If I were a digital rights activist, I would see this time as a golden opportunity.
#Grok, the #AI "assistant" powered by Musk's xAI, has become an engine of non-consensual image and video generation at a mass scale - including pornographic and pedopornographic content. Creating and distributing this imagery has never been quicker or easier. All one has to do is reply to an image posted by someone on X with a mention of Grok and a prompt. This feature was restrained recently but people who pay an $8 subscription to X can still do it. How many politicians pushing for #ChatControl are still using X? How many official government accounts? You know, the same people who screamed WE NEED TO PROTECT THE CHILDREN and pushed for the scanning of all digital communications and files (including E2EE encrypted ones) of European citizens? In the Privacy Guides article by Em, the French, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian and Irish governments (amongst many others) were in full support of Chat Control. As far as I can tell, prominent politicians, Prime Ministers and official government accounts from these countries are still posting on X.
Is there anything we can do to point out the hypocrisy? Or have the abuse machine that is Grok sanctioned and fined? And - this is key - use this horrible incident to push politicians to FINALLY quit X? It's about time.

UK's "age assurance" is similar to #chatcontrol 's "age verification" plans: the end of privacy when using online services. Basically policing everywhere demanding "show me your passport!" before you can cross the street to a web shop or forum.

Privacy is ... the problem and surveillance = freedom, according to danish politician Hækkerup and Hummelgaard pushing for mass surveillance of EU citizens through #ChatControl.
Our current minister of justice, Hummelgaard, has aparrently forgotten our constitution, which from 1849 has defined the right to #privacy and secrecy, in written communication.
Oh, but think of the.. (insert whatever excuse fits the current zeitgeist, to further your political agenda; be it foreign enemies, children, enemies from within, illigal emmigrants, etc. It has happened before.)
Makes me sick. And embarased that danes elect people who either didn't read 1984, or didn't understand it.

Jak tak čtu titulky ohledně #ChatControl, nestačím se divit. To ten návrh žádný z kolegů novinářů nečetl? Největší problém, povinné skenování konverzací, které ohrožovalo koncové šifrování, z něj vypadl 🥳 A dobrovolné skenování na dětské porno funguje už řadu let, jen v poslední době na výjimku, kterou návrh Rady EU legalizuje (proto taky původně vznikl, že ano). Ta výjimka totiž na jaře vyprší. Ano, jsou tam háčky (více o nich zde: lupa.cz/aktuality/rada-eu-ma-s…), které se snad podaří zatrhnout v trialogu. Hlavním problémem IMO je, že návrh přímo říká, že Evropská komise bude o povinné skenování usilovat v budoucích návrzích legislativy, takže je třeba pořád být na pozoru. Ale kvůli návrhu fakt nebude "Facebook a spol. šmírovat lidi ve velkém", jak píší Seznam Zprávy (to už mimochodem dávno dělá i bez #ChatControl).
Rada EU má shodu na ochraně dětí online, povinné skenování soukromých chatů z návrhu vypadlo
Rada Evropské unie po dlouhém vyjednávání schválila svůj návrh nařízení, které má ochránit děti před online riziky. Vypadla z něj původně prosazovaná…David Slížek (Internet Info, s.r.o.)
So if I understand correctly, under the current proposal, if I wish to continue to use say Signal or WhatsApp to have video chats with my life partner I will need to verify my age and expect to have any communications scanned by the service providers.
But making a phone call to the same person from a dumb phone will not?
Or does the EU proposal want to extend age verification and the voluntary scanning of communications to more traditional telephony systems as well?
Chat Control is back, but slightly changed:

❌ No forced scanning

The update just quietly passed in the EU Council & now needs to be discussed with the EU Parliament.

EU member states backed a revised proposal to combat online child sexual abuse, despite opposition from Czechia, Poland, Slovakia, and the Netherlands.
The plan allows companies to voluntarily scan encrypted messages as part of risk-mitigation duties, replacing earlier mandatory detection orders. Germany’s shift secured a qualified majority.
The Council will now negotiate final wording with the European Parliament, which previously rejected the scanning.

Why do I get the feeling that lately, in so many countries, new regulations are popping up with only one purpose - to erode privacy 🔓? It feels like a bad joke. I can't keep up anymore.
I wish I could fight them all at once, put pressure everywhere 🌍, no matter where I live. But I don't have the time. I'm already drowning in an endless to-do list.
Why couldn't the government set a different deadline? Why are they so determined to push this through? My mind can't wrap around it 
I just hope they come to their senses and never implement it 🙏

yes, we are engaging in various cryptographic hardenings currently, and will post about it around release times. But #chatcontrol raises quite different massive challenges, especially in combination with the #appcontrol that Google and Apple are normalizing, which in turn Russia, the EU, China and the US are happy to enforce and to tap into.

What if a state tries to mandate us as #deltachat app devs/distributors to shut down a chat profile?
Nothing. It can't be done.
We have no list of chat identities, have no handle or data about them, and don't mediate the message transfer.
However, EU #Chatcontrol politicians and Russian authorities would want us to insert backdoors into our FOSS code. But that is nothing than can happen overnight, and we are fine with friendly forks already. Resilient private internet communication ftw :)
