Alright, my open sourcerors and glitch witches: I need your help :boost_rainbow:

@tidelift – my employer whose rallying cry is Pay The Maintainers! – has launched its second ever Open Source Maintainer Survey.

If you're a maintainer, can you boost and take a few minutes to complete the ~15min survey?

If you're maintainer-adjacent, boosts appreciated!

Federico Mena Quintero reshared this.

Fellow academics:

Strongly consider changing your syllabi now, and designing assignments that can't be fulfilled by #AI chatbots. Even better, consider only assigning work that students will actually be excited to do themselves (for instance, autobiographical essays).

I just got OpenAI to write a better essay on #minstrelsy & US #popmusic than most of my UG students could muster, in about 1 second.

Last RT: Remember that accessibility overlays are trackers. I raised concerns about them tracking non-HIPPA health data (adrianroselli.com/2022/08/ftc-…).

At least one compounding gap can be closed — making them maybe illegal on some health sites.

Any #Android #developers out there who can help with missing descriptions/licenses – i.e. what the mentioned libraries are for? There are still a few gaps to be filled, and each single hint is helpful. Thanks ahead!

Game controler battery status script added. This works with PS4 controlers by default, and probably other batteries if you set the path in the script itself.

I just found this method on Reddit for piggybacking off Google get an RSS feed even if the web site doesn't provide one. Using Google is not ideal, but it's nice to have a workaround.

It's this format, just swap out the URL at the end:

I asked ChatGPT to create a SwiftUI app that plays the game of life. It gave me some SwiftUI views but left the simulation function empty with a "todo". So I just asked it to implement that function - and it did. That generated another helper function with a "todo" body. So I asked it to fill that in as well.

I pasted all of this into Playgrounds and fixed some minor bugs and it worked.

Probably this could have been done with Copilot, too, but this felt pretty magical.

I had to fix a bug with the layout - it tried to use the Grid view, but it confused it with ForEach. Maybe I could have had it correct it with a bit of conversation? It also didn't initially have any data in the gameBoard array - so I just added that myself.

I know a lot of people are playing with Copilot and have had similarly amazing results, but this just kind of blows me away. I could see conversing to a complete functional app in the not-to-distant future. Like on the Holodeck.

I would appreciate help with code review on the macOS backend for AccessKit (github.com/AccessKit/accesskit). My primary reviewer doesn't have a Mac, or any experience developing for macOS as far as I'm aware. I'd especially appreciate help from anyone who has previous experience with the Cocoa accessibility API. Knowledge of Rust is a plus, but I don't think it's necessary. The tricky bits around Rust/ObjC interop have already been reviewed by an expert. Thanks!
in reply to Matt Campbell

@Marco Yeah, it's definitely a tricky one. The number of implementations where Microsoft seriously screwed up the text pattern (and the number of production iterations it took them to get it right even where it does work) make me sympathise with Apple's choice there. But that should all get handled in your library, so it won't be a problem for AcessKit consumers.
in reply to Jamie Teh

@Marco I'm still surprised by just how hard it is to get text right. As part of CTW, I rewrote Gecko's entire text implementation from scratch. It's much nicer now and should put us in good stead for eventually implementing UIA, but I feel I was only able to do that well due to the years I've spent understanding all the wild obscurities and edge cases that text has to offer.
