Hey hey #AUDIOBOOKS folks, do you have a favorite free iOS app? Or one where you pay once and then you own it?

I'm looking for an app that will read my files, and do bookmarks. There is BookPlayer, which is lovely and I am paying for that currently, but I'm just curious if a free option exists?

(I'm happy paying the BookPlayer fellow I'm just wondering about other options for folks I'm trying to get off Audible, so you don't need to remind me to support people)

I'm still hoping for a decent Hungarian AI-based TTS whenever a book comes up that I want to read. It's frustrating that even with all the tech advances, the best speech engines are basically the same as in 2006. Professional narrators reading non-fiction, making text and audio alignment less tedious and less resource-intense training could really help with this. I'm not expecting character voices or emotions, just something enjoyable. #Hungarian #AI #Audiobooks #TechFrustration

Here's a good piece that lays out some advantages to #AI narrated #audiobooks. The trouble is that there is no analysis of what happens when an author or publisher decides to forego hiring a human and go directly to this method.

Why AI audiobook narrators could win over some authors and readers, despite the vocal bumps

I really enjoy listening to audiobooks and appreciate the emotion and nuance that skilled narrators bring to the story. So I have my (considerable) doubts that AI-voiced audiobooks will be just as good. Hope this doesn’t become the norm. #Bookstodon #BookToot #AudioBooks #AI

Episode 205 of the Mosen at Large #Podcast is now available wherever you get podcasts. My most bizarre #Windows experience ever, the real-world impact of #iOS bugs, how to maintain maximum #iPhone battery health for years, and #audiobooks on the BlindShell Classic 2. Plus, if a hotel has discriminated against you because of a guide dog but apologise, would you go back? mosen.org/episode-205-my-most-…

VLC on Android isn't a good choice for playing audiobooks. It loses a few seconds when trying to change playback speed. Also, it doesn't understand a folder of audio files as one book.

I switched to AudioAnchor from F-Droid. It doesn't suffer from the above two issues. However, it expects a folder for each book, even if it's a single file.

I have a Syncthing folder for Audiobooks now, holding only the current ones.
