it and share it.
You don't need to be a huge fan to take the survey! And you can skip any question you don't like. Trying to spread this to as many diverse corners of the internet as possible. So please share it today! Many thanks. docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAI…

I interviewed Michelle Yeoh a few years ago about #StarTrekDiscovery and I mentioned offhand that I'd written an article about what seeing her use her accent on the bridge of a starship meant to me.
She stopped and said "Wait, that was YOU?"
And then proceeded to talk about how much that article had meant to HER and how it contributed to the success of the show.
I can't think about it without crying.
