Reminder that it doesn't matter which Mastodon server you join, as long as you:

Don't join one that's too big;

Don't join one that's too small;

Don't join one using server software your client doesn't support;

Don't join any of the hundreds of servers that are widely blocked by admins;

Don't want to move servers more than once in some cooldown period; and

Don't care about leaving your posts behind when you move.

Other than that, it's a completely inconsequential choice and totally like choosing an email provider.

Wow this sucks so bad.

a person posted on /r/datahoarder that they have created an archive of the Epstein files with added metadata like mentioned people and etc. But everything is LLM-generated.... Including the "full text" of the documents.

Rather than OCRing them, they were fed to chatGPT with a system prompt that told it that it was an expert at OCR.

Happy birthday to The Crossroads Inn, my little instance here has been going for two years now.
The name was based on a suite of melodies I came up with 12+ years ago, and at one point there were 10+ parts, but parts A and B are the core of it all. The name also works for a cosy place where all my interests come together and get shared, of course. 🍻🍾
This was played on my Gypsy Jazz grande bouche bouzouki-guitar (it's a complex beastie!), and yes, that also includes the percussion part. #Music

@Tutanota Just a FYI, the new super low contrast appearance of the website view for email (and presumably the rest, but I only use it for email) is an accessibility issue and just plain harder to read. I have really good vision and it still is unpleasant for me. Reducing contrast to almost nonexistent levels may look better to some people, but overall just is much worse of a view. Sometimes simplest is best and email doesn't have to look fancy.

At least give us something closer to the classic color scheme to choose. Though ideally the more color options the better. (Or even add a custom theme option?)

this is why there is no such thing as "vibe engineering" and it is farcical to imagine a world where it even could exist. even with all the responsible code review and QA and cross-checking (which is like, literally impossible, given the amount of vigilance fatigue that AI systems provoke, and the metrics we have so far all bear that out), the long-term maintenance cost of a workslop infrastructure is going to be *devastating*

the biggest problem we *already have* in open source right now, which we have oversimplified into the term "supply chain security", is the lack of understanding that putting a dependency in your project's dependency set (package.json, pyproject.toml, requirements.txt, cargo.toml, etc) is not just "downloading some code", it is *establishing an ongoing trust relationship with a set of human beings*. this fact is *way* too obscured in all the tools we use.

"Apple removed an app for preserving TikToks, Instagram reels, news reports, and videos documenting abuses by ICE, 404 Media has learned. The app, called Eyes Up, differs from other banned apps such as ICEBlock which were designed to report sightings of ICE officials in real-time to warn local communities. Eyes Up, meanwhile, was more of an aggregation service pooling together information to preserve evidence in case the material is needed in the future in court.

The news shows that Apple and Google’s crackdown on ICE-spotting apps, which started after pressure from the Department of Justice against Apple, is broader in scope than apps that report sightings of ICE officials. It has also impacted at least one app that was more about creating a historical record of ICE’s activity during its mass deportation effort."

btw it’s not just the lead hyprland dev who’s toxic, it’s the whole community. Go check out the official project discord and you’ll see it’s full of pepe frogs and the vibe of 4chan boys posting the most repugnant shit you’d expect them to, all the way back to the very beginning. That discord is functionally a radicalisation funnel. If you’ve been around the internet long enough you know exactly the vibe as soon as you see it.

Here's the draft of an abstract for a colloquium talk I'm giving at Indiana next month. Suggestions for what I should *call* this talk? I was thinking "It's all just interpreters!" or "Interpreters everywhere!", and then @ganshen suggested "Interpreters: the ultimate abstraction" -- am I audacious enough to call it that?

(Feedback welcome on other aspects of it, too!)

When I was a new PhD student here at IU in fall 2008, the first thing I did was take Dan Friedman's programming languages course, where we studied what programming languages are made of by writing lots of interpreters. Since then, I've been studying concurrent and distributed systems, and after about fifteen years of journeying through the ripe fields of distributed computing, I had a realization that would come as no surprise to Dan and his many associates: what I've been doing all this time is still all about interpreters! In this talk I'll describe two lines of work from my research group that exemplify this unsurprising realization. Library-level choreographic programming lets programmers write distributed programs as single, unified programs in their favorite language, and then dynamically project them to multiple endpoints. Causal separation diagrams are inductively defined data structures designed for elegant mechanized reasoning about happens-before relationships in concurrent executions. But really, these two lines of work can be respectively summed up as "What if endpoint projection was an interpreter?" and "What if you could write interpreters for sequence diagrams?" I'll discuss how we answered those questions, and conclude with a few takeaways and ideas for future work.
